Matt Serra goes to Albany

By Zach Arnold | May 6, 2008

Well, it’s not exactly Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, but Matt Serra is getting plenty of ink in various broadsheets for appearing in Albany (New York’s state capital) on Tuesday to lobby on behalf of MMA regulation in the state.

Not much news happening…

By Zach Arnold | May 6, 2008

If anyone can find me an RSS feed for the articles Josh Gross writes on SI, I’ll add it to our page.

The one ‘interesting’ story of the day is Matt Lindland reportedly threatening to file a lawsuit against the ex-wife of politician Bob Packwood.

Media notes: Steve Sievert

By Zach Arnold | May 5, 2008

Steve Sievert, who covered MMA for The Houston Chronicle, has left the newspaper and is now with MMA Junkie. Replacing Steve at the Chronicle is Jared Barnes.

I can’t say enough good things about Steve and his writing ability.

Chaos with DREAM

By Zach Arnold | April 29, 2008

Too long to translate, but the summary is that between fighters like Masakatsu Funaki losing and Kiyoshi Tamura suffering a finger injury, everything is in a state of flux right now with both DREAM GP tournaments. In other words, expect some past fighters (like JZ Calvan) to be possibly re-booked as replacements in the tournament format.

Fight Opinion Radio #80: Josh Barnett & Shayna Baszler

By Zach Arnold | April 27, 2008

We decided to go with a different format for this radio show. This time around, the guests are the co-hosts… and it made for some interesting radio. Listen to Mr. Barnett discuss his philosophy on catch wrestling (in relation to jiu-jitsu) and his pointed comments towards Eddie Bravo. Shayna discusses her future with Elite XC and what she really thinks of Gina Carano. Plus, Josh & Shayna close out the show with an embarassing segment sure to draw a high quarter-hour rating, Shayna’s Secrets. How could this possibly go wrong?

The 80th edition of Fight Opinion Radio is now online and available to download. Download this week’s show here.

Tony Reali of ESPN talks MMA

By Zach Arnold | April 22, 2008

In an interview with Michael David Smith of AOL Fanhouse:

I’m really interested to see how MMA does this year on network TV. My gut tells me we have to get MMA. If somebody asked you 10 years ago would ESPN put poker on you’d have said no. There’s a resistance right now from an older generation, not just at ESPN but my grandfather was a huge boxing fan, I don’t know if he’d be taking to MMA.

I know how Tony and Michael feel, which is that it’s too brutal to put on television. We’ve talked about putting Rampage Jackson on PTI and what happens in the end is they can’t get past the brutality of it. I don’t know that it’s really more brutal than boxing, there are long-term injuries in boxing. I think it’s compelling. When you watch it you can see what the appeal is, and I think it will be a ratings success on network TV.
