Sunday news & notes: Money, money, money
By Zach Arnold | October 27, 2007
Chael Sonnen wants to fight Frank Shamrock.
An interview with Carlos Newton.
Taking a look at UFC’s PPV bonus scale. Plus, two interesting posts (here and here) at the Xtreme Couture MMA site.
I went to the UFC 78 web site and noticed that the folks at Zuffa sure like the blood splattering effect a lot in their UFC 78 video promo.
Russian MMA has a curious report about Aleksander Emelianenko vs. Gilbert Yvel being booked for the first M-1 Global show this February in Chicago. Chicago is the closest big-market city to Monte Cox’s home district, which is the Quad Cities area. Regarding claims in the report about MMA happening in Illinois and in a ring, that’s nothing new (considering that the IFL has ran in the Chicago area before). What makes this news item interesting is that MMA was recently approved for regulation in the state of Illinois, but sanctioning won’t start until July 1st of 2008.
So, what does this mean for M-1? On paper, the theory would be that M-1 can run their Chicago event under the PRIDE-style rules that they claim they will run under and not have to deal with the Unified Rules that an athletic commission would impose on them. It’s a clever tactic on their part. The other big state in which they could pull off a similar tactic is in Massachusetts, where the Boxing Commission right now isn’t regulating MMA events (so you can run with the rules you want to). As you’ll note in the Sun-Times article, UFC wanted the regulation to be passed by January 1st. I’m sure UFC is even more interested now in seeing an amendment to the legislation to speed up the regulation process.

Friday fallout: More confusion than clarity
By Zach Arnold | October 26, 2007
Oh yeah, there’s a ShoXC event tonight. Shayna Baszler is fighting on the card. Watch the show.
So, there were dueling press conferences between UFC and Randy Couture on Las Vegas on Thursday. Here is the audio from Couture’s press conference. Kevin Iole was at the Randy Couture press conference and Dave Meltzer covered the UFC conference call. Steve Cofield also has a ton of audio clips from the UFC conference. MMA Weekly has quotes from Couture’s media session. At the UFC press conference, it was announced that UFC and Spike TV will continue to work together through 2011. More notes at MMA Madness.
The folks at MMA Opinion are taking notice at the mainstream media’s silence about the dueling press conferences.

Dana White vs. Randy Couture
By Jeff Comstock | October 25, 2007
I’ll be updating this thread as the news comes in from the dueling press conferences.
Dana White’s conference can be heard on Yahoo live at 4 p.m. ET. To listen in, just click here.
Randy’s conference will be broadcast live at ProElite.com and HDNet at 4:30 p.m. ET.
The TV deal announcement is the Spike deal. The first question asked is from the Canadian Sun newspapers.
The first question was asked if Dana had intentionally scheduled the press conference to compete with Randy Couture’s press conference. After talking around the question, and sounding like an idiot. Dana eventually said that his intention was “not to fuck with Randy Couture’s press conference.”
The new fight deal with Spike runs for the next four years. It includes at least 12 live fight cards per year, 6 more season of TUF, and new shows being developed over the course of the contract, including a new fight series running in 2010 and 2011.
Dana White is being Dana White, a lot of spin. Dana has many several sycophantic journalists throwing him some softballs. I’m moving over to the Couture press conference and we’ll pick up the rest of Dana White later.
ProElite.com is running at it’s usual slow pace for an event, I guess many are joining in to watch. They seem to be having some problems over at the site, I and many others are not receiving the video stream.
We have video!

Thursday trash talk: Head to head in Las Vegas
By Zach Arnold | October 24, 2007
That whole drug testing thing in California for MMA… what can you say.
Lots of big talk and proclamations about M-1 over at Russian MMA.
Sean Salmon vs. Jason “Mayhem” Miller is set for December 15th in Dallas for HDNet Fights.
The latest IFL SEC filings. Plus, their updated prospectus.
NBC Sports has a video interview with Fedor.
ProElite.com will be streaming the Randy Couture press conference live online tomorrow. If anyone can capture some of the video highlights and put them on YouTube or DailyMotion, I would appreciate it very much (it would make my job easier to pull the audio from those sites for our radio show).
Dana White scheduling a conference call to run against Randy Couture’s press conference in Las Vegas? A move straight out of the Vince McMahon 101 playbook. Couture vs. White is escalating in Hogan vs. McMahon political proportions. Fightlinker has the playbook from Cut Throat Business Tactics 201. MMA Weekly supposed has seen what a standard Zuffa contract looks like and the ‘retirement’ clause in it. Keep in mind, this is an independent contractor situation.

Wednesday war room: Do you care about Liddell vs. Silva?
By Zach Arnold | October 23, 2007
I want to send my regards to Jeff Comstock, who will moving a lot of his columns over to Bloody Elbow. You can check out Jeff’s latest BE article here.
The IFL stock this morning has plunged down to $0.33/share.
The UFC 77 payscale.
Bleacher Report calls Randy Couture a joke. The author continues to fan the flames:
Your all entitled to your opinions but mine still stands. You say those cheesy movies give him lots of money..then I say he’s a sell out. When does it become more about money than fighting? I’ll be here watching the real fighters. And as I stated before goo, Couture certainly has earned the right to pick his last remaining fights, but then why did he decide to fight for the belt, only to leave so soon. I would of liked to see how far he could of gone with it.
Kevin Iole talks about Tim Sylvia:
Sylvia isn’t a highly skilled fighter. The reason he’s a top guy is his size and his sheer power. But he hurts himself, as I said above, by not throwing more. He needs to be active, active, active, active.
UFC announced that Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva will happen on 12/29 in Las Vegas.
Sam Caplan ranks MMA’s Top 10 overachievers. I’m not buying Sakuraba as an overachiever.

M-1 Global hires Monte Cox, signs Fedor Emelianenko, who are they?
By Jeff Comstock | October 22, 2007
Question: What do you get when you cross Fedor Emelianenko with, a producer of off-Broadway musicals, the agency that represents the world’s greatest tennis players, Monte Cox, and a Scientologist money maven?
Answer: Apparently M-1 Global MMA
After a press conference (video) following a PRNewswirerelease there are still more questions than answers swirling about MMA’s newest wannabe mega-promoter.
It was revealed that Fedor Emenlianenko is signed to a two-year, six-fight term deal with the new company. In the earlier press release it was announced that agent of the MMA stars, Monte Cox would become the promotion’s President & CEO. After that, the details of the venture all become a little bit sketchy.

Tuesday news & notes: Sakuraba vs. Funaki officially booked
By Zach Arnold | October 22, 2007
The big news of the day is that K-1 announced Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Masakatsu Funaki for their 12/31 Osaka Dome event.
Regarding the M-1 situation, there are two separate SEC dockets related to Sibling Entertainment (here and here). Which docket should we be paying more attention to?
Mistaken translations at the M-1 NYC press conference.
“From the first conversation I had with Brock Lesnar, I was confident that he was gonna fight in the UFC,” said White. “He had fought in another show, and after he fought in that show, he realized what it was like to fight in a rinky-dink organization. Fighters and athletes of that caliber want to come to the UFC because this is the place to be. It’s the most professional, it’s got the best fighters in the world and if you want to make your name and cement your legacy, the UFC is the only place to do it.”

Monday afternoon news update (10/22)
By Zach Arnold | October 22, 2007
Jeff Comstock will be working on a longer article tonight for the site about the new backers of M-1. What a strange situation that is. To prepare you for Jeff’s longer article, here are the news developments from today:
Monte Cox, agent of a lot of MMA stars, will be the company’s CEO. MMA Analyst has you covered in regards to Sibling Entertainment Group, the new backers of M-1. UFC Mania claims that M-1 will go under PRIDE rules for their bouts. Notes from today’s press conference at The Fight Network, MMA Junkie, and the Observer. More details here, including discussion of working with former PRIDE staffers. Huh…
On Mike Sawyer’s newest radio show, he and Oliver Copp talk about the upcoming Xtreme Couture vs. Kobra Kai 11/3 submission grappling event in Las Vegas.

Monday headlines: The next big thing… in MMA
By Zach Arnold | October 21, 2007
So, there are a lot of MMA sites marking out right now over UFC’s signing of Brock Lesnar. For those who don’t know Lesnar’s past track record in the fight industry, read here. Adam Swift has further thoughts. So does MMA Analyst and his alter-ego, Leland Roling.
Luke Thomas has more thoughts on the UFC 77 show. One thing I do want to address in Luke’s post are his comments about The Predator. The guy is legitimately tough, make no question about it. He gave Remy Bonjasky all he could handle in the K-1 ring. I would love to see Predator in one of the bigger MMA leagues right now.
An update on the StrikeForce one-night tournament in November.
The latest update on the brand new online fighter ranking system.
A Carlson Gracie Jr. sighting.
Putting to rest the rumors about Rich Franklin retiring soon.
The proposed fight between Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva has still not been signed.
A new, experimental way to score MMA fights.
Katsuyori Shibata has been booked for the HERO’s 10/28 Seoul event. He will be fighting Heo Min-Seok of CMA Korea.

Sunday hangover: Day after UFC 77
By Zach Arnold | October 21, 2007
Video of Dana White’s comments from the UFC 77 post-fight press conference.
Over at The Fightworks Podcast, they have a new audio interview with Ricardo Almeida.
Don Frye is not a man you want to fight on the street or in a bar. Someone tried to do this, inexplicably.
Over at MMA Predictions, not a single person out of a crowd of 431 people was able to correctly predict 100% of the winners on the 9-match fight card.
