Marijuana isn’t just a problem in Japanese MMA or pro-wrestling

By Zach Arnold | September 7, 2008

The usage of the wacky weed in North America doesn’t exactly carry the same kind of negative connotation as it does in Japan. (Go ahead, try and bring some grass through customs at Narita Airport and enjoy your stay in jail.) As we’ve seen in both Japanese MMA and pro-wrestling circles, those who get caught with weed face a lot of scrutiny.

With this in mind, the big story of the month in the Japanese fight game revolves around Sumo and a big marijuana scandal that has erupted. According to published reports, the head of the Japanese Sumo Association has resigned from his post after three Russian sumo fighters allegedly failed drug tests.

How big of a scandal is this right now in Japan? It’s the headline story in every single major media outlet over there as we speak. Dana White is glad that he doesn’t have to deal with this kind of reaction every time an MMA fighter fails a drug test.

Remember when the California SAC said that Kazuhiro Nakamura failed a drug test due to marijuana usage and J-ROCK (his management team) tried their hardest to deny it? Now you know why.

Defending Steve Cofield

By Zach Arnold | September 7, 2008

A lot of people apparently like to rip into him for his MMA postings online. Personally, I don’t see why there’s any hatred of Mr. Sunshine.

Steve’s been a great addition to the Yahoo MMA blog. (Did you read the Yahoo MMA blog before he started posting there? No.) He brings some color and flare that’s desperately needed in the MMA writing field, plus he’s well-connected and breaks stories (like Randy Couture and UFC mending fences).

Steve’s amusing, and he understands not to take himself too seriously unlike others in the sports writing business. If he can get paid to write about MMA in a humorous and cutting manner, then all the more power to him for doing so.

A tale of two Kevin Ioles

By Zach Arnold | September 7, 2008

Three months ago, he was calling for the retirement of Matt Hughes. Hughes had just lost to Thiago Alves, who failed to make the 170-pound weight limit and had a big size advantage in the London fight.

Today, he’s defending Chuck Liddell and suggesting that Chuck shouldn’t retire. Liddell faced Rashad Evans in the main event of UFC 88 and had a size advantage over his opponent.

Though the calls will come, there’s no need for him to retire. He’s not taking a lot of punishment and hasn’t demonstrably slowed. He was knocked out twice with one punch and lost a close decision in the other.

He possesses everything he needs to once again be a dominant player in the UFC’s marquee division, but he’s simply put most of his tools back into the box and has chosen to rely only upon his hammer.

Matt Hughes is 34 years old. Chuck Liddell is 38 years old.

Google Chrome

Anyone here using this new browser that was just released? Good, bad, ugly? Considering that I surf a ton of news sites to try to find MMA stories (and use Firefox’s browser), how do the two compare?

I know Chuck Liddell is headlining UFC 88, but…

590,000 PPV buys for this weekend’s show? If that is the case for a show that has received little or no media coverage, then UFC is truly unstoppable and everyone else in the business should get out now and cut their losses.

Two injuries alter UFC cards

By Zach Arnold | September 5, 2008

First, Karo Parisyan is out with a back injury. It’s disappointing for both Karo and his opponent, Yoshiyuki Yoshida, as this was going to be a really great fight to watch. I’m sure it will get re-booked shortly.

Second, Thiago Silva is out with a back injury and won’t face Machida at UFC 89. MDS at AOL Fanhouse asks about what will happen to Machida’s career next.

HDNET AND HDNET MOVIES ANNOUNCE AFFILIATION AGREEMENT WITH COMCAST

Addition of HDNet Programming Part of Comcast’s Project Infinity Commitment to Deliver Best and Most Content Available Anytime, Anywhere

(DALLAS) September 4, 2008 – HDNet, the leader in high definition programming, today announced a carriage agreement to add HDNet and HDNet Movies to Comcast’s strong high definition (HD) programming line up. The agreement enables Comcast, the nation’s leading provider of entertainment, information and communications products and services, to provide the two HDNet networks to HD subscribers in many of its systems, including free On Demand programming, in addition to increasing Comcast’s carriage of HDNet over the next year.

“We’re thrilled to have a partnership that will provide Comcast’s customers with top-notch HD programming. This agreement between two leading HD providers will help shape the ever-expanding world of high definition programming,” said Mark Cuban, president and co-founder of HDNet. “This marketplace agreement makes HDNet’s cutting edge, independent programming accessible to many more cable homes across the country.”

“With hundreds of HD choices available to Comcast customers, we believe that partnering with HDNet further complements our offering by bringing both compelling and high quality HD programming to our customers in this increasingly competitive marketplace,” said Matt Bond, executive vice president, content acquisition, Comcast. “This partnership is another example of the strides we’re making on our Project Infinity commitment to deliver more HD choices than anywhere else.”

Launched in September of 2001, HDNet became the world’s first national television network broadcasting all of its programming in high definition. HDNet is the exclusive, high definition home for critically acclaimed original programming, including television’s only HD news feature programs “HDNet World Report,” “Dan Rather Reports,” featuring legendary journalist Dan Rather. HDNet also features championship sports coverage from MLS to MMA and groundbreaking music programming with the HDNet Concert Series.

HDNet Movies features a wide selection of major studio theatrical releases – all uncut, unedited, and appearing in their original aspect ratio. HDNet Movies also offers exclusive Sneak Previews of first run feature films to viewers before they premiere in theaters.
