By Zach Arnold | January 8, 2008

Steve Sievert has an update about the proposed Frank Shamrock vs. Ken Shamrock fight. He linked to this web site and wondered if it was real or not. A quick domain search claims that the web site is registered to “Frank Shamrock USA,” using GoDaddy. It was registered on December 21st.

Here is a new interview with Vadim Finkelstein.

Good news for Gina Carano — the ratings were decent Monday night for American Gladiators. (Hat tip: Mikeinformer).

Adam Swift has a breakdown comparison of UFC PPV buyrates between 2006 and 2007. Adam will be a guest on the next edition of Fight Opinion Radio.

Tonya Harding and Butterbean on the same card

By Zach Arnold | January 7, 2008

Seriously. January 26th at the USA Mitchell Center in Mobile, Alabama. Isn’t Mississippi’s athletic commission in charge of regulating some (if not all) MMA events in Alabama?

Butterbean vs. Tom Howard is the show’s main event. Plus, Butterbean’s son will be fighting on the undercard.

Monday night news review (1/7/08)

By Zach Arnold | January 7, 2008

The newest edition of Men’s Fitness magazine has a profile article on “The UFC workout.” Also interviewed in the magazine is Roy Jones Jr. Money quote from the interview:

MF: Yes, and the UFC now challenges boxing for pay-per-view buys, revenue, and fans. How do you feel about the mixed martial arts movement?

Jones Jr.: I think it’s wonderful. I’m a big fan. I watch a lot of it. I never really thought about getting in the cage, but I do love it. I love anybody that fights. That’s just what I am. I’m a fighter and I love anybody that has the heart to go in there and face somebody one on one and fight. You got to love that, you know?

I didn’t know there was a UFC star named Eric Swiger, but apparently he likes tasers.

Meet Matt Hughes’ personal dietician, Ashley Borden.

American Gladiators feedback

By Zach Arnold | January 7, 2008

Last night’s show on NBC is getting panned in both broadsheet and blogger media circles (Awful Announcing). It’s interesting to read the reaction amongst the diehard sports fans (who seemingly take the offensiveness of AG as a personal insult).

It was amusing to watch Gina Carano defend her spot on the Pyramid by pulling guard and dragging her opponent back to the ground. The promo they showed of her beating up a contestant in the joust was entertaining as well.

Quote of the Day – Dan Henderson

By Zach Arnold | January 7, 2008

Steve Sievert recently talked to Dan Henderson about his upcoming fight with Anderson Silva:

“My strength is the clinch game, and I don’t get out of position there to allow strikes,” said Henderson (22-5), who’s never been knocked out in his 10-year career. “That’s what he (Anderson Silva) thrives on, guys that are out of position and not very good in that clinch. For me, that’s where I’m going to beat him up, and if he gets there with me, I’m going to be taking him down and beating him up on the ground.”

The media whining about Fedor

By Zach Arnold | January 4, 2008

For the last month, you’ve probably seen countless articles online from various MMA media writers whining and complaining about Fedor Emelianenko’s career direction.

You know about the boilerplate rhetoric — he’s afraid of fighting the best competition, his reputation is taking a hit, etc.

Friday fight notes: IFL’s ambitious schedule

By Zach Arnold | January 4, 2008

If you have extensive WordPress experience and would be interested in helping me out on a new project, please contact me.

Fightlinker supposedly has dirt on Matt Hamill.

Look at the amount of big IFL shows on the East Coast in 2008. The Izod Center in East Rutherford (Continental Airlines Arena in the Meadowlands) is a huge building. To run that building three times in one year? Plus three dates in Las Vegas? Ambitious.

An update on Houston Alexander.

Yoshihiro Akiyama is protesting the soccer kick that Kazuo Misaki used to finish him off in their 12/31 Saitama fight.
