The Ultimate Fighter Season 4, Episode 5
By Erin | September 14, 2006
By Erin BucknellÂ
We REALLY didn’t need a recap of the staph infection, thanks.
The coaches discuss how they thought having Smith fight Lutter was a weird decision. Clementi speculates that it was Serra trying to protect Sell. Shonie backs up this idea.
Serra makes it known that if he is going to be fighting this week, he wants it to be against Clementi.
Shonie is once again wandering around sans pants and decides to throw all the water bottles into the pool in order to make a gigantic floatie. All I can say is “huh?†Especially as there appears to be a bright green raft right there.
Roommate Jen and I both decide that Randy really needs to learn to love the bic. So much hotter than only half a head of hair.
Team No Love decides who’s coming back by coin toss and Spratt wins. I know that they did it that way so as not hurt anyone’s feeling or whatever, but couldn’t there have been a less arbitrary way of going about this? Spratt is thinking about stepping aside for Clementi.
Shonie then decides to play loud ass pool at 3:15 in the morning and can’t seem to understand how this could be annoying to others. He then throws the water bottles back into the pool. Shonie, you fly under no one’s radar.
Jen and I make completely inappropriate comments about Rich Franklin and his “teacher†commercial.
Spratt finally decides that he will be the one to come back.
Shonie now decides to put the water bottles in a plastic bag and uses it for his floatie. I’m still not getting why he doesn’t just use the real raft. He’s totally a little kid with an art project. “But I don’t want the real raft mommy; I want the one I made!!!!â€
The fight is announced as Din Thomas vs. Mikey Burnett
Apparently Team No Love picked Din to fight as they figured his staph infection would be all nice and full blown. Problem is, Din is on medication.
Recap of Din’s fights in the UFC including his losses to Penn and Uno and his wins over Iha and Serra.
Recap of Burnett’s UFC wins over Tadue and Saunders (nice loin cloth shorts he was sporting, by the way). He wasn’t fought since 99.
Round 1: Lots of the standup with Mikey looking a bit better to start out. The fight hits the ground with Burnett in Thomas’ guard. Thomas goes for a triangle choke but Burnett sneaks out and they are back to standing. Burnett blocks a takedown and Thomas immediately goes for a triangle. Burnett almost gets out again, but Din manages to hang on get the win. Din is now confident that he can make it all the way to the end.
Next week McCarthy gets a new nickname, Jorge gets a new kid and Rich Franklin comes to visit. And honestly, when I hear that two people are looking to bang their way to victory I automatically think of some kind of weird ass porn tournament.

By Zach Arnold | September 14, 2006
A Loudon County judge today agreed to review a request for a mental health assessment for Carlos Alberto de Oliveira, a Brazilian professional jujitsu fighter accused of trying to open the cabin door of a Dulles-bound airliner Tuesday night as it cruised at 30,000 feet over Tennessee.
Yamasaki said de Oliveira, whose name is listed on a Web site for International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation, has also achieved some notoriety in Japan where he has fought in ultimate fighting tournaments with the Brazilian Top Team, a Brazil based jujitsu team that has spawned hundreds of schools around the world.

Louisiana politician tries to ban MMA
By Zach Arnold | September 13, 2006
After last year’s debacles in Boston and Taunton, MA. to try to ban MMA (along with the troubles in the Dakotas), this year provides us with larger areas trying to ban the industry. First, it was Eugene (Oregon). Second, it was Kentucky. Now, it’s Louisiana, a state that once featured a UFC event in Lake Charles.
The Daily Advertiser reports that Louisiana State Rep. Emile “Peppi” Bruneau (spelled Bruno in the article) called the state attorney general to get MMA banned in the state. The boxing commission, which oversees MMA regulation in the state, is completely against Bruneau’s attempts to ban the sport. Here is the home page for Mr. Bruneau.

Eugene moves forward for MMA ban
By Zach Arnold | September 12, 2006
By Zach Arnold
Last Saturday night, the IFL drew over 5,300 paid at The Rose Quarter in Portland, Oregon. Oregon maintains a very good record nationally for their grass-roots support and training of MMA fighters, specifically with Team Quest. However, a major city in Oregon has been debating for the last few months about banning MMA. That city is Eugene, Oregon. In an article in The Register-Guard on Tuesday, writer Edward Russo filed a report from a city council meeting that will put a measure up for voting as to whether or not to ban MMA from the city.
As I’ve encouraged in past posts on this subject, it’s definitely time for people knowledgeable on MMA to talk to the locally elected officials in the area to persuade them not to integrate this ban. One of the politicians listed in the article is George Poling. You can contact him via e-mail at [email protected] to intelligently state a pro-MMA position (do not write hate mail to the man). Please spread the word about this upcoming ban in Eugene on all the major MMA forums – MMA Fighting, Sherdog, and other boards.

Podcast entries
By Zach Arnold | September 12, 2006
We are accepting guest audio clips to air on the next edition of Fight Opinion Radio. Pick one of the following topics and record a 2-3 minute audio clip about it.
- Your predictions and analysis for the upcoming UFC 63 show.
- Thoughts about the future of PRIDE after their 9/10 Saitama event.
- After the IFL’s successful event in Portland, can this promote become a serious national player?
Audio specifications: 22050 Hz, 16-bit mono for the raw recording. When you encode to MP3, use 48k (preferrably) or 64k. You can use your iPod or a microphone to record the segment and then use Audacity to compile it. Make sure to try to eliminate as much background noise as possible (i.e. don’t record the segment near a computer fan, don’t record it in an area with a lot of people or a lot of traffic, etc.) When you record the segment, post a reply to this article containing a link (or e-mail me the link if you prefer) to where I can download the MP3 audio clip. The best clip or clips will be aired on this week’s show.
During the recording of your audio clip, make sure to state your full name and general location, along with any other information you think would be important to identify yourself (web site, e-mail, etc.). Good luck.

Weekly Fight newspaper collapses
By Zach Arnold | September 11, 2006
Yahoo Japan HP: “Pro-wrestling publication ‘Weekly Fight’ is ended”
By Zach Arnold
Kakutolog (in Japanese) has a shocking post about a media report in regards to the future of Weekly Fight, the weekly newspaper produced by Shin-Osaka Shimbun. The paper is being discontinued as of September 27th, which will apparently be the last issue of the publication. Weekly Fight was one of the most notable of the weeklies in terms of fight coverage on a national scale. It was considered an outlet friendly to K-1, but has been around as a newspaper since 1967.
The reasons listed for the paper being shutdown: Decline in readership, stagnant growth in the newspaper industry, and the fight industry declining rapidly in Japan.
Despite the tabloid nature of the newspaper, it’s a devastating sign of what has been a declining trend for media coverage in Japan of the fight industry. Combine this with all the shake-ups that have happened at Weekly Gong the last few years, and you have a recipe for a complete and total collapse of the Japanese fight media — a media outlet that was literally an institution since the 1960s.

Malice at the Palace Sept 9th results
By Erin | September 10, 2006
Update: On Monday, the California State Athletic Commission claims that one of the fights was fixed. The fighters and promoters involved in the show deny the charges.
Big thanks to the Full Contact Promotions people for haveing me out, especially Jeff and Eric who were increadably nice. For those that are interested in my more detailed report, chck it out at MMA California.
The show took place at the Cow Palace in San Francisco and there was a good sized crowd, about 6,800 from what I have heard. The show started a little late, but not unforgivably so. Plus everyone was still out getting atuographs from Chuck Liddell.
- Nick Theotikos defeated Josh Hancock round 1 via TKO.
- Marco Falcon defeated George Rodriguez round 1 via rear naked choke.
- Alaneder Crispim defeated Gigo Jara round 1 via rear naked choke.
- Moses Baca defeated Dave McMillian via split decision
- Jason Pietz defeated Vincent Perez round 1 via Kimura
- Marlon Sims defeated Sal Guillena round 1 via TKO
- Brian Ebersol defeated Shannon Ritch round 1 via tapou
- Jeremiah Metcalf defeated Jaime Hants round 3 via TKO
- Nam Phan defeated Aric Nelson round 2 via TKO
- Urijah Faber defeated Enoch Wilson Round 2 via cut.
- Jake Shields defeated Steve Berger round 2 via TKO
During the second break (due to missing EMTs) Chuck Liddell, Frank Shamrock and Phil Baroni were all brought into the ring to give breif speaches. While it wasn’t officially announced, Baroni vs Shamrock was strongly hinted at, but no time or promotion was named. I would guess an upcoming Strikeforce show, but that’s purely just speculation.
Overall a good show, damn good considering that this was Full Contact Promotions first one. Their next show will be back at the Cow Palace on January 20th and I would strongly suggest that any MMA fan in the bay area try to make it out to the show.

IFL: Lindland vs. Horn Results
By Mark Pickering | September 10, 2006
In addition to a domestic superfight pitting Olympic silver medalist Matt Lindland against Jeremy Horn, two new teams graced the International Fight League on September 9th at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon (aka The Rose Quarter). The event drew over 5,300 fans. F4W Online has a live show report.
Headliner Lindland ran double-duty, as his debuting Portland-based Wolfpack squad collided with Maurice Smith’s Tigersharks of Seattle, while Bas Rutten’s Anaconda’s (who train in Los Angeles) battled Antonio Inoki’s newcomers, the Tokyo Sabres, from the land of the rising sun. Inoki’s team was coached by Kendo Ka Shin (Tokimitsu Ishizawa) & bodybuilder Ken Yasuda.
