Real man of genius: Roy Jones Jr.

By Zach Arnold | December 30, 2007

We have a boxing page on our site that is automatically updated with the latest news, but I do apologize for not talking more about boxing on the main page here at Fight Opinion.

With that said, this is a story I can’t pass up.

Roy Jones Jr., who loves cockfighting, apparently loves dogfighting as well.

“I was (letting them fight) to a degree, but not like that serious,” Jones Jr. told the Daily News after reporters had peppered the light-heavyweight with questions about the Knicks and his fight with Trinidad. “I just let my dogs get down five, 10 minutes, 15 minutes. Maybe like the longest I let them go was a half-hour, but I never let them fight to the death ’cause I can’t take that.

“I knew about it, but I wasn’t going to take it that seriously. I couldn’t see my dogs fight to the death ’cause they were too close of friends to me.”

Interview: White gave Mirko permission to attend Hustle event

By Zach Arnold | December 30, 2007

Tokyo Sports mobile (the newspaper) conducted an interview with Dana White on a number of subjects. The focus was on Takanori Gomi and Mirko Cro Cop.

According to the newspaper’s interview, White said that Mirko Cro Cop asked for permission to attend the Hustle event on 12/31 in Saitama and that his request was granted.

What makes this news item interesting is that Gomi appeared at UFC 79 and his agent is supposedly Ken Imai… as in the same Ken Imai who ‘controlled’ Mirko in Japan for many years in DSE after Mirko left agent Miro Mijatovic. Is Imai attempting to create an image to Japanese fighters as someone who can be a ‘wirepuller’ to get into UFC, similar to what Koichi Kawasaki has been doing?

One other interesting item in the Tokyo Sports interview involved MMA on NYE. White was asked if he was going to watch the DSE event on HDNet and he responded by saying that he wasn’t interested in watching the event. Furthermore, he said that he didn’t watch any other MMA outside of UFC (not enough time in his schedule), but he will watching boxing events. White admitted that he did watch the StrikeForce 6/22 San Jose Arena event because it featured an old friend (Phil Baroni) fighting Frank Shamrock and that he hates Frank.

‘I want NFL Network’ TV ad mocks ‘cage fighting’

By Zach Arnold | December 29, 2007

In a thinly-veiled attack on UFC (and WEC), Saturday night’s NFL Network broadcast (simulcasted on NBC and CBS) of the New York Giants vs. New England Patriots featured a TV ad spot for “I want NFL Network.”

The ad features actors mocking cable companies that claim people don’t want to pay for the NFL Network, with the spot featuring Earl from “Joe Schmo 2” Spike TV fame saying that he is subjected to four different women cable channels.

However, ‘cage fighting’ was attacked the most during the ad, with the last actor in the ad asking why cable companies think ‘cage fighting’ is more popular than the NFL.

Patriots over Giants, 38-35.
