Steve Barry: Seth Petruzelli contract shows no knockout bonus, contradicting the claims of Jeremy Lappen

By Zach Arnold | October 27, 2008

Print Friendly and PDF

The company is dead, but the stand-up scandal is still warm — here’s why.

I’ve contended since this scandal broke that Jeremy Lappen should not go away from this scandal unscathed, unlike Gary Shaw and other characters involved in the company.

  1. ttt says:

so the Flordia Commission said no evidence of fight fixing and they also say that the contract had no KO bonus but Lappen says there was? doesn’t this mean the Commission should do more work?

  2. Pops Freshenmeyer says:

Didn’t you say you were going to explain why your site was taken down two weeks ago? You never actually bothered to do that.

  3. Fluyid says:

It’s funny. They got caught. Everyone pretty much knows they got caught.

I doubt anyone truly thinks that they did NOT pay Petruzelli to stand and to NOT throw thai kicks. Of course they did.

I sense that some people have a “so what?” attitude about this, but I agree with Zach that, at some level, the integrity of the sport is at stake.

  4. Rob Maysey says:

You won’t find this in the bout agreement–it is likely contained in the promotional agreement.

Why aren’t all of these agreements filed with the ACs? Why are payments hidden?

In short, why are the rules for MMA any different than for boxing?

  5. Alan Conceicao says:

I doubt any of these bonuses are written on paper. Who the hell would write up a legal document detailing an illegal action?

  6. klown says:

For some silver lining to all the doom and gloom, picture the dream fights we could see in just this coming year.

    For Anderson Silva:
Liddell, Okami, GSP, Bisping, LHW Champion (Griffin/Evans/W.Silva/Jackson)

    For GSP:
BJ Penn, Thiago Alves, Anderson Silva, Jake Shields, Diego Sanchez

  7. Zack says:

Anderson Silva vs Okami or Bisping are dream fights? LOL

  8. klown says:

No, but in between superfights, a champion has a duty to defend his belt in his own weightclass. Okami deserves a shot, and Bisping will earn his if he beats the winner of Henderson vs Franklin.

  9. The Gaijin says:

Bisping will get TOOLED against the winner of Franklin/Henderson.

  10. cyph says:

    I concur.

  11. The Gaijin says:

And I should add that I actually think Bisping is better than I thought he was before the Leben fight. Cyph and I had a bit of a dialogue on where he stands, and I must admit he looks quite sharp in his technique and is fundamentally sound.

But the fact of the matter is he fought a pretty conservative fight, which is understandable given Leben’s insane chin and KO power, but he looked like he’d be in pretty deep waters against anyone in the top 10 at this point.

I’m willing to give the guy time to develop as a fighter and see where he stands in a 18-24 months, but in the near future he isn’t “in their league”.
