Fedor on HDNet for NYE

By Zach Arnold | December 7, 2007

Print Friendly and PDF

A curious announcement today by HDNet that Fedor’s 12/31 Saitama Super Arena fight will air live on HDNet.

Curious for a couple of reasons…

  1. There is still no opponent booked yet for Fedor’s fight.
  2. Why is HDNet so eager to telecast the Yarennoka event, an event which is backed by publicly-tainted DSE officials? Short memories, I suppose. Cuban’s already taken heat for Redacted, so I suppose airing an MMA event produced by people who worked for a company involved in a high-profile yakuza scandal won’t bug him much.

  1. SCSI says:

At least it’s being televised. Awesome!

  2. David says:

    lol scsi 🙂

  3. John Griffin says:

Excellent. Hope they broadcast all the fights.

  4. JThue says:

Didn’t FSN and US PPV companies carry this tainted brand for years without getting into trouble? I don’t see how this should even worry Cuban, regardless of his moral practice, especially since the deal goes through M-1 Global.

  5. ttt says:

i know that MMA shouldn’t just be about the fights and that we should be worried about the “health” of the organization and the fighters and the people involved

but at the same time, it’s hard to deny that the japanese know how to setup interesting matches. and honestly, i always find it surprising how a lot of the news posted here or on the podcast which i really enjoy, you must talk about the Yakuza links everytime a japanese event is mentioned.

  6. Chris Collins says:

Ummm…because he wants to put Fedor on the air? You are really out in left field and have lost all credibility. Sports owners corrupt…for about a 100 years guy…fans want to see great sports events and great sports competitors, and Cuban is bringing it to MMA fans guy!

  7. sprewell rimz says:

I don’t think anyone in the American media cares about the Yakuza scandal whatsoever. They ran two fucking shows in America during it and no one said a word. contrary to what you think, Zach, most people are not obsessed with the scandal.

  8. Zach Arnold says:

I must remember not to stop the buzz of the junkies getting their crack.

  9. Ernest Helwig says:

Happiness is… Seeing Live MMA on New Year. Yakuza Scandal or Not..

  10. iain says:

wow great news! yeah the yakuza stuff is irrelevant to the american market. Zach did call it though, good for him. That being said I want me some Fedor no matter what.

  11. JThue says:

HDNet paying M-1 Global(or being paid for that matter) for airing a Japanese event does not automatically link Cuban to the Yakuza or any negative stigma. He’s simply dealing with the American based M-1 Global here, no? And the event would have happened regardless.

  12. spacedog says:

You know I gotta say, the fact that the Yakuza is involved does not bother me in the least. In truth I’m not really sure on what grounds it bothers others. Moral? Is it a concern that fights are fixed? really, so what if there are some shady goings on in the background. the fact is if you look at all global busines there are aspects that are trully horrible, mining in the midwest, the garment industry, factory farms using slave labor and on and on. how about Nestle selling poson to babies in Africa? The point is having some up front criminals put up some cash for a fight production is not really that big of a deal.

  13. Paul Horton says:

Zach, you do realize that to do any kind of business in Japan on any major level a company HAS to deal with the Yakuza, right?

    They own the entire country…

  14. klown says:

Wow, every single comment above criticizes Zach’s focus on Japanese MMA yakuza connections.
