  1. sprewell says:

I know it’s all cool to be all Japan guy, but his name is Lyoto. Ryoto is Engrish.

  2. 45 Huddle says:

GSP, Silva, Bonnar, Kim, Guida, & Fitch. The rest I don’t care about too much.

I’m spending the $2 and watching Fitch/Gono if it is not shown on the PPV.

  3. Zack says:

LOL @ buying individual UFC fights online.

  4. Ivan Trembow says:

In the Sherdog Pros Pick feature, 15 fighters pick GSP and 14 pick Penn. However, that includes several current or former training partners who have no business being included in a poll of fighters. Unless I’m missing any, there are three GSP training partners polled (all of whom pick GSP), and there is one Penn training partner polled (who picks Penn).

Factor them out, and it’s actually 13 to 12 in favor of Penn among the pros who aren’t affiliated with either of them.

  5. Ivan Trembow says:

I really hope we’re not going to have people arguing in the next day that Fitch being in a prelim is a non-factor because you can buy UFC fights online. Even with that being the case, Fitch’s fight being on the PPV broadcast or not being on the PPV broadcast is the difference between Fitch’s fight being seen by however many people watch the PPV (1.3 million buys is Zuffa’s public estimate via Iole) plus all “UFC Vault” buyers, or Fitch’s fight just being seen by the “UFC Vault” buyers.

Even if Fitch’s fight does end up airing on the PPV if they have several short fights, the message will have still been sent just by the fact that it was a prelim that wasn’t assured an airing on the show.

It’s an incredibly transparent next step in the “This is what happens if you f–k with us” game. That game isn’t even kept private anymore, as Dana White said in that CBC segment that disputes over fighter pay and fighter contracts are “war” to him “and there will be casualities.” Based on his public statements lately, Fitch clearly got the messager from his one-day firing and is behaving accordingly.

  6. David says:

Will Fitch ever be an elite top level fighter who can dominate the division, or an exciting grappler/knockout artist… I don’t think so.

  7. Ivan Trembow says:

“Will Fitch ever be an elite top level fighter who can dominate the division?”

Well, it’s not like Fitch is the #2 or #3 ranked welterweight in the world… no wait, he is.

I’m sure you would use the same logic to justify the fact that C.B. Dollaway vs. Mike Massenzio was a PPV main card bout, and so was Cheick Kongo vs. Mostapha Al-Turk, and so is Stephan Bonnar vs. Jon Jones.

Are any of those fighters “elite top level fighters who can dominate the division”?

  8. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Gono is a fighter that Fitch should finish. If he does it, then it will be on the PPV.

  9. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

If Bonnar is able to make a successful comeback from this long layoff, then he will be a dominant force in UFC’s LHW again. Kongo’s in line for a title shot.

Dollaway? Probably has photos of someone, but at least he can finish a fight.

  10. Ivan Trembow says:

Stephan Bonnar a dominant force in the UFC light heavyweight division? lol

Stephan Bonnar a dominant force in the UFC light heavyweight division AGAIN? as if he was before? Come on, man.

Also, if your argument is that Fitch being unable to finish fights that he wins is justification to keep him off the main card, you’re going to need a better argument.

Fitch is 7-1 in the UFC, with 4 of his 7 wins by stoppage.

Parisyan is 9-3 in the UFC, with 2 of his 9 wins by stoppage.

  11. sprewell says:

Ivan Trembow, the anti Zuffa troll. Awesome.

  12. Ivan Trembow says:

lol, please let me know if I said anything in my previous post that wasn’t true

  13. Fluyid says:

The Bonnar/dominant force statement HAS to be a joke, right?

  14. 45 Huddle says:

I agree with Ivan on this one. Fitch should be on the main card.

As for Stephan Bonnar…. He is a gate keeper. His only losses are to Griffin, Machida, & Evans. And guess what? They are all Top 5 fighters.

  15. 45 Huddle says:

MMA Live is doing a weigh-in special right now. Also a show at 9pm tomorrow, and at 1am tomorrow (eastern times) for pre and post fight. I really like the coverage.

  16. Zack says:

Gono is extremely hard to finish, but I wouldn’t expect you to know that cuz it doesn’t seem like you watch much MMA. Since he showed up in Pride Bushido like 5 years ago, he’s only been stopped twice…by Dan Henderson & Shogun.

I’m sure the streak goes back further, but I’d have to check the fight finder.

  17. 45 Huddle says:

    News from MMA Live….

    1. Wanderlei Silva is dropping down to 185 lbs. And will try to do it by June or July.

    2. Winner of Jardine/Jackson gets the next title fight, not the winner of Machida/Silva. I’m hoping winner of Jardine/Jackson can’t fight at UFC 100.

    3. If Penn wins, he will have to choose which title he defends. Which means I assume there is a chance for Florian/Sherk 2.

  18. Fluyid says:

I have to put this somewhere.

Diego Sanchez may be literally insane.

I have always admitted that I enjoy the complete trainwreck that is Carson’s Corner. It’s so bad that it’s good.

Diego Sanchez on Carson’s Corner talking about the healing properties of stevia is about as good as it gets.

Theater of the absurd to the extreme: http://carsonscorner.podomatic.com/entry/2009-01-30T15_55_47-08_00

  19. Ivan Trembow says:

“As for Stephan Bonnar…. He is a gate keeper. His only losses are to Griffin, Machida, & Evans. And guess what? They are all Top 5 fighters.”

That is true, other than Bonnar’s gift decision victory over Sam Hoger.

Speaking of drug testing (okay, I’m sorry, that’s a bad transition, but I was going to post this anyway):

There was no out-of-competition drug testing done on GSP, Penn, or any other fighter on the UFC 94 card. The same goes for the three previous major MMA events in Nevada. I have a story about this up at this URL: http://www.ivansblog.com/2009/01/mixed-martial-arts-no-out-of.html

  20. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Bonnar to drug testing is a perfectly valid transition.

  21. Ivan Trembow says:

As for the news items from MMA Live, in this case I don’t doubt that all three of those particular news items are probably true, but it’s hard to automatically believe too much of what is reported as “breaking news” on MMA Live, given that it was just like two months ago (shortly before the 12/10/08 event) when Franklin McNeil reported with apparent certainty on MMA Live that Josh Koscheck was done with the UFC and the Yoshida fight was going to be his last in the UFC, win or lose. That turned out to be so accurate that it was just a few weeks later that Koscheck’s long-term UFC contract renewal was announced.

  22. Steve4192 says:

“Factor them out, and it’s actually 13 to 12 in favor of Penn among the pros who aren’t affiliated with either of them.”

    1. Lindland has also trained extensively with BJ (he even cornered him in the first GSP fight), so you should toss him out along with Rude Boy.

    2. You should probably just exclude all the Hawaiians and all the Canucks, as they are picking guys based exclusively on where they are from. Throw out Niko, Black Mamba, & possibly Hackleman.

  23. Steve4192 says:

“There was no out-of-competition drug testing done on ”

I suspect this is a budgetary issue rather than a grand Zuffa/NSAC conspiracy.

The out of competition testing program is expensive. Given the current econmic environment and the budget crunch that federal, state & local governments are experiencing, it wouldn’t surprise me if that program has been suspended in an effort to cut costs. Everyone is feeling the squeeze of the economy being in the shitter, even NSAC.

  24. Ivan Trembow says:

Steve— I forgot that about Lindland. Thank you for the info. That would make it an even 12 to 12 when one factors out current or former training partners.

As for the out-of-competition drug testing program, the NSAC didn’t say any of that, and the last time they gave fighters a vacation from out-of-competition drug testing, it was over four months long and they said that the reason was to make it unpredictable.

  25. Jim Allcorn says:

Just 90 minutes from PPV time & I’m really hoping for some good fights.

And, on a side note, I feel compelled to bring up today’s press release/announcement regarding the UFC’s new line of jewelry. Yet another example of the apparent Wal Mart-ization of Zuffa’s money machine.
