Today’s chalkboard (5/5/08)
By Zach Arnold | May 4, 2008
I’m not dead, but mainstream media coverage of MMA sure has been the past couple of weeks. I expect that to dramatically change in the next week, as we will see the heat-up for Sherk vs. Penn and also the upcoming EXC show at the end of this month.
Onto today’s headlines.
- The South Florida Sun-Sentinel: UFC champions Antonio Nogueira, Anderson Silva partnering on fight academy in downtown Miami
- The Toronto Sun: 18-year old Gavin Clark fighting for MMA glory
- The South Florida Sun-Sentinel: Parents advocate their kids involvement in MMA and are not concerned about too much violence
- The Boston Herald: Joe Lauzon rolls with punches
- MMA Junkie: MMA wagering – beating closing lines
- The LA Times: UFC targets show for Latino audience
- Bloody Elbow: Affliction fumbles again
- Seattle PI: Breakdown of Sean Sherk vs. BJ Penn fight coming up
- Setanta Sports (UK): The Prodigy’s got no bottle – Sean Sherk
- The Dayton Daily News (Ohio): First impressions crucial to EXC’s debut on CBS
- The Fall River Herald-News (MA): Head to the library, not the dojo

About the Affliction piece, it also said that Affliction allegedly had a blow-up with Golden Boy Promotions (which was reported on in March). I guess that was untrue since this past Saturday’s fight (Oscar De La Hoya UD12 over Steve Forbes) was sponsored by Affliction. And when Bernard Hopkins fought Joe Calzaghe Hopkins was wearing an Affliction shirt after the fight. So either the alleged blow up didn’t happen or they patched everything up in due time.
Apparently, Vegas gaming companies (casinos) are having financial problems.

Tropicana is filing reorganization papers…
We all know how gaming and fights are connected at the hip in the US, so this could potentially be a big deal.
Chuck-
It wasn’t a “blow-up”. The partnership for their rumored MMA promotion fell through, which is true. Golden Boy has announced it is backing out of the MMA market. That doesn’t mean Golden Boy banned Affliction sponsorships from their boxing shows. You’ve associated two separate and unrelated events and came to the wrong conclusion.
Here’s the article in which ODLH announces GB has decided to stay out of the MMA market.

That sounds more reasonable to me. Thanks Ice. But I rechecked that other piece (it’s linked in the Affliction tumbles piece) and it does say they backed away from eachother in general. So obviously they reported wrong.
