Fox Sports: "Zach Arnold's Fight Opinion site is one of the best spots on the Web for thought-provoking MMA pieces."

Quote of the Day – Steve Cofield

By Zach Arnold | August 7, 2008

How Yahoo Sports MMA editor and Masshead Dave Doyle allowed this to be written, I’ll never know:

It’s matinee idol Roger Huerta against investment banker Kenny Florian at UFC 87. With good looks and smarts, Huerta is everything that Boston hates, a winner.

By Zach Arnold | August 7, 2008

(If you read Japanese, pay attention to the Hiroshi Nielsen blog for further updates.)

There is a report in the OH! CYBER PAPARAZZI publication today that K-1’s Godfather, Kazuyoshi Ishii, has been released from a Shizuoka prison at 5:30 AM JST. The report claims that Ishii was considered a ‘model citizen’ in prison and that he was released early on good behavior. Ishii had went to jail on June 11, 2007 after exhausting the appeals process in his criminal court case in regards to charges of corporate tax evasion and destruction of evidence relating to the case.

PR: “Knock Out Dog Fighting” program honored with achievement award

By Zach Arnold | August 4, 2008

Celebrity Mixed Martial Arts fighters Cung Le, Josh “the Punk” Thomson and the American Kickboxing Academy receive achievement award for their work with Kristine Crawford and For Pits’ Sake, Inc. to combat dog fighting.

Los Gatos, CA (PRWEB) August 4, 2008 — The unique structure and impact of For Pits’ Sake, Inc.’s “Knock Out Dog Fighting” program is being honored with an Achievement Award by the Animal Farm Foundation.

The Animal Farm Foundation Achievement Award is presented to individuals and pit bull dogs whose service to the community honors the human/canine bond and restores the image of the American Pit Bull Terrier.

“We at Animal Farm Foundation wish to thank For Pits’ Sake and the American Kickboxing Academy for their great work in exposing the callous cruelty of dog fighting,” said Jane Berkey, President of Animal Farm Foundation. “Kristine Crawford, her pit bulls Cheyenne, Dakota and Tahoe, the American Kickboxing Academy and MMA champions Cung Le and Josh “The Punk” Thomson are all heroes in the fight against animal cruelty.”

The “Knock Out Dog Fighting” program is part of an educational campaign designed by For Pits’ Sake founder Kristine Crawford to bring awareness to the abhorrent activity of dog fighting. “In the underbelly of a pet-friendly nation, where over 43 million households include dogs, the cruel and barbaric blood sport called dog fighting is alive and well,” said Crawford. It is estimated that there are 40,000 professional dog fighters in the United States and as many as 100,000 amateurs involved, including children and gang-affiliated teens.

Quote of the Day: Boxing is better than MMA

By Zach Arnold | August 4, 2008

Rick Morrissey in The Chicago Tribune:

Watching two guys breathing on each other for a minute or more while they try to extricate themselves from a tangle of arms and legs on the ground leaves me frustrated.

Report: Barnett vs. Arlovski booked for 10/11

By Zach Arnold | August 4, 2008

This, according to the Long Beach Press-Telegram. What makes this report so strange is that no one from Affliction has contacted the media about this fight being booked at all. Read what the LBPT article says:

Affliction announced over the weekend that its next show will feature a showdown of two of the best heavyweights in all of mixed martial arts as Josh Barnett will face Andrei Arlovski on Oct. 11 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

What announcement? Anyone who lived through the three months of hype and build-up for the first Affliction shows knows that every media writer was constantly being bombarded with e-mails full of announcements and proclamations. Now the main event of their second show is ‘announced’ to no one and instead reported quietly in the LBPT? Strange.

Fight Opinion Radio #87: Josh Barnett & Shayna Baszler

By Zach Arnold | August 3, 2008

They wanted to come on our show, so we gave them a not-so-cotton-candy Q & A session. Topics mentioned during the interview include: reports about Affliction pay cuts, will or will not Fedor fight on the second Affliction show, reasons for why Shayna got mauled by a woman named Cyborg, and why Shayna is all of a sudden buddy-buddy with Gina Carano. We’re not playing nice here on this week’s edition of the radio show.

The 87th edition of Fight Opinion Radio is now online and available to download. Download this week’s show here.

Josh Barnett: Dave Meltzer report on Affliction pay cuts is not true

By Zach Arnold | August 3, 2008

From a statement released on Saturday:

-Straight from the mouths of my friends Tom Attencio and Todd Beard; No one is being asked to take a pay cut. They would never ask anyone to take a pay cut and don’t intend to. Tom was only referring to any fighters that may have been thinking that they could get an exorbitant amount of money from Affliction just because. Again, no pay cuts asked and expected and they are doing just fine.
