Wednesday work week: Oregon MMA gets publicity

By Zach Arnold | July 18, 2007

Your article of the day from the Associated Press about Oregon regulating MMA – despite the fact that MMA shows have already taken place in the state, just ask Matt Lindland. Money quote:

“To me, it is a brutal and disgusting sport,” said Sen. Alan Bates, D-Ashland, who co-sponsored the bill. “I’ve never been to an event, but I’ve watched some on TV to see what’s going on and I am not impressed. Something needed to be done.”

For those who don’t know where Ashland is, Ashland is by Medford (Southern Oregon) and is a real pricy town for both artists and skiiers. Nice place, but very expensive.

Here is the card line-up for the IFL’s August 2nd show in New Jersey.

Tuesday TV talk: HERO’s stays the course

By Zach Arnold | July 17, 2007

The HEROs show on Monday at Yokohama Arena reportedly drew a 10.9% rating on Tokyo Broadcasting System. Not a great number by any means, but an accurate reflection on a promotion with no real major star power.

Josh Gross says Royce Gracie has his reasons for not filing an appeal with the CSAC about a failed steroids test. Jake Rossen has his Notes on a Scandal.

Is there a way to stop booing at MMA events?

By Adam Morgan | July 16, 2007

The reason mixed martial arts promoters paper events is so that they can tout that their event was “sold out.” Making your product appear so appealing that tickets are hard to get makes people want to buy tickets. It’s a psychological principle known as scarcity which, in essence, makes people place value on things that are scarce. If tickets to your event seem hard to get, people assume it’s good. The more people think it’s good, the more people buy tickets. It’s that simple.

Monday morning quarterback: Back to the future

By Zach Arnold | July 16, 2007

Is the San Diego Union-Tribune lumping UFC into a story about increased violence with assaults due to punching?

Royce Gracie did not end up appealing his drug suspension in California. Steve Sievert reports that UFC 75 will be broadcast on Spike TV.

Somehow, I don’t think this is the kind of mugshot that Renato Babalu imagined would help his career out.

If you haven’t checked out the latest edition of Fight Opinion Radio, go listen. Give me your feedback on this week’s show.

I’ll have a full post about the HEROs show later today, but the main story coming out of the event is that Masakatsu Funaki will be coming out of retirement to fight on New Year’s Eve in Japan.

Sunday media slate: A Saturday full of surprises

By Zach Arnold | July 15, 2007

I took a beating over at MMA Predictions on my BodogFight match picks. I ended up picking Yoshiki Takahashi, Amar Suloev, Yves Edwards, and Roman Zentsov to win. Brutal. I did pick Yuki Kondo to lose, however. He paid the price against Trevor Langley.

Sam Caplan on the uglyness at the BodogFight show. He says there were several racist fans at the show. Sam’s comments about the racist fans is backed up both at 411 Mania and Tsuyoshi Kohsaka (in Japanese).

Dave Doyle, Yahoo Sports MMA/Boxing managing editor, joins us to discuss the UFC 73 event from last week in Sacramento. He was at Arco Arena and tells us all about the event – what kind of fans showed up, who got superstar reactions and who didn’t, etc.

We also spend some time this week discussing the blowback that Dana White is receiving from the online MMA coummunity, specifically in regards to the Chuck Liddell/Wanderlei Silva situation. Plus, our thoughts on what fight should headline UFC 76. Hint: It isn’t Liddell vs. Keith Jardine.

Saturday media slate: What’s the UFC 76 main event?

By Zach Arnold | July 14, 2007

UFC & Spike TV ink a new deal.

Chuck Liddell vs. Keith Jardine as the UFC 76 main event? One word – what? Why not book Liddell vs. Houston Alexander, the guy who beat Jardine? How about Liddell vs. Forrest Griffin, who actually won his last fight?

French middleweight Jonstomp attacked

By Mark Pickering | July 14, 2007

By Mark Pickering

French middleweight Boris Jonstomp is expected to recover his full vision but will have titanium plates inserted into his face after being attacked with a firearm in his native Paris earlier this week.

The CageWarriors veteran was set on by a highly intoxicated group of males wearing balaclavas who shot him in the face at close range with a flash-ball, a French hunting firearm, and pepper spray while he was working his ‘day job’ as a bouncer at a night club in Cergy, a suburb of Paris.

By Zach Arnold | July 13, 2007

Bad luck for the IFL – Chris Horodecki has a broken hand and won’t fight Bart Palaszewski on August 2nd in New Jersey.

BodogFight tapings are coming to Vancouver soon.

John Griffin says that the UFC 73 On Demand service was a horrible experience.

For beta testers

By Zach Arnold | July 12, 2007

I never got around to personally thanking each person who helped out with the first round of beta testing of the new design for this web site, so I want to say thank you publicly to everyone who has helped out (especially John and Andy).

If you are a beta tester, check out the beta site and look at the new post that I put up. There are improvements that have to be made to the design before I will feel comfortable launching it publicly. Beta testers, please give me feedback to the new post. It is greatly appreciated.

Thursday trash talk: Trigg and Toughman

By Zach Arnold | July 11, 2007

Yahoo Sports says the Chuck Liddell/Wanderlei Silva fight will not happen on September 22nd. UFC Junkie Finds White’s claims peculiar. Let me state one thing perfectly clear – both Dann Stupp and Kevin Iole are good writers. They’re guys who do not screw around. I suspect Dana White is going to become a hot topic on the next edition of Fight Opinion Radio.

Just a thought – is Chuck/Silva going to end up being the American equivalent of Sakuraba/Tamura, a dream fight that people will continue to talk about forever but will never see the light of day?

What can I say about Frank Trigg and Chris Rose doing commentary w/ Layla Kayleigh for “The Best Damn Toughman” show on Fox Sports Net last night? The fact that Rose deadpanned a hard sell for a tournament winner earning $1,000 USD says it all. That was one scary Oklahoma audience at the Toughman event.

The IFL stock is current at $0.74 USD/share. Update: The low so far today was $0.60 USD/share.
