Quote of the Day – Violence

By Zach Arnold | August 22, 2008

Oh dear

But quite frankly, I wonder why more school shootings don’t occur. Given that it is in our nature to be violent, be it war, bullying, gladiators, Ultimate Fighting Championships, and what not, the question I ask is why all the shock and surprise?

Those ‘last days of PRIDE’ feelings are back…

By Zach Arnold | August 22, 2008

That was my first reaction when reading this article. At least PRIDE went out with a bang on their last few shows (except the very last one with Jeff Monson beating Kazuyuki Fujita).

Sengoku 4 this weekend at Saitama Super Arena

By Zach Arnold | August 22, 2008

Amazingly quiet and little press coverage going into this weekend’s big show for World Victory Road. We know that the promotion has a show booked in Yoyogi for late September, but this weekend’s SSA event is critical for the promotion’s long-term financial health. They need to build momentum fast.

  2. Heavyweights: Peter Graham vs. Moise Rimbon (kickboxing/wrestling/Europe Top Team)
  3. Heavyweights: Pawel Natsula vs. Yang Dong-Yi (wrestling)
  4. Lightweight GP: Mizuto Hirota (boxing/judo/sumo) vs. Ryan Schultz
  5. Lightweight GP: Kazunori Yokota (Judo/GRABAKA) vs. Bojan Kosednar (Judo/World Free Fight Challenge)
  6. Lightweight GP: Eiji Mitusoka vs. Rodrigo Damm
  7. Lightweight GP: Satoru Kitaoka vs. Clay French
  8. Middleweights: Makoto Takimoto vs. Frank Trigg
  9. Lightweights: Takanori Gomi vs. Bang Seung-Hwan (Taekwondo/wrestling/boxing, 71 kg)

When a $55 million dollar deficit is a good thing, not a bad thing

By Zach Arnold | August 21, 2008

Pro Elite, in their recent 10Q SEC filing, has admitted that they have accumulated a $55 million dollar deficit over the last two years. This must mean that “… EliteXC is fully functional and fully healthy.”

Wacky GSP fan loses it over BJ Penn

By Zach Arnold | August 21, 2008

Where do these people come from?

My advice would be to beg Georges to just scrape the little Hawaiian version of the “Pillsbury Doughboy” off his shoes and wait until HE feels like fighting the little budha boy on his own terms.

Why do Baby Jay any favors when he makes demands like a spoiled brat?

Well it is time for you to repay your debt of gratitude to the “Canadian who saved Christmas,” and to go one step further (which I always seem want to do). Why not get the small matter of his contract negotiations out of the way?

What better way to show your appreciation than to take a load off the Champion’s shoulders before expecting him to put on what you are hoping will be the show of a lifetime event? You may not have practiced this previously in dealing with your fighters, but what’s fair is fair, so as a sign of good faith lets put signing a desirable contract for Georges before trying to arm-twist him into a December fight with the biggest baby in the UFC.

Jake Shields was right – Noons vs. Diaz probably won’t happen

By Zach Arnold | August 20, 2008

Remember our audio interview with Jake Shields (a great man) a couple of weeks ago? You should listen to it if you haven’t done so, yet. In the interview, Jake predicted that KJ Noons would not fight Nick Diaz and gave several reasons as to why he feels that EXC squashed the momentum of what was building up to be a hot program between the two fighters.

Well, now it appears that there may be good reason for EXC not pushing the Noons/Diaz 2 fight. Fight Hype has an interview online with KJ Noons. In the interview, Noons is quoted as saying, “Boxing is next unless something good comes up.”

Remember, Noons is/was under a two-sport contract with Gary Shaw to do both boxing and MMA.

The one real hot money program that EXC had on its hands is apparently dead?

Steve Cofield gets it right (again)

By Zach Arnold | August 20, 2008

Tito Ortiz as MMA’s version of Barry Bonds? About as good of a sports analogy as you can get right now.

The difference between the two men, however? We still (think we) know that Bonds can swing a baseball bat and do so in a limited role as a DH. Can Ortiz beat anyone that’s considered mid-level competition? Would he beat Babalu? I have my doubts.

Tyson Griffin vs. Sean Sherk at UFC 90

By Zach Arnold | August 20, 2008

October 25th in Chicago. Pick the description that best fits your initial reaction to hearing this news:

a) This will be a really good, exciting, competitive fight.
b) This could be a real snoozefest and lose the audience in a hurry.
c) Tepid reaction… don’t really care either way.

An MMA school you can be proud of?

By Zach Arnold | August 19, 2008

Next week in Denver, Colorado, protesters are expected to cause a scene at the Democrat’s national convention (DNCC) in town. Protesters from the group R-68 (“Recreate ’68”) are openly bragging about getting ‘self-defense training’ at a Denver MMA school called “Gumm Mixed Martial Arts Gym.” The’s school web site is here.

The person behind the school is a fighter named Brad Gumm, who supposedly trains with… Nathan Marquardt.

So, remember all of this when you watch any sort of rowdy protesters next week fighting with the police in Denver. I’m sure Big John McCarthy is really proud of this MMA school.

Maybe MMA Weekly can interview the school’s management and get them to comment on the record about this story.

Two new site partners

By Zach Arnold | August 19, 2008

As you might have noticed, we are welcoming two new site partners on board to Fight Opinion.

First, we want to welcome MMA Prints. It’s an excellent concept, as you can buy photographs for your web site, magazine, or any sort of publication and be able to use them without worrying about copyright issues. Definitely worth checking out.

Second, we are supporters of the new Know Your MMA social networking web site. Somehow, I have a feeling that it isn’t costing them $1.3 million USD to run the site on a yearly basis like a certain MMA company is currently doing. Sign up for a profile on Know Your MMA and let’s build this site up.
