Playing catch-up with (partial) one-liners

By Zach Arnold | October 30, 2012

Print Friendly and PDF

Jon Jones is considering a move to Heavyweight in 2013.

Frankie Edgar vs. Jose Aldo is now set for Super Bowl weekend.

Stephan Bonnar is retiring.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Fabricio Werdum is on the horizon for next Summer after they coach a Brazilian edition of The Ultimate Fighter.

The Ultimate Fighter continues to tank horribly in the ratings in the States.

Rampage Jackson wanted to fight Glover Teixeira, then didn’t want to fight him after Teixeira got a lengthy medical suspension coming out of his Brazil fight… and now may want to fight Teixeira again. I may have more about this debacle later on…

Anthony Pettis vs. Donald Cerrone is still going to happen, with January as the target time frame…

The mess involving the Florida DBPR (Department of Business & Regulation) with the Florida athletic commission is turning out to be a mini-clone of the disastrous situation that California’s athletic commission has turned into thanks to the Department of Consumer Affairs.

Cesar Gracie wants you to know that Nate Diaz will never fight Gilbert Melendez.

There’s little heat for the upcoming Cung Le/Rich Franklin UFC show in Macao (at least in terms of domestic interest) and the heat so far for St. Pierre vs. Condit in Montreal is tepid, though the PPV buys should be relatively decent given that St. Pierre hasn’t fought for a while now.

Karyn Bryant was nominated in the World MMA awards for her journalistic work… maybe she’ll motorboat her way to a win.

    Zing!

Noone’s working harder on the “unsexy” topics than you Zach. Hope good things will continue to come about because of your efforts.

Zuffa is still planning 31 events for 2013 but are not putting on a PPV in January….

Could this be a reduction in PPVs and the start of a fight series to replace TUF in the fall? That would seem like a logical way to still get to 31 events. Especially when they are starting off the year with I think 1 January event…..

    • 45 Huddle says:

Also, Zuffa has completely not learned from 2012. They had a huge problem with injuries ruining events.

So what have they don in 2013 already? Put Jones, Sonnen, Nogueira, & Werdum on the shelf so they can tape these TUF shows. And we all know the longer a fighter is on the shelf, the better chance he has to injure himself for his next fight.

They are so consumed with a failed show that they are letting it ruin their organization.

As for Quinton Jackson…. for a guy who wants out of the UFC so badly, he sure is trying to wait as long as possible to get his last fight on. Doesn’t seem like he really wants to leave.

Bonnar I think was 7-7 in the UFC. I never understood why .500 fighters in the UFC stuck with it so long. The writing is on the wall that they will never get a title shot, and yet they still keep on pushing through more brain damage to try and obtain their goal.

      • Fluyid says:

It’s crazy, 45. Fighters will fight on well beyond their “use by” dates, risking life and well-being, in order to stay in that little bit of limelight. No one thinks that it will happen to him and he’ll end up slurring and slowed. I see it with local-level boxers and I see it with prime time fighters.

Hell, I fought on too long. I can’t even give you a good reason why. There’s this weird mix of ego, stupidity, fear of mortality, stubbornness and much more that goes into it.

      • cutch says:

They will be doing regional fight series soon, fights in Brazil, Asia & Europe, trying to build future stars in those markets. It wont be geared towards Americans but will probably air on Fuel.

I don’t think they are wasting Big Nog & Werdum on TUF at all, 10 million or something were watching the last series a week, if Werdum wins and JDS beats Cain & Overeem, they could do the rematch in a massive stadium down there.

I don’t really like TUF but the Australia Vs UK series has been great, without either coach playing “heel” and a bunch of frat boys fighting each other. So it still has some legs in other countries, they could perhaps cut it down to one series a year in the US.

Used to enjoy this website awhile back. Now I just have a single question:

What motivates you to continue to follow a sport you clearly hate?

    • 45 Huddle says:

Why do you come to a website that you hate so much?

I never got the sense that Mr. Arnold ever hated MMA. I think the sport has had major issues. First with the countless organizations that went out of business. And now with the UFC going off the deep end. But I just dont think he hates the sport.

If anything he has been one of the very few true journalists of this sport between Pride and the AC problems.

      • unhappy_meal says:

I used to enjoy this site’s unique angles on issues… and still do, to an extent.

Descriptions like “horribly”, “debacle” and “maybe she’ll motorboat her way to a win” are expected from tabloids and trolls, not ‘true journalists’. The credibility of some very significant stories coming out of this site would benefit immensely without such unnecessary and spiteful exaggerations.

I also used to enjoy stories that came from Zach the fan… been quite awhile since I saw one of those.

Anyways, just my opinion. It’s your site… do with it what you will.

You sound like a PRIDE fan back when I was covering that scandal. Got any new material?

Not a single point I’ve brought up is inaccurate. The mess in California and Florida for regulating combat sports is a real, legitimate story that effects a lot of people inside the business. Call around to fighters, referees, and officials who have been impacted by bureaucrats and see what they have to say about me after some of the writings I’ve done.

I understand some of the writings have turned people away but it’s also brought in new readers, too, and in many respects I am doing the best I can to report on issues that do have an impact on those who have the most at stake in this industry/sport.

  4. The Judge says:

The sad part is, almost none of this is news…so much stuff that has already been said for days and stuff that doesn’t matter. The only somewhat legitimate news is Nogs vs Verdum and that one is a real shame, the first one will probably never earn another title shot while the latter should be one fight away from #1 contender.

  5. Jonathan says:

This sight has not changed, the sport that it covers/follows did. Zach was the go to man for JMMA…and JMMA died. Then UFC-run MMA started to wither on the vine. It is not Zach’s fault. The sport that I dare say we all fell in love with no longer exists as it once did, and instead we have…. whatever the sport of MMA is today. I know that I went from being the guy with 500 gigabytes of fight videos on his computer to a guy who can barely tell you who the UFC champions are. I don’t know if my love for the sport died with JMMA, but it has changed for me, and I reckon it has changed for the rest of us as well.

Hell, just look at 45 Huddle. We were once diametric opposites, but we were passionate. Now…we’re both “meh” apathetic.

    • 45 Huddle says:

I have 100 DVDs that I just have in a bin. I still have a few best of ones like the Ultimate 100…. but I do not collect anymore. And I remember trying my hardest to get old Shooto and Pancrase events.

Now we have Bellator which is basically unwatchable outside of 5 to 10 fights a year…. and Zuffa running around in circles chasing big money fights and watering down their product beyond belief…..

      • Jonathan says:

Once I had accidentally formatted a HD that had my fight videos on it…I seriously was in shock/tears, but I worked to get them all back and more. but after 3 years of not watching any of them, I cleared that HD out for games and it did not even phase me.

I used to have smoker matches from some ammeter MMA on California indian reservations….I used to have Dutch Superleague kickboxing matches in language I did not understand. I use to have all the Pancrase titles like “Rise” and “Victory” and “NeoBlood”

        • 45 Huddle says:

So we are very much in the same boat of MMA Fandom…. And the sport is now in the cr#pper.

        • edub says:

I have every PRIDE before 2005ish. I have almost every UFC up to 100 through legit DVDs, and pirated ones I got in IRAQ. I used to have a stock pile of “other” matches on an external HD, and my old lap tops (and actually most are probably still there, I just never use them).

If I could sell them all today, I would. If I somehow lost them all or misplaced them, I’m not sure I’d be that upset.

          Maybe it’s just us?

    • Alan Conceicao says:

I’ve been as vocal about MMA having problems as anyone, but they still have a network TV deal, will probably have a 700K+ PPV buyrate pulled in a couple weeks, et al. It hasn’t “withered on the vine”. It just seems a lot of people who were interested in the sport more 7-8 years ago aren’t deep into it right now.

      • 45 Huddle says:

It is very much like Pro Wrestling fans. We watch it out of habit and of what it could potentially be….. We certainly arent watching it out of a real passion for the sport. And the ratings indicate this slowdown.

  6. david m says:

I recently got a Macbook Air, and because Apple blows, I had to get a separate HDMI cable (because my PC HDMI cable doesn’t work on fucking Apple). Anyways, I got it, connected my external 1tb hard drive to my computer, hooked the computer to the tv, and started watching all these old Pride fights. I miss Saku and roided Wanderlei and Mirko and Fedor and the ring and the pure excitement of Pride.

I am still a big UFC fan, don’t get me wrong, but they put on so many events now, and all the fighters seem (for the most part) so cookie cutter, that I just don’t care as much as I once did.

  7. unhappy_meal says:

Not saying that your points are inaccurate. Again I’ll declare that many of these stories are highly significant, groundbreaking and amazing… plenty of juicy stuff no other site is aware of or dares to mention (until you do). Just wouldn’t mind seeing more objective wording in key places. In my opinion you’d find your work referenced more.

And on a purely selfish level, I understand if you’re not interested on recapping stuff that 7638 others now do… but I loved your multi-paragraph post-take on events. Nowadays it’s one snarky headline + results.

Not arguing at all that the sport isn’t on a decline right now, largely due to disappointing decisions by powerful people.

    Cheers 🙂

Anyone have thoughts on the return of DREAM?
