Fighter gets his manhood tested in a painful way
By Zach Arnold | December 9, 2007
I was reading a daily update on Dave Meltzer’s site when I saw this paragraph:
Blake Franklin, an MMA fighter who fought on a Friday night show in Shreveport, had emergency surgery at Chritus Schumpert Highland to repair a ruptured testicle from a groin kick. Franklin said his testicle was the size of his hand from an accidental kick. the doctors told him the force of the blow was like taking a 100 mile per hour fastball directly. He said when he got the kick, he threw up in his mouth. He couldn’t tape because he couldn’t breathe. Opponent Nick Reed was awarded the win, but the commission may overturn it.
Meltzer did not mention any details as to how he found out this news story (no links or anything) or if this was original reporting on his part. So, I decided to check out The Shreveport Times newspaper online and I found the story that Meltzer was alluding to.
Roy Lang III (long-time MMA writer for The Shreveport Times) did a write-up on the “Forces of Destruction” MMA event Friday night at Shreveport’s Municipal Auditorium. Lang III has now posted an update on Franklin’s recovery from surgery.

Quote of the Day – The Guardian
By Zach Arnold | December 9, 2007
A columnist in The Guardian tries to connect US President George W. Bush, MMA’s increasing popularity in America, and a lack of safety in American football together in one paragraph:
But President Bush, who has continually spurned soft power in diplomacy, seems unlikely to reprise the role Roosevelt took a century ago. Worse still, we are in a period in which America’s tastes in sports have taken a gladiatorial turn. Ultimate fighting, the mixed-martial-arts sport in which a competitor, as in a bar fight, is allowed to hit or kick an opponent when the opponent is on the ground, has gone from the shadows to mainstream television success. Sadly, changing the nature of football equipment so as to produce a sport with less risk of injury may have to wait for the next election and a change in the national mood.

Randy Couture meets with the Green Bay Packers
By Zach Arnold | December 9, 2007
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports just wrote an article talking about the meeting between Randy Couture and Brett Favre. According to Glazer, Couture is Favre’s top sports idol.
McCarthy set up the surprise speaker perfectly. He talked to the team about fighting through adversity and what it’s like to battle through together before rolling in a highlight film of America’s most beloved mixed martial artist. The players whooped it up as Couture slammed, choked, punched and elbowed victim after victim.
“Then after the tape ended, all the sudden Randy walked into the room… you could hear a pin drop,” said McCarthy. “They were shocked. I think it took a few seconds to sink in that the guy was in the room.”
The Packers defeated the Oakland Raiders 38-7 on Sunday at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

It’s a great day in the Bloody Elbow household and a horrible day in the Fightlinker household, as Roger Huerta defeated Clay Guida at the TUF 6 finale last night. As if you didn’t have enough reasons to be excited watching that fight in the first place… Kid Nate will not have to shave his eyebrows and Fightlinker will now be subjected to humilation via photography.
If he only could’ve hung on for one more round…
Clay Guida would have apparently won on the scorecards. According to Dave Doyle at Yahoo Sports, Guida was leading Huerta 20-17 on one judge’s scorecard going into round three.

Houston columnist talks about Sam Vasquez’s death
By Zach Arnold | December 8, 2007
Jerome “King” Solomon, a former writer for The Boston Globe and current sports columnist at The Houston Chronicle, wrote an article on Saturday pleading ‘for safety in mixed martial arts.’
Here is how Solomon describes MMA supporters who tout the safety of the sport:
Like soccer zealots, politicians and $64,000 Question contestants, they have ready-made answers for every question. Talk to them and you’ll hear about death and injury rates in sporting activities from darts to cheerleading. Yes, cheerleading. Yes, darts.

Fedor on HDNet for NYE
By Zach Arnold | December 7, 2007
A curious announcement today by HDNet that Fedor’s 12/31 Saitama Super Arena fight will air live on HDNet.
Curious for a couple of reasons…
- There is still no opponent booked yet for Fedor’s fight.
- Why is HDNet so eager to telecast the Yarennoka event, an event which is backed by publicly-tainted DSE officials? Short memories, I suppose. Cuban’s already taken heat for Redacted, so I suppose airing an MMA event produced by people who worked for a company involved in a high-profile yakuza scandal won’t bug him much.
