Event: UFC 173 on Saturday, May 24th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada
TV: Fox Sports 1/PPV

We will now see the re-match between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson on August 30th in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Will we see TJ Dillashaw vs. Dominick Cruz next?

Dana White says that Vitor Belfort wasn’t and isn’t a drug cheater.

Next week is the start of UFC double-headers, a beginning of a trend for the promotion in 2014.

I never would have guessed the main event would have gone that way….NEVER.

Co-main event went pretty much how I expected it to…besides the finish.

Enjoyed Lawler and Mizugaki wins too…but Takeya needs to work on his strentgh training before he is ready for a title shot.

Was bummed Kikuno lost…and was KO’d. Guy trains with TK has and has a Black belt in both judo and Kyokushin Karate, but the problem with many karate-ka is that while they can take a punch/strike to the head, they have little or no head movement.

And I also felt bad for Jamie Varner. The guy showed no quit in that first round, but he was smart enough to know after flopping to the ground multiple times like he did, there he would never have won and that he would have done more damage to his leg /foot. Hope Dana gave him a P.O.T.N bonus as well.

“…they have little or no head movement.”

I’ve noticed that. A kind of macho just hit me worldview. They have western boxing in Japan. Why aren’t they competitors at least at lighter weights?

      • Tradition Rules says:

Well, more modern styles of karate DO have an emphasis on avoid being struck, like Ashihara or Enshin or Kudo (Daido Juku) along with being able to absorb strikes.

Problem with certain styles, Kyokushin included, is that on kicks and knees are thrown at the head during conditioning and competitions. It’s full contact,no padding/head gear, to simulate a real fight’s impact, but is LESS realistic in the sense that no fists or elbows are thrown at the head. it makes more sense to wear head gear and some type of glove (like in Daido Juku, which is also called MMA with a Gi), having to avoid arm strikes.

        • rst says:

          So they defend againt kicks.
          Thats interesting.

The way I understand it kicks are the more effective strike,
a stronger limb with more range.

So mostly defending against just that makes sense as long as everybody is on the same page.

  2. rst says:

Lol @ title. Whats up with dana? does he care what the fan media says or not?

So is cormier the next Texiera? Gonna give Jones a test? Its gonna look like Jones/Texiera after Jones Decs Gus.

And I hope Jones hangs around arbitrarily forever in a cleared out division like anderson silva did.

  3. 45 Huddle says:

Now that is a huge upset. The first time in the history of the UFC that a TUF Competitor who did not win the show has become UFC Champion.

  4. 45 Huddle says:

Look at the Overall Men’s Title Picture….

    1) 7 Americans, 1 Brazilian

    2) Of the 7 American Champions, 3 White, 2 Black, & 2 Hispanic. Really a mixture of all backgrounds.

    3) 6 of the champions have a wrestling background. 4 of them competed as Division I wrestlers, and Jones was recruited to but did not.

    4) They have a combined record of 131-11-1. None of them have more then 2 losses. 3 of those 11 losses were in title fights and 1 of them was by DQ where Jones was dominating the fight.

    5) Cain Velasquez is the oldest champion at 31. Jon Jones is the youngest champion at 26. The average age is 28.125. It really is a young man’s sport right now.
