By Zach Arnold

A couple of interesting links. First, this link on Gary Goodridge’s forum about Bob Sapp allegedly showing up with a DSE lawyer. The post claims that DSE sent a lawyer with Sapp to the Holland show.

The second link is a translation of a statement that K-1 Holland promoter Simon Rutz made about the situation that happened over the weekend.

K-1 vs. PRIDE vs. Fuji TV vs. Sapp

By Zach Arnold | May 15, 2006

By Zach Arnold

On Saturday night in Holland, Bob Sapp bolted before his scheduled main event with Ernesto Hoost, causing a major firestorm in front of 17,500 fans at the Amsterdam Arena. Sankei Sports, the newspaper affiliated with Fuji TV (which broadcasted the K-1 event), declared that “Sapp ran away” from the fight and issued a boycott against Hoost. The newspaper quoted matchmaker Sadaharu Tanigawa as saying that Sapp “requested unreasonable demands” right before his fight, and that a possible “banishment” or lawsuit could evolve from his actions. Yomiuri Sports had a reporter quoting the ring announcer at the K-1 show talking about Sapp being cowardly and how he left 30 minutes before the main event.

Kameda Brothers become next media target

By Zach Arnold | May 15, 2006

By Zach Arnold

It apparently isn’t only PRIDE that is getting the yakuza scandal treatment. This week’s edition of Shukan Post is promoting a “scoop” story about the alleged ties between the yakuza and the (star) boxing Kameda Brothers.

The yakuza spotlight continues to shine in relation to the fight & entertainment worlds. Last week, 10 members of Goto-gumi were arrested by Tokyo Metropolitan Police.

K-1 World GP in Amsterdam

By Zach Arnold | May 13, 2006

By Zach Arnold

Today’s show in Holland at the Amsterdam Arena proved to be quite a long show. How long? Try 16 matches. No results on the English K-1 page, but they had them on the Japanese page. Results (well, most of them anyways, K-1’s Japanese page didn’t report on all the fights) from today’s show…

I am also getting involved in Super Fighters; it’s a new thing that is launching in Australia. It’s basically like Ultimate Fighting but it’s three, four-minute rounds and you may have three fights in a day.

Fight Opinion Radio: Episode 18 (Writer’s Roundtable)

By Zach Arnold | May 12, 2006

This week’s one-hour show is presented by MMACalifornia.net, a brand new web site focused on the fight scene in the Golden State.

Rob Sayers has a special segment this week with amateur fighter Tim Moore. Ever wonder what it’s like to be an amateur fighter? How do you get into the fight game? What kind of training and traveling is necessary to build your career? Find out all of the answers.

Rob hosts this week’s writer’s roundtable features Tomer Chen and Zach Arnold talking about:

  1. The IFL going public. A move with a purpose or a useless move?
  2. The UFC shows interesting in shifting some programming to HBO. Positive or negative?
  3. Is Royce Gracie really a draw in the year 2006? How will newer MMA fans (created from The Ultimate Fighter show) react to Royce?
  4. The Kameda Brothers draw big TV ratings in Japan. Can boxing knock off MMA from New Year’s Eve TV programming?

To close out the show, Erin Bucknell has a quick show review of last week’s WEC show that she attended. Is Mike Kyle the next Gilbert Yvel? Find out our thoughts on this week’s show.

Randleman out – Overeem vs Belfort at Strikeforce

By Mark Pickering | May 10, 2006

By Mark Pickering

Alistair “Demolition Man” Overeem has emerged as the replacement for the afflicted Kevin “The Monster” Randleman to face former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort in the headline bout of Strikeforce’s second show at San Jose, California’s HP Pavilion on Friday, June 9th.

Since Randleman was sidelined by a shoulder injury Silicon Valley Sports and Entertainment (SVS&E) targeted PRIDE’s 2005 middleweight tournament semi-finalist, Golden Glory’s Alistair Overeem. The pair renew acquaintances after last year’s meeting at PRIDE Total Elimination 2005 at the Osaka Dome. Overeem secured a first round victory over The Phenom via a guillotine choke who will relish the opportunity to avenge his defeat in June.

Also in action will be kickboxing sensation Cung Lee, Duane “Bang” Ludwig, Josh Thompson, Daniel Puder and James Irvin.
