Monday media marks: HBO > Spike TV for UFC
By Zach Arnold | August 12, 2007
In Japanese media circles, Ed Fishman’s appearance at the K-1 Las Vegas event on Saturday night drew some buzz. Ed said he received an invitation from K-1 to watch the show, so he did. It looks like K-1 is going to find a way to get Musashi onto the World GP show on 9/29 in Seoul after all.
If you didn’t get a chance to listen to our latest radio show, go do so now. Or, you can subscribe to our iTunes feed and download the shows automatically.

Sunday media stroll: Alexander wants to reach out to you
By Zach Arnold | August 11, 2007
Fightlinker needs some help with WordPress. E-mail him if you can help him out.
Main results from tonight’s K-1 Las Vegas show: Stefan Leko defeated Mighty Mo after 3R by a 3-0 judges’ decision (30-27 scores), Bjorn Bregy defeated Ray Sefo after 3R by a 2-1 judges’ decision, and Doug Viney (the New Zealander who won his reserve fight) defeated Zabit Samedov (Belarus) after 3R by a 3-0 judges’ decision to win the night’s tournament. K-1 claimed 5,770 paid for the show.
Remember the “how to save boxing” symposium I discussed a couple of days ago? Kevin Iole has a beautiful article on what a debacle the event turned into. It makes for great reading.
Here is an online interview with Alexander Emelianenko. That is a fantastic picture of him sitting at a computer.

Friday fight headlines: Fighter rankings gone wild
By Zach Arnold | August 10, 2007
People in boxing don’t know how to respond to the rise of MMA in America. So, naturally, a cure has been found – let’s have a media-driven symposium called “Is Boxing Down for the Count?” and have a bunch of people who made millions in boxing explain why the industry isn’t dead.
CBS Sportsline writer Mike Freeman is back with his UFC-bashing ways.
I got e-mails from friends and readers in Japan about this story, so obviously I’ll link to it here. For the first time in the history of Japanese baseball, a player has failed a drug test. Not surprisingly, it happens to be a foreign player (Ricky Guttomson). The substance in question that Guttormson tested positive for is finasteride. The Japanese angle on this test failure is that finasteride is a masking agent, although it’s a drug more commonly seen in hair-growth products. More information at The Fanhouse.

Thursday evening news update (8/9)
By Zach Arnold | August 9, 2007

The latest IFL filing with the SEC.
Adam “Pacman” Jones had quite the appearance on ESPN2 Thursday morning. This was supposed to be a TV segment helping to promote his debut in TNA wrestling, but instead it turned into a total PR nightmare debacle. And Jeff Jarrett sat right next to him, with a TNA ring in the background the entire time. Audio here.
There is quite an article at MSNBC about Dan Henderson, as he trains and prepares to face Quinton Jackson on 9/8 in London. I’m surprised more people didn’t spot a glaring error in the article, but Fightlinker caught it. Ryan is on a roll.

Thursday trash talk: The future of BodogFight
By Zach Arnold | August 8, 2007
The current RSS feed for the WEC HP is here. However, as you notice on their HP, the feed is severely lagging behind the site updates. So, two questions: a) is this the correct RSS feed to be using and b) why is the current RSS feed lagging behind time-wise?
Time for our stock market gurus to take a look-over at this latest SEC filing by Pro Elite.
The trusty Mikeinformer sent me a link to this news article, which claims that BodogFight’s deal with the Ion network will expire in February.
Sam Caplan asks an ethical question to the MMA media.
Sean Sherk’s attorney, Howard Jacobs, speaks out.

Wednesday war room: Horse play
By Zach Arnold | August 8, 2007
The estimable Dave Doyle comments on the CSAC reducing James Toney’s drug suspension from one year to six months in length:
Or maybe they’re sending the worst signal of all: Maybe California’s commissioners are a pack of hypocrites with a glaring double standard. Maybe they’re just paying lip service to the notion of cracking down on drugs and steroids by hanging the little guys out to dry. But if you’re a big-name star, regardless of whether you’re are a boxer or mixed martial artist, it’s OK to use performance-enhancing drugs — animal steroids, no less — because starstruck officials who are supposed to serve the taxpaying public will cover for you and let you off the hook.
Log’s blog has more thoughts on Toney.

Wednesday is the next meeting day for the Oklahoma Boxing Commission. Thanks to a couple of comments posted on our site tonight, the information as of tonight is that Larry Shorman (who got knocked out by Jeremiah Constant) is doing fine. You can read those comments here and here and here.

Tuesday headlines: Spencer Fisher out, Kenny Florian in
By Zach Arnold | August 7, 2007
A new edition of Total MMA is now available.
Mauro Ranallo is not a fan of what Vince McMahon said yesterday. Mauro is also not a fan of what the CSAC appeals ruling was for James Toney, either.
Spencer Fisher is not going to fight Din Thomas on 9/19 due to a staph infection. There’s a report claiming that Kenny Florian will take Fisher’s place.
Lots of camp movement these days. Fabricio Werdum is considering joining Chute Boxe and Diego Sanchez has apparently left Greg Jackson’s camp in New Mexico.

James Toney gets suspension reduced
By Zach Arnold | August 6, 2007
By Zach Arnold
After reading this LA Times article tonight, I expect there to be quite a bit of outrage on the MMA forums over the treatment Hermes Franca received from the California State Athletic Commission today in comparison to James Toney.
Toney was suspended by the CSAC earlier this year after testing positive for two steroids, including the steroid boldenone (which I chronicled in a recent CBS Sportsline article) — a horse steroid.
Franca’s year-long suspension was upheld by the CSAC, but bizarrely Toney’s suspension was reduced from a full year to six months. The rationale behind the reduced suspension, in a word, stinks.

Monday media marks: More UFC/dog fighting comparisons
By Zach Arnold | August 6, 2007
I present to you the comments from one Bert Sugar in a recent interview:
Toss Sugar a question and he fires back an opinion. I didn’t have to dig too deeply for his take on Ultimate Fighting.
“I think it appeals to people with their hats turned backwards,” he said. “It’s the Michael Vick chosen sport, I’m sure. It’s like dog-fighting. I see nothing to it. It’s bar fighting without broken beer bottles. Right now, I think Ultimate Fighting is the Chia Pet sport of the moment.”
Sean Sherk asks for an extension from the CSAC. Hermes Franca had his suspension upheld by the CSAC today.
Frank Trigg and trash talking.
I’ll be doing some guest writing over at Bloody Elbow this week, and my posts should be on the front page if Kid Nate and crew don’t forget to get an RSS feed to my posting directory to move posts over. Otherwise, expect delays in the times of when I write posts and when they make it on that site’s main page.

Newspaper rips Dana White over ESPN interview
By Zach Arnold | August 5, 2007
By Zach Arnold
This past week has not been a particularly great showing for Dana White in terms of issues relating to credibility, based on statements he made in a recent ESPN The Magazine interview. I posted criticism about White comments and Fightlinker took issue with White’s claims about nandrolone. On Fight Opinion Radio this week, our staff dissected White’s claims from top-to-bottom.
Today, Ryan Lambert of the Eagle Tribune in North Andover, MA. published quite an article, questioning Dana White’s comments in the ESPN The Magazine interview.
