  1. 45 Huddle says:

A lot of decent stuff in the month on June, with nothing that exciting. There really isn’t one fight that gets me super excited. Which isn’t a good sign when they have 4 events. And that PPV is pathetically bad.

    • Jason Harris says:

I’m normally not one to jump on the complaints wagon on events, but that PPV is ridiculous. I am not going to pay PPV price to watch a TUF Finale. Especially of a season of TUF that hasn’t even aired in the US yet!

For the first time in well over a year we’re probably going to go watch that at a bar or something.

However, bring on the free fights on FX. I have a DVR for a reason, if I can’t be home to watch them I’m always excited to have new stuff to watch when I am home. More free fights is always a good thing.

  2. King Famous says:

the ufc did a good job of taking other brand’s stars and making them their own. it will be hard for them to create stars since they do not want any names to be bigger than their own.
only fight i’m looking forward to is hendo/jones

  3. Kyle says:

Zach, have you considered giving each event its own post? The May event post is up to 130 comments and counting; that’s a lot to scroll through to get to the latest updates on fight night.

Ed. — I used to do individual posts. The problem I found is that it became too cluttered and didn’t draw as well. If there’s a tip or a solution on how to re-work what I’m currently doing, alert me. I am completely open to change here.

    • ttt says:

maybe you can have UFC PPV events on their own thread
and lump the smaller events on a monthly basis

  4. david m says:

Did I read that right? Is Mike Russow in a co-main event of a UFC ppv? What a joke.

    • Chuck says:

Russow is on a winning streak, and he is going against Fabricio Werdum (who’s more of a star attraction). Plus, I doubt the card is finished. Just because a fight is second-last (thus far) that doesn’t mean it’s a co-main event.

  5. Megatherium says:

The Brazil show has regressed all the way from outdoor stadium mega event to bowl of crap.

    Amazes even me.

  6. 45 Huddle says:

Lesnar/Cena WWE PPV Main Event did 251,000 Buys. And that is throughout the world. It only did 147,000 in North America.

I guess Lesnar’s PPV Power doesn’t translate back well to the WWE these days.

Ed. — It’s not a Lesnar issue. Rock’s first deal at Survivor Series was not great, either. WWE PPV drawing power outside of Wrestlemania is fried like a bucket of chicken.

  7. […] A Look at the UFC Schedule in June (FightOpinion.com) […]

  8. edub says:

Zach Junkie has the catch-weight of Franklin-Silva at 190.

  9. The Judge says:

Ugh. The finale isn’t bad but all the other cards have only one match-up that has relevance to the issue of who the best fighter in the division is. And in one case, it’s a flyweight. Just ugh.

  10. Megatherium says:

UFC has signed Brazilian prospect Wagner Prado to fight Phil Davis in August. An undefeated Team Noguiera LHW, Prado will be in tough against Davis in his UFC debut. Prado replaces the injured Chad Griggs at the August Fox 4 event.

All this according to Portal do Vale Tudo and Tatame.

  11. 45 Huddle says:

I have never been a big fan of Loretta Hunt as a MMA Journalist…. But she has hit an all-time low.

She went digging for who was in the car with Jon Jones during his car accident.

That’s TMZ level sh!t. She was obviously trying to bring up dirt on the guy. Let his private life stay private.

Perhaps Dana White was right when he called her that certain name….

    • edub says:

Did she ever get found to be at fault in that whole SHerdog stealing content mess?

    • david m says:

How dare that journalist do investigative reporting?! Were you mad at Bob Woodward for breaking the Watergate scandal?

Jon Jones has no right to privacy; when you become famous, your personal life is no longer out of bounds; the public wants to know. It was his fault, and blaming a journalist for investigating something salacious is almost as dumb as you accusing Vitor of intentionally breaking his hand.

      • Steve4192 says:

I agree that Loretta did nothing wrong in investigating the details of Jones DUI. I also agree that Jones, as a public figure, gave up a certain amount of his privacy.

That said, I do not think Loretta should have published the names of the passengers in the car. They are not public figures and to the best of my knowledge committed no crime.

        • edub says:

Just to play a little devil’s advocate: If somebody that is a public figure (which seems to carry a wide range of meaning), do the people that associate with that person lose privacy themselves?

      • edub says:

“Jon Jones has no right to privacy;”

That’s bullshit and a copout from the media today. Just because certain people become famous does not mean they do not have a right to privacy. Its garbage, pure and simple.

I’m all for people breaking stories, but lets not compare Loretta Hunt to the guy who broke one of the most important news stories of the past century. She reported the details of the DUI, by a professional fighter.

        • david m says:

Edub: JJ is a public figure, so of course there is interest about the accident. Were you appalled when the names of Tiger’s mistresses were published? When you hang with celebrities (especially in non-Kosher circumstances), you have to know you are opening yourself up to interest from the public.

45 Huddle (he who believes that Vitor intentionally broke his hand to not fight Wanderlei) literally called Loretta a muckraker for reporting on JJ’s drunk driving escapades. It makes sense given how much he loves/backs Zuffa on everything that he would have his panties in a bunch over the corporate champ being reported as a scumbag. Jon Jones is a married, faux-pious man, and the two floozies he was with knew he was married, and were still out drinking (and it is fair to assume doing other things) with him while his wife was at home.

45: to suggest a car crash with the most dominant fighter in the history of the LHW division is not related to mma is the second dumbest thing you have said this week behind your Vitor comment; kudos on staying consistently bad; your ability to lie to yourself and ignore all logic is astounding.

        • edub says:

No not appalled. I don’t agree with it either though. This thought that because somebody becomes famous and hires a publicist that their personal lives are open to the public is just something I don’t believe in. I don’t think it’s fair from a personal rights stand point, and I don’t believe its good for our society.

“When you hang with celebrities (especially in non-Kosher circumstances), you have to know you are opening yourself up to interest from the public.”

And that’s why I asked the question. Certain folks have made points on this stage that it’s wrong for the women’s names to be released. However, I think if we acquiesce to the idea that all celebrities lives are public knowledge I don’t think that the people who hang out with them get a free pass.

      • 45 Huddle says:

She is a MMA Journalist. What does a Jon Jones car passenger have to do with MMA? Absolutely nothing. This was muck racking.

        • The Gaijin says:

I dunno – a guy that is held out as one of the faces and future stars of the company, that preaches a holier than thou Christian attitude and builds a persona/public face as a clean-cut role model should and should expect to be held up to face SOME sort of standard if they want to benefit from this public image they carefully craft.

I mean, what did a bunch of cocktail waitresses have to do with golf? Absolutely nothing. That was muck racking.

Mainstream sport. Mainstream coverage. DEAL. WITH. IT.

      • fd2 says:

“Jon Jones was involved in a drunk-driving accident with two women who were not his wife.”

That’s perfectly reasonable to report. It’s public record, it’s relevant to the man’s image, it provides context to the crime he committed.

Reporting the names of the women involved (unless they, themselves, are mma or otherwise public personalities, which does not seem to be the case) is not reasonable in the slightest. It is not relevant to the man’s image, it does not provide any additional context to the crime, and even if you accept the idea that Jones by becoming a public figure has forfeited his right to privacy, those two women have not.

  12. Megatherium says:

Jones got himself liquored up and drove his car into a telephone pole. Of course he is going to come under some public scrutiny, and so he should.

Why are people here whining about this?

  13. Megatherium says:

Just wanted to say that when a sports star gets liquored up and runs his car into a telephone pole, that’s news.

    Period.

  14. 45 Huddle says:

I am surprised Kampmann won. At first I thought it was a horrible stoppage, but Ellenberger was not fighting back.

Kampmann has now beaten Story, Alves, & Ellenberger. He also lost a decision before that to Sanchez which some people thought he won. The winner of Hendricks/Kampmann certainly deserves the winner of GSP/Condit.

    • edub says:

I’d rather see Kampman – Condit 2 first. However, it’s not going to happen.

      • 45 Huddle says:

Yeah, no way of that happening. Condit is going to sit this one out for as long as he has to. Then he will be taken down for 5 straight rounds and lose a decision to GSP.

        • edub says:

Yep. Wouldn’t it be nice if GSP finally moved up. I’m all for people staying where there comfortable, but he’s openly talked about moving up (especially after this injury). I say lets finally see it.

Fuck it, let him get on TRT to do so.

  15. Megatherium says:

That female referee botched another one. That women is a danger to the fighters. John Albert should appeal that nonsense.

    • fd says:

Every rule meeting I’ve ever been to, they tell you specifically that if you yell or make any kind of verbalization while in a submission, the ref will stop it. Albert said himself that he was starting to yell.

    • edub says:

Technically, she was airing on the side of caution so she was being less dangerous than stopping it too late.

However, the thought process behind somebody yelling being a tap isn’t correct IMO. It’s something that could be changed to telling the fighters in meetings “If you are caught with no way of tapping, you must say the words TAP, UNCLE, or SUBMIT” or something along those lines. Bring in foreign fighters translators to make sure they know these words clearly. Fighters yell every once in a while, and a lot of the time it is not admitting defeat. It’s time to stop pretending that its a valid way of enforcing the rule.

      • Chuck says:

Yelling while in a submission hold is absolutely a verbal submission. It’s in the rules. Go to a BJJ or judo dojo and ask them yourself. 9 out of every ten (if not 10 out of every 10) bjj or judo brown or black belt will tell you yelling is a verbal submission. It’s in the rules for Sambo, Judo, BJJ, Pancration, MMA, NAGA, etc. It’s the same everywhere.

Sure, there are times when a fighter yells he/she isn’t doing it to submit, but again, it is considered a verbal submission.

        • EJ says:

It might be right according to the rules but unless a guy is clearly screaming “tap”. IMO a ref. should never step in because it leads to situations like last night and others in the past. At this point everyone knows how to tap to a submission, so unless a guy actually taps out don’t step in.

        • edub says:

This is a fight though. Not a grappling match. The main thought behind the “Scream tap” in those circumstances is airing on the side of caution for the competitor.

At the top level of MMA, fighters would gladly gut through a torturous moment or two even with the possibility of a limb snapping. Just because it is grappling doesn’t mean rules from grappling should be used.

  16. Jonathan says:

I have only heard of three people who were on the TUF finale. The two in the main event and Jonathan Brookins. Does this make me a bad MMA fan?

    • BuddyRowe says:

Yes. Charles “Do Bronx” Oliviera is an amazing young fighter and you should know him.

      • Jonathan says:

I have heard of him. Must have missed his name on the fight card. Make that four fighters.

        • BuddyRowe says:

Well the main TV card was 3 fights. The 4 fighters that you knew and then other 2 were the TUF finalists who have had a whole season of TV promoting them.

        • Jonathan says:

Then I am probably just a bad MMA fan now.

  17. Jonathan says:

    The DREAM has died.

Though it was more like a Nightmare.

  18. CapnHulk says:

EA just snagged the UFC license. No gameplay shown at E3 so far, but Dana White seemed excited.

Good move overall, I think. Yuke’s wasn’t cutting it anymore in terms of gameplay and polish, and THQ’s financial woes are probably what set this whole thing into motion anyway.

    • 45 Huddle says:

EA MMA had some shining moments, but there were some fatal flaws in the gameplay that made it nearly impossible to play. UFC Undisputed 3 was far superior.

However, with the new license for EA, they are going to be putting a better team on the game, and I am sure it will be very good long term. Probably much better then anything tHQ could do long term.

      • Zheroen says:

Please, elaborate on these fatal flaws of EA MMA, as well as what elements made UFC Undisputed 3 far superior. Was it the UFC logo on the cover?

        • The Gaijin says:

Go back and look at what he said about EA/THQ 18 months ago as opposed to what he’s saying now…and then bang your head on the wall because it will be about as fruitful.

        • 45 Huddle says:

          http://www.fightopinion.com/2012/04/20/bellator-march-cards/

Check the 3rd comment down where I posted a link from MMA Junkie about another MMA game. I was making fun of another MMA game by comparing it to EA MMA.

Sorry The Gaijin. You are wrong.

The fatal flaw is that you barely push a button and you lose a lot of endurance. You worry more about not pushing buttons then you do about fighting.

There are elements to the game that are fantastic. But a lot of those elements ended up in UFC 3 anyways.

I have faith that EA with eventually make a good game. But as EA MMA stands right now, it is not playable.

  19. liger05 says:

THQ were right to dump ufc. Nobody buys ufc games anymore.

  20. 45 Huddle says:

Mr. Arnold asked if UFC 146 would do over/under of 400,000 PPV Buys. Most people said between 400,000 and 500,000.

    I said 600,000. It did between 560,000 & 580,000 PPV Buys.

That is a very solid PPV number for a main event with a very predictable outcome.

PPV Business for the UFC seems to be decent at this point. It is not breaking records but the better main events are holding their own.

It seems the only problem with the UFC right now if the FOX part of the deal. Not the money element. The ratings element. Something just isn’t working right.

  21. Jonathan says:

Could the UFC perhaps be a victim of its’ own success?

It is so hard to follow ALL of the things that are on TV/PPV now…especially when you compare that to the time when there were only 6 PPV a year.

  22. edub says:

Matt Mitrione just tweeted about downloading a stream to the Pac Bradley fight. Am I the only one who sees an opening for bob Arum against dana here? Zuffa crusading against illegal streams yet their fighters are using them for other PPV events.

    • Chuck says:

Can’t blame Zuffa for one of their fighters being a dumbass.

BTW, Great fight, great night of fights (especially Randall Bailey’s spectacular come from behind KO over Mike Jones) but Pacquiao definitely won that fight. Tim Bradley won via Split Decision. All three judges had it 115-113 for either fighter. Harold Lederman AND Dan Rafeal (unofficial scorers) both had it 119-109 (11 rounds to one) for Pacman. I probably had it, like, 117-111 Pacquiao. Quite a few close rounds (especially the last three rounds).

  23. PizzaChef says:

Check out Dana White’s twitter after the Pacquiao fight. Not smart for him to be bashing the Nevada State Athletic Commission, considering they willingly turn a blind eye to the TRT usage.

I wonder how many times that commission saved Dana’s ass before.

    • EJ says:

That commission hasn’t saved Dana’s ass on anything did you forget the Sonnen debacle?. Dana is just saying the truth, but after JMM was robbed three times against Pacman i’ll chop this up to karma finally catching up to Manny.

  24. Zheroen says:

People are supposed to pay regular price for a card where even a relatively well-educated MMA fan might recognize 4 names on the main card, at best. Nice.

  25. david m says:

What does it mean that I am more interested in the FX card (but still probably not interested enough to watch–DVR to the rescue!) than the “ppv” card, which will draw 11 buys?

btw this marks the first time I will ever cheer for Gray Maynard, because I fundamentally oppose that skill-less caveman baboon being in a main event or basically ever being on my screen.

    • 45 Huddle says:

But you are interested enough in the FX card to make an internet post about it.

      • david m says:

Do you not see a difference between an internet post which took 30 seconds to write and watching tv for 2-3 hours?

        • 45 Huddle says:

Do you see how your comments make it seem like you do care?

        • david m says:

I don’t understand your confusion here; I said I will DVR it and that I am more interested in that card than the ppv. I will fast forward all the fights and then watch the main event the next day. For the ppv I will just read the results online.

        • edub says:

Don’t watch it dude. It’s terrible.

        • david m says:

edub: fear not, I didn’t end up DVR’ing it because Guida is so boring and lacking in skills that I couldn’t justify it.

  26. The Judge says:

And now I seem to be succeeding at:
    http://kaban.tv/rossiya-2-online
This is a translation of what’s airing live on Rossiya 2 (Russia 2), the channel that’s airing the fight live on free TV in Russia. You know, like Strikeforce on CBS 🙂

  27. Megatherium says:

Those odds can’t be right for the Hacran Dias/Yuri Alcantara fight can they? Alcantara a 14-5 favorite?

It’s a really intriguing matchup-I have no idea who will win but I’m taking more of a liking to Dias after reading this!

  28. Jerome says:

Hey, anybody watching the Battle of Atlanta on UNATION tomorrow?

  29. Jonathan says:

The way that Clay Guida fought that fight was bad for MMA. It would not surprise me if Dana White cut him. It was just a shade better then Kalib Starnes. I cannot believe that one judge gave it to Guida.

    • 45 Huddle says:

I cannot believe any judge gave it to Gray Maynard. Based on the criteria, Guida easily won.

I’m not complaining. Guida ran and I don’t ever want to see that awarded. But he won within the rules.

      • Jonathan says:

I base my decision on Octagon control (mostly) and then from there better effective striking and close submission attempts. Also, you could throw “willingness to fight” in there. Guida should have been warned for his timidness earlier in the fight.

      • edub says:

Exactly Jonathon. I based it on the same thing. I gave Maynard the last three rounds.

      • klown says:

I had at least 3 rounds for Guida.

Maynard’s only move was grabbing Guida’s hair. He did it to land his knees, he did it when Guida was on top of him to land elbows, and he did it while trying the guillotine. It’s obviously Guida’s fault for having long hair, but I am thoroughly unimpressed with Maynard.

Guida landed more shots and better shots. The fight was fought on his terms. He avoided Maynard’s right hand and stuffed his takedowns. As frustrating as Guida’s style was, he won that fight.

        • edub says:

          http://hosteddb.fightmetric.com/fights/index/3930

“Maynard’s only move was grabbing Guida’s hair. He did it to land his knees, he did it when Guida was on top of him to land elbows, and he did it while trying the guillotine. It’s obviously Guida’s fault for having long hair, but I am thoroughly unimpressed with Maynard.”

You missed most of the times where Maynard cracked him hard, and Clay immediately starting jumping around then.

“Guida landed more shots and better shots. The fight was fought on his terms. He avoided Maynard’s right hand and stuffed his takedowns. As frustrating as Guida’s style was, he won that fight.”

Guida didn’t land more shots, check the stats. And he most certainly didn’t land the better shots. He landed two good kicks followed by decent combinations, the rest were fainting jabs. Maynard landed hard in both the clinch, and on the outside the few times he was able to find him.

  30. 45 Huddle says:

I am very disappointed in the UFC commentators today. Both the FX and the FuelTV crew. Guida ran for the entire fight. It was a HORRIBLE performance. And yet not one person has called Guida out on it. Not one. Not Florian. Not Evans. Not Munoz. Not Glazier. Not Anik.

They all tried to sugar coat it. Such garbage.

    • Tomer says:

I did like Dan Miragliotta pulling aside Guida towards the end when he was literally running away, threatening to deduct points for timidity.

  31. 45 Huddle says:

I know some people won’t want to see it, but if Edgar wins the belt back and defends it once…. And Maynard continues to win…. Then Maynard/Edgar 4 does make logical sense. They are 1-1-1 against each other. A 4th fight would really be the decider on that saga….

With that said, I don’t see Edgar beating Henderson.

  32. edub says:

I think Clay is in serious denial about the way he fought. He says he sees no problem with it in the press conference.

  33. EJ says:

Man I don’t even know where to begin with tonights beyond frustrating Main Event between Guida and Maynard. I guess i’ll start with the obvious yeah Guida got jobbed again this is by my count the 4th time in the UFC he’s gotten screwed over by idiot judges.

But what bothers me even more is the moronic gameplan that Jackson came up with him tonight. Clay Guida has the most takedowns of a LW in UFC history and he doesn’t use his wrestling for 5 rounds. What the hell was that?, I get using the initial gameplan to piss off Gray for a couple of rounds.

But in the last 2 it should have been classic Guida not what we got, so i’m just left more shocked and angry than I have been all year after tonight thanks to that crap.

    • Zach Arnold says:

All you need to know is that Greg Jackson and Kalib Starnes were trending on Twitter tonight. Dan Hardy absolutely buried Greg.

    • edub says:

He didn’t get jobbed dude. His gameplan, and his idea to keep running for the last three rounds jobbed himself.

      • EJ says:

I hated the gameplan as much as everyone else, but Guida still won the fight Maynard could do nothing and how he won 3 rounds on anyones card is baffling.

That wasn’t the only baffling decision of the night, I have no idea how Stout won 30-27 over Fisher. Or how Lamas beat Hioki, tonight the judges were pathetic even more pathetic than whatever the hell Jackson’s gameplan was for Guida and that’s says alot to me.

        • Jonathan says:

Octagon control, willingness to fight, more effective striking, and close submission attempts.

        • Chuck says:

“how he won 3 rounds on anyones card is baffling.”

The first round was close, Guida might have won it. Guida absolutely won rounds 2 and 3, and Maynard absolutely won rounds 4 and 5. All depended on how you scored the first round. I had no problem with Guida getting jobbed.

Personally, I had Lamas beating Hioki 29-28. He won rounds two and three.

        • klown says:

Jonathan, how are you defining Octagon control?

Guida dictated the pace and place of the fight.

        • edub says:

Running around and getting a warning about stalling from the ref is dictating the pace of the fight? I guess kalib Starnes was beating Nate Quarry when they fought.

The first round was really close. Clay won the second. I had Gray winning 3-5. So did Junkie, so did MMA fighting. Sherdog gave Clay the third.

It appeared to be all about how the third was scored, and according to fight metric Gray outlanded him 9-4 in the round. Adding that in with the fact that clay was literally running around in circles for half of the round, and Gray should be the clear winner IMO. That gives him 3 rounds easily.

        • EJ says:

After watching the fight again, the decision becomes even more baffling. First off the first round wasn’t close Maynard did zero, he only did slightly more in the second. The third he did better but still wasn’t enough, the fourth you could give to him only if you think that value submissions that don’t do anything.

And the fifth you can put in his column again that decision was as bad as i’ve ever seen. Which makes it that harder to be angry at Guida and Jackson for that ridiculous gameplan when the Judges blew 3 fights in one night.

Maynard did nothing? Guida threw 8 more strikes in the round and he only landed 5 more. They were all as he was moving too. It wasn’t some blow out at all, it was a close round that I and everyone else pretty much scored for Guida.

The fifth you most certainly can’t put in his column. He got warned by the ref, out-struck 17-11, and taken to the ground (although briefly). He did stagger Gray in the round, but Gray absolutely rocked Clay up against the fence.

4 and 5 were Gray in almost every category, and they have been universally scored that way around the net too.

        • EJ says:

Yeah Maynard did nothing in the first, that is obvious to anyone with working eyes whether it was a blow out or not is irrelevant. And the fifth I put in Gray’s column not Clays like I said maybe you can reach and put the fourth there too. But there is no way Gray won a third round unless it was a scoring error, which is why again i’m shocked at how bad this decision was.

        • edub says:

So you have no actual base argument for saying those things, just hyperbole like “anyone with working eyes” and “it had to be a scoring error”. Like I said the stats point to actual reality here. Clay only threw 8 more strikes in the first round, and was out landed in the third. Gray easily takes 3-5.

Side note: Travis Wiuff might be the biggest LHW in the world.

    • Tomer says:

And he still has to win a LHW tournament despite beating the champ in a non-title fight – hilarious.

  35. The Gaijin says:

This new fighting style of Clay Guida is frigging pathetic…what a joke. It’s a fight not a gymnastics event, if he hadn’t been in so many previous FOTN he should be cut for that pathetic “performance”.

Thank god the judges were competent for once.

Just turned on the prelims. Looks like they finally figured out the logo issue. And when I say logo issue…. I mean a graphic in each corner of the screen. Annoying. Now they have a red ticker bar at the bottom with the PPV Countdown and the UFC on FX logo. PERFECT!! Personally I prefer a clear screen, but I know that is not realistic.

This is a much better solution then what they were previously doing which was making it hard to watch the fights.

Why is anyone surprised by Guida’s terrible style? I have been telling you people for years that he is an incredibly boring fighter with mediocre (at best) skills. Anyone who saw him hump his way to “victory” against Mac Danzig or Nate Diaz knows he is a talentless hack whose strategy consists of avoiding fighting at all costs.

    • edub says:

This was an all-time low for him though man. It’s like he saw how Carlos Condit fought, and tried to mimic him. However, what he (and apparently Jackson) didn’t realize is it takes a talented kickboxer to pull off that type of gameplan. Clay Guida is definitely not that.

This wasn’t him roughing up people from the top or grinding an opponent using top control. It was a fight that literally had me questioning how badly I wanted to keep following this sport. If Clay would have won I might have stayed away from MMA for quite some time.

      • david m says:

Yeah I feel you on that. I still actually haven’t been able to bring myself to watch Condit run his way to victory vs Diaz, in part because that decision is ruinous for what mma is supposed to be, namely 2 guys fighting. In a world where someone can avoid engaging for 5 rounds and claim victory over the true embodiment of what a mma fighter should be, it is hard not to be jaded. Again, like I said, I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch that fight (I was out of the country when it happened), and I know some people will say I shouldn’t comment on the fight, but I have heard enough people tell me that Condit basically avoided engaging, mixing in some leg kicks.

Watching Nick Diaz fight is one of the true joys for mma fans. To see him lose like that to a good but not great kickboxer who was terrified of engaging, is just sad. Not to mention that the Condit running man strategy caused Nick to retire and robbed us one of the only fights that anyone really cares about, GSP v Diaz. Carlos Condit is not the champion in the eyes of anyone, and he will be absolutely plundered by GSP.

The running man strategy is a plague on mma, like lay n pray or wall n stall. This isn’t boxing, so there are no corners for a fighter to be trapped in (another reason Pride ruled). MMA is becoming more about stealing rounds without having to engage than about winning fights, and Lay Guida is an example of that. To me, running away is the same thing as wall n stall (another Guida “tactic”) or lay n pray. All basically come down to the fact that you aren’t confident enough in your abilities to fight, so you just try to avoid any fire fights as long as possible and try to hump your way to a win. Sad. Glad he lost; I hope he is in the XFC next week.

        • Kalle says:

There’s more to striking than “stand in front of Nick Diaz because that’s the only way he knows how to win”.

Condit wasn’t running. He got in his shots, moved out of range, and repeated. Nick couldn’t deal with it which is why he lost. And when I say he couldn’t deal with it I mean that Condit hurt Nick more than Nick hurt Condit.

Comparisons to Guida are just dumb, even the judges managed to see Guida’s lack of offense for what it was.

        • David M says:

Kalle: sigh, I think you have inspired me to watch the fight

    • Managua says:

      FOTN 5 times
      FOTY 2 times
      SOTN 2 times

He is not boring and has more energy/stamina than anyone in the UFC. It’s too bad Greg Jackson to ruin him.

      • david m says:

Clay Guida is horribly boring; I can’t think of anyone else who has such a high likelihood to take a shit on a plate and call it a fight. The fact that he has had exciting performances has more to do with his opponents than with his own ability.

      • The Gaijin says:

Isn’t Guida something like 1-5 in his FOTN’s? He’s usually in “exciting fights” when he’s getting the crap kicked out of him…maybe that says something about his new style?

  38. 45 Huddle says:

If Chael Sonnen beats Anderson Silva, I would love to see Sonnen/Franklin for the belt. Does Franklin really deserve a shot? Probably not. But it would give the division time to get a more clear cut #1 contender. And it would be a great story of the older legends one last chance at glory.

And on the same card, they can do a legit #1 contenders fight with any of the following guys…. Bisping, Belcher, Boetsch/Lombard, & Munoz/Weidman. And of those 6 guys would be worthy of a title shot, they just need an extra win or 2 to really make it a marketable fight.

    • edub says:

As a huge Franklin homer I would love this. You’re right he doesn’t and wouldn’t deserve it if he got it, but it would be a great story.

I could actually see Sonnen smack talking Franklin enough into the UFC taking that fight.

This all hinges on Anderson losing though.
