The ’07 UFC welterweight picture

By UFCmania | December 1, 2006

By Tom Bones

With all the hype and talk of UFC 66, we almost forgot that Ultimate Fight Night (UFN) 7 is set to go off in less than two weeks on December 13.

It’s not a bad card, either.

Fight Opinion Radio: Episode 34

By Zach Arnold | December 1, 2006

This week, we are joined by “The Fight Professor” Stephen Quadros to talk about the latest happenings in the IFL, Cage Rage, WEC, and the WFA. Plus, Luke Nicholson and Zach Arnold break down the current MMA situation for NYE (with UFC, PRIDE, and K-1 having shows on the same weekend). Also, a long MMA news & notes segment, and of course, the world-famous grab bag (a must-listen, especially if you are a pro-wrestling fan). If you’re a student of the MMA business, then you will enjoy our show this week. Believe me, nothing on our show this week is as embarassing as this.

Also, we debut our new MySpace page this week, so check us out at http://www.myspace.com/fightopinionradio.

Op-ed: The miraculous change of Joe Silva

By Zach Arnold | December 1, 2006

By Tim Leidecker
http://www.groundandpound.de

Eccentric. Narrow-minded. Totally focused on the US market. That is the perception many MMA fans, who don’t happen to come from the “land of the free and the home of the brave”, have of UFC matchmaking. But in the past twelve months, the politics behind the scenes, usually operated by UFC matchmaker Joe Silva, have experienced a miraculous change.

Report: PRIDE wants to run shows in Brazil

By Zach Arnold | November 27, 2006

That’s the headline in Nikkan Sports today. The newspaper claims that PRIDE has received multiple offers from promoters to run events in Brazil, and given their roster of Brazilian talent, it is felt to be a natural business fit. The paper claims that the major issue facing PRIDE as far as running in Brazil is getting licensed to run shows in the country. The article also states that PRIDE is interested in running in Croatia.

Open thread Monday

By Zach Arnold | November 27, 2006

Admittedly, it’s been a slow news cycle the last couple of days. Consider this an open-thread for MMA, pro-wrestling, or boxing-related talk in the comments section. I’ll throw a few discussion points out there and see if there’s any interest in talking about them.

The Fight Network reports that Jason “Mayhem” Miller, who is facing Frank Trigg in Hawaii this Friday, will be fighting as a member of Team Quest.

The one interesting story right now in Japan is the impasse in negotiations between Choi Hong-Man and K-1. The Joong AngIlbo reports today that Hong-Man is looking for a one-year deal, somewhere in the 5-6 billion won salary range (that would be anywhere from $6-7 million USD). His camp believes that he has leverage because of marketing power in South Korea and in Asia with sponsors (along with the fact that he draws strong cable ratings for his fights back home).

Tito Ortiz’s manager recruiting girls for WWE

By Zach Arnold | November 25, 2006

By Zach Arnold

The headline says it all. With WWE management happy with the performance of model Kelly Kelly’s success (real name: Barbie Blank), WWE is now looking to recruit more model-type girls (even if they have limited or no wrestling knowledge).

Ken Pavia, who is the agent of Team Punishment, issued the following bulletin via his MySpace account on Saturday night:

Date: Nov 25, 2006 8:59 PM
Subject: Girls this is your big break opportunity…
Body: Representatives of the WWE have asked me to help locate girls for their promotion. Great opportunity and travel. Specifically they are looking for “Specifically — 18-28 yrs. Super hot. Great attitude. Big personality.”

They are putting girls on camera this Wednesday in San Clemente. Let me know if you are interested….
