Google Chrome

Anyone here using this new browser that was just released? Good, bad, ugly? Considering that I surf a ton of news sites to try to find MMA stories (and use Firefox’s browser), how do the two compare?

  1. PizzaChef says:

Chrome sucks. First there is major controversy with the EULA/Terms of Service which is here:

    http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080903-google-on-chrome-eula-controversy-our-bad-well-change-it.html

The wikipedia article on it also raises other issues like security and such.

  2. CapnHulk says:

There was a hilarious clause in the EULA that said “Google had the right to reproduce any content users posted through its services, and that it had the right to pass that data onto third parties.” They took it out as soon as people noticed but, still, it makes you wonder.

A friend of mine said it was sleek and relatively quick. I’m happy with Firefox though.

  3. catch says:

I use chrome sometimes, I like a lot of the features it has. Plus it’s very slick, surprisingly stable for a beta, and the fastest fully featured browser out there. And regarding that EULA clause, if you install the open source version, Chromium, you don’t have to sign any EULA whatsoever.

  4. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

No. I block ads, and Goggle is an ad provider. There’s an inherent conflict of interest. I’ll wait until their supposedly peerless [ http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/roadmap/archives/2008/09/tracemonkey_update.html ] javascript rendering engine is adopted by other browsers instead.

  5. catch says:

I would imagine it’s only a matter of time until adblock (along with noscript, greasemonkey, and other useful firefox extensions) have google chrome versions, they are my major reason I haven’t completely converted yet, though.

  6. Will Emero II says:

Zach – Not worth the download yet. Chrome is a Frankenstein of Firefox, Safari, and Opera.

While fast – faster than FF3 – image rendering is awful, pictures look as if they are composed of stained glass.Since its beta, it has no RSS reader and no Adblock.I’ve tried logging into my Gmail account with it and it errors out everytime.

While these are big negatives right now, it is in Beta, meaning they’ll be worked out eventually. My advice is to hold off until the browser makes it out of Beta and into general release.

  7. Will Emero II says:

oops…Firefox is still a superior browsing experience right now. No reason to change unless you wanna see what the fuss is about.

  8. Fightlinker says:

I loved it … faster, less memory usage, and Firefox sometimes has an issue where videos only play for 2 seconds and i gotta reboot the whole thing.

BUT for some reason Chrome doesn’t like wordpress … when i try to create links for my post, the link window won’t load. So no chrome for me

  9. I tried it out just for kicks the other day and found that moved pretty fast. Still, I’m not going to switch from using Firefox. I liked it but I’ll wait until it’s released out of beta to try it again.

I’ve read a lot of complaints people are having with getting YouTube videos to play in Chrome too, which I find hilarious for obvious reasons.

  10. As a web developer by profession, I have to keep up on web standards and rendering engines of each browser. Chrome is fast, using the V8 Javascript rendering open source engine. It’s really irrelevant though as FF 3.1 will use Scrapemonkey, an even faster rendering engine. Firefox is a much better browser at this point.

Chrome has MASSIVE problems rendering Silverlight or AJAX controls. I still find sites that it can’t produce functionality for the controls, and Chrome has problems rendering those controls which causes the page to hang for a ridiculous amount of time.

  11. BTW, Fightlinker. I’ve been a fan of the actual content on your site, even though I’m more geared toward an analytic point of view. Of course, I’ve been on hiatus for a bit, but I’ve noticed one glaring problem with your site.

The layout, web standards, cross browser issues, and actual functionality of the site is atrocious at times.

You’ve currently got tabs that don’t highlight in both IE 7, FF3, and probably a number of other browsers. Also, there is some CSS differences between browsers. I can tell you, it’s hell trying to get a site to work correctly cross browser. I work everyday with those problems. For example, Safari and Chrome both handle text-align in CSS the same, hence my site has problems displaying text correctly in both. It’s hell, but… your tabs aren’t working correctly on the main Fightlinker site.

    Just a heads up.

  12. The Citizen says:

I like Chrome, but have not used it to replace FF — I did a quick check of my own websites to see how they displayed and had no problem viewing them, I actually liked how they looked in this browser. I wish we could calm down on various browsers, it does become troublesome QAing for each one. Right now I’m making my sites for the most current versions of FF and IE on the PC. As long as they look good in Chrome, I’ll support the browser, but right now, I’m still a FF guy.

  13. ttt says:

i use Seamonkey which is based on the same Mozilla engine as Firefox but looks like the old Netscape. it cuts down on all the fat.
