He’s baaaaack…

By Zach Arnold | April 29, 2006

By Zach Arnold

Earlier in the week at Puroresu Power, we talked about Antonio Inoki’s attempt to get into the IFL or be associated with the new MMA project. Sherdog reports that Inoki is now the IFL’s “Global Ambassador.” IFL 4/29 Atlantic City results.

Maybe this Jitsuwa Knuckles article would be informative for those associated with the IFL to read.

Have people forgotten that it was Inoki’s 2003 Bom-Ba-Ye show that is the centerpiece of the whole yakuza scandal currently in Japan?

Brutal boxing KO on ESPN2

By Zach Arnold | April 28, 2006

By Zach Arnold

Tonight’s fight between heavyweights Samuel “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter and 7-foot tall Julius Long was an old-fashioned squash match. Peter destroyed Long, who at no point showed any game plan whatsoever in terms of using his height and reach advantage. Peter toyed with him and knocked Long down twice, with the second knockdown being a brutal right punch while Long was stretched over the flexible boxing ring ropes. Peter’s promoter, Dino Duva, had to be pleased with Peter’s performance at the Mohegan Sun tonight.

Boxing versus UFC

By Zach Arnold | April 28, 2006

By Zach Arnold

Keith Terceira has a great article on FoxSports.com titled Boxing losing the battle of evolution to UFC. A must-read article, and I want to hear your feedback about it in the comments section of this post. Money quote from Keith’s article:

Writers have been pointing out boxing’s deficiencies for years only to be blown off by promoters as sensationalism. The difference now is that an alternative is available that excites people and absconds with our fan base. Now the UFC is successfully recruiting our most intelligent executives.

Antonio Inoki’s mystery plan

By Zach Arnold | April 27, 2006

By Zach Arnold

On Thursday night, former Livedoor boss Takafumi Horie was released on bail in Tokyo. Reporters flocked to get a comment from him.

One magazine, Jitsuwa Knuckles, reports that Horie (before the Livedoor scandal) was considering taking part in a fight project with Antonio Inoki. As the fortunes for both Inoki & Horie gone downhill, Jitsuwa Knuckles reports on what the two men had planned on doing in the fight business together.

This week’s show is our IFL preview show, as we focus on the brand new company in a special interview with Cage Rage announcer “The Fight Professor” Stephen Quadros. We ask all of the tough questions, including what the IFL’s financial model is going to be, will MMA fans accept the taped shows (as oppose to live events), and what are the differences or similarities going to be with UFC.

The 16th edition of Fight Opinion Radio is now online and available to download. Here are your options for listening to the show:

By Zach Arnold

On Monday, we posted a brief summary of the latest Shukan Gendai article about DSE, Fuji TV, and Nippon TV in relation to allegations of ties to the yakuza.

Today, we present to you a summary translation of the latest Shukan Gendai article (which focuses heavily on Fuji TV producer Kunio Kiyohara, who is in Las Vegas this week for the K-1 show at the Mirage Hotel).

New job openings at DSE’s office

By Zach Arnold | April 25, 2006

By Zach Arnold

On their official HP, DSE is looking for inquiries to fill some main job positions in the company. These positions include:

  1. Local and overseas business activity (working with VP Sotaro Shinoda)
  2. Merchandising
  3. Legal and credit department activity
  4. Office work (such as clerical)

There are two ways to look at these new openings. Either the company is expanding, or staff is starting to leave the company and they need to find replacements shortly.

By Zach Arnold

Stephen Martinez at Sherdog has a column about the current marketplace for MMA in Japan, and more specifically the war between PRIDE & K-1. Martinez is 100% accurate in his comparisons about the promotional marketing machines of K-1 and DSE, and he also goes on to give a Top 10 list of solutions to improve the situation.

Sakakibara & Kiyohara targeted by Gendai

By Zach Arnold | April 23, 2006

By Zach Arnold

Today, Gryphon said that Shukan Gendai’s article about DSE, Fuji TV, and Nippon TV being tied to the yakuza was a declaration of all-out war.

After reading the latest article series in Monday’s magazine, I would agree with him. The heat is sure turning up on Sherdog. More at Burning Spirit (Japanese).

The cover of this week’s Shukan Gendai magazine has blue text on white background, with the yakuza story remaining on the right side of the front cover. The heading and sub-heading talk about PRIDE (Sakakibara) and what Fuji TV’s alleged ties to the yakuza are.
