Report: Bonnar tests positive for steroids
By Zach Arnold | September 6, 2006
Source: MMA Weekly.
Boldenone is an anabolic steroid that is intended for use only by veterinarians, specifically to help rehabilitate injured horses. It has several brand names for veterinary use, including Equigan, Equipoise, Ultragan, and Ganabol. It is on the banned substances list of all the major athletic commissions and sports leagues.
If you recognize the name boldenone, it’s because American baseball players have been caught or accused of taking it – including Matt Lawton.

Alleged changes in WWE’s drug testing policy
By Zach Arnold | September 6, 2006
By Zach Arnold
On Wednesday, Bryan Alvarez reported that there are changes happening with the WWE’s “Wellness” Policy (aka drug policy). Alvarez reports that wrestlers who now fail tests (and receive suspensions such as 30-day, 60-day, etc.) will continue to appear on television, but they will be working for free during the time of their suspension. Furthermore, Alvarez claims that several wrestlers on the RAW roster did, in fact, fail drug tests and will continue to be wrestling on the road without earning a salary.

Media notes for upcoming MMA events
By Zach Arnold | September 6, 2006
- This weekend is the IFL show in Portland, Oregon. It’s not getting much attention online, but the local press in Oregon has been covering it. Antonio Inoki is scheduled to make an appearance at the event, meaning the IFL show will no doubt receive coverage in the Japanese press. Making Inoki’s team, well, unique, is that bodybuilder Ken Yasuda and Kendo Ka Shin (Tokimitsu Ishizawa) are coaches for Inoki’s Tokyo Sabres team. Team members include: John Cole, Katsuhisa Fujii, Kazuhiro Hamanaka, Tom Howard, Shane Johnson, Masayuki Kono, Amos Satelo, & Ed West.
- This weekend also features a big event at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, California. Our very own Erin Bucknell is scheduled to be in attendance, so Erin will try to have a report on the site by Sunday. This show, too, has been receiving a lot of local coverage in the Bay Area.
- The StrikeForce event in October in Fresno, California continues to shape up with an intriguing card. The advertised card so far: Tank Abbott vs. Paul Buentello, Josh Thomson vs. Duane “Bang” Ludwig, Wesley “Cabbage” Correira vs. Ruben “War Path” Villareal (the man who faced Bas Rutten on the WFA 7/22 Los Angeles event), Bobby Southworth vs. Anthony Ruiz, and other fights featuring Trevor Prangley, Jason Von Flue, Casey Olson, Antonio Banuelos, and Philip Perez.
- Jason “Mayhem” Miller continues to garner attention in the mainstream press, both in Hawaii and Southern California. Miller is quickly becoming a bonified cult star in the industry.

BJ Penn vs. Matt Hughes II
By Luke | September 6, 2006
In case you’ve been living under a rock somewhere, UFC is having a HELL of a year. Coming off UFC 61, where a re-match between Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock drew 775 thousand buys on PPV, and UFC 62 which will probably do in the range of 450-500 thousand PPV buys, UFC is extremely hot right now. So, people might be wondering, can a match between BJ Penn and Matt Hughes continue the awesome momentum of UFC in 2006? My answer would be an enthusiastic YES.

Media focus on Mike Tyson
By Zach Arnold | September 5, 2006
By Zach Arnold
ESPN aired a segment on the Tuesday edition of their Outside the Lines: First Report show, focusing on the rise and fall of Mike Tyson. The segment, titled Split Decision by Jeremy Schaap, profiled Tyson’s latest antics in Las Vegas and whether or not his retirement from boxing was permanent. Tyson is currently “training” on a daily basis in the lobby of the Aladdin Hotel, right across the Aladdin’s “Wedding Chapel.” Tyson is working out in front of the public for 45 minutes each day, six days a week. Last Saturday, 700 people crowded to watch Tyson spar in a boxing ring at the hotel. The fans were shown popping loudly for whatever Tyson did in the ring. Tyson interacted with the fans on an in-house microphone, along with taking photographs with the fans.

Media quote of the day
By Zach Arnold | September 5, 2006
Dana White in the Miami Herald on an impending HBO deal:
‘There’s never a deal until a deal is done, . . . but, yeah, we’re going to do a deal with HBO,” White said. “HBO is getting pulled, kicking and screaming, into this thing. They’ve obviously spent millions of dollars on boxing. [HBO Sports president] Ross Greenberg has boxing gloves running through his veins. It’s a real kick in the [groin] for all the boxing people to see this thing coming up the way it is. It is what it is. It’s here. It’s not going anywhere. This is what all the young people like. It’s going to be around for a while.”

Dana White on Wrestling Observer Live
By Luke | September 4, 2006
Dana White joined Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Live last night, and came off better in that hour than I think Dana has come off in quite some time.
The interview covered a range of topics, which didn’t include PRIDE’s foray into the United States, but they touched on Tito Ortiz, BJ Penn, fighter salaries, judging, The Ultimate Fighter, PPV hype shows, DVD distribution, expansion outside of Nevada, etc. It was a great hour of radio, where Dana even took calls.
A transcript of the interview will be available at wrestlingobserver.com. I believe that the program will be replayed this afternoon on Sportsbyline affiliates at 3pm eastern, or you can subscribe to WOL podcasts through iTunes, and listen to the program that way (it hadn’t been put up, last I checked).

Toney vs. Peter
By Zach Arnold | September 3, 2006
We’re talking about the James Toney vs. Samuel Peter fight from Saturday night in Los Angeles. Read some recaps and decide for yourself who won the fight. One thing is for sure – drawing 9,852 fans at Staples Center is quite an eye-opener.
Fight Report | Los Angeles Times | FOX Sports | Long Beach Press-Telegram | New York Daily News | The Sweet Science
A quote from the LA Times article:
Duva said he was more interested in seeing his fighter take on World Boxing Council champion Oleg Maskaev.
The same Oleg Maskaev who, last month, drew an estimated 60,000 buys on PPV for his fight against Hasim Rahman.

Dana White talks about PRIDE – again
By Zach Arnold | September 3, 2006
By Zach Arnold
From an interview in the Chicago Sun-times:
Pride is coming to Vegas. How will that affect the UFC? Not at all. They’re having financial trouble. They lost their TV distribution in Japan. There are a lot of accusations they’re not good guys.
Could you guys merge? We could buy them.
I’m starting to find it fascinating that he is willing to play the “yakuza card” in the media about PRIDE now. He wasn’t saying this in July when the company had lost their Fuji TV deal, but he now suddenly starts throwing the “bad guy” label on PRIDE in the media now? Mr. White wasn’t labeling PRIDE “bad guys” in 2003 when he worked with them in the same year that their first President under the Dream Stage Entertainment banner (Naoto Morishita) was found dead in a Japanese hotel bathroom and suspicions were raised about that situation.
