Juicy new fight odds for big name UFC Summer fights

By Zach Arnold | April 16, 2012

Print Friendly and PDF

Gray Maynard -285 vs. Clay Guida +215

Rich Franklin -325 vs. Cung Le +255

Michael Bisping -315 vs. Tim Boetsch +245

Forrest Griffin -295 vs. Tito Ortiz +225

***

The inimitable Jon Luther & myself appeared on Nick Kalika’s show to talk about the odds for these fights and why we picked the fights we did. (Jon and I agree on two of them and disagree on two, as well.)

Which of these four fights intrigues you the most?

  1. 45 Huddle says:

Tim Boetsch will beat Michael Bisping. And Forrest Griffin is so shot that it wouldn’t shock me if Tito Ortiz won.

  2. Mike Lewis says:

Tim Boetsch has as much chance of beating Bisping as I do of beating Jon Jones. Zero

    • Jonathan says:

You cannot discount the puncher’s chance that Tim has @ 185, especially against someone with a less-than-stellar beard like Bisping.

I think Bisping will win, but this might, more so than others, is just one punch away from ending in darkness for Michael Bisping.

    • 45 Huddle says:

Michael Bisping has lost 4 times in his career. Lets also include his “win” over Matt Hamill into this discussion.

Of those 5 fights, 4 of them were against physically stronger fighters with a wrestling background. Michael Bisping constantly gets outmuscles in fights. He just doesn’t have the natural strength to back these guys down and implement his striking game.

I think it is a rather clear cut victory for Tim Boetsch. But I could be wrong.

      • Mike Lewis says:

Ok well if your going to include his “win” against Matt Hamill then lets also include his “losses” to Rashad Evans and Chael Sonnen. I had him winning both of these fights as did many other people and I saw no evidence of Sonnen out muscling Bisping at all – in the first 2 rounds Bisping controlled him completely.

        • 45 Huddle says:

The consensus is that he lost all 3 of those fights.

And you need to watch the Sonnen fight again. His legs were not strong enough to circle away from Sonnen and avoid the cage.

And you can argue the nitty gritty of all of his fights, but the fights he has lost or that people thought he lost (Hamill), all are against the same type of fighter. A strong fighter with a wrestling background. Henderson, Sonnen, Evans, & Hamill.

Boetsch is a better version of a Matt Hamill.

        • cutch says:

Sonnen even said he thought he lost the first twoo rounds.

Boetsch was easily getting picked apart on his feet in the first two rounds against Okami, I see no reason why Bisping can’t do it against him for 3 rounds.

        • edub says:

Just a side note, but the consensus on the Bisping-Hamill fight is not that he lost. There are plenty of opinions everywhere on the internet that Bisping won (on top of the ones that he lost). I know I thought he lost when I first watched it, but definitely think he edged the last two rounds after watching it again. Hamill didn’t do enough to win after the first round.

The other two is yes the consensus is easily he lost, especially the Rashad fight.

I doubt Boestch beats Bisping however. Boestch doesn’t have the takedowns of Chael or Rashad, or the overall striking of Henderson. He also was just outwrestled himself by Okami before exploding in the third, and Bisping has very good takedowns himself.

  3. Mike Lewis says:

Where does the myth about Bisping’s chin come from? He has been knocked out once from a punch that would knock out an elephant. Other than that he has never been finished and has taken shots from Silva, Evans, Leben, Akiyama, Rivera etc. I would say thats a pretty good chin.

  4. Kelvin Hunt says:

    -Bisping picks Boetsch apart easily…

-Griffin is pretty shot as a fighter…but he should beat Ortiz…although it’ll be closer than it should be.

-Franklin should not be that big of a favorite over Le IMO…coming off surgery…long layoff…Le should be in better shape(cardio) than he was against Wandy…Franklin will probably win though.

-Maynard is going to wreck Guida

  5. EJ says:

Bisping, Franklin and Forrest should all win and thus all be favored, but Guida once again is going to play spoiler. Maynard has become so overated it’s insane, in a 5 round fight Guida is going to expose him and get right back into contention.

    • edub says:

Guida’s only shot against Gray is Maynard blowing his load beating him up, and taking him down repeatedly. Other than that Maynard has every advantage in MMA.

  6. bluerosekiller says:

Now, I’ve never been much of a Bisping fan, but that being said, I believe he’s a much better fighter than a lot of folks give him credit for. He’s underrated as hell IMO.
Not that I envision him taking the strap off of Anderson Silva anytime soon, but I do think he’d be a lot more competitive than most would think.
Hell, while J2S & Frankie Edgar get all the credit, I think Bisping is right up there close to them as far as pure boxing skills are concerned. The guys DEFINITELY got hands.
And, while he doesn’t have great power, he hits harder than most give him credit for & as perfectly illustrated by his stoppage of Mayhem Miller, his shots can do a lot of accumulative damage that allows him to finish opponents off.

While Boetch is on a helluva good roll & can’t be overlooked, I see a motivated Bisping winning their scrap.

  7. Boetsch only has a puncher’s chance and the odds accurately reflect that. Look, guys, I’ve hated Bisping and denied his capabilities for some time, but even I have to admit the guy’s a legit Top 5 middleweight. I don’t think Boetsch is anywhere near that and he’ll be vastly out-skilled in this encounter. Of course he could knock out Bisping, but Bisping would have to be completely stupid to let that happen.

I think people have misread Clay Guida’s ascent and Gray Maynards. Guida has finally evolved to the point of consistently good; Maynard has evolved to the point of being one of the best Lightweights in the world. There isn’t a chasm between them, but there is a disparity.

With those odds and given their opponents, I would put money on Ortiz and Le in a heartbeat.

    • RST says:

“I would put money on Ortiz and Le in a heartbeat.”

That sounds like the smart move if your a gambler.

  8. RST says:

Those all look about right, as far as who should be favored at least. No odds that look terribly odd, but toto might have a better chance than that.

As far as intriguing, I’ll put them in order from most to least:

    Bisping/Boetsch

    Franklin/Le

    Maynard/Guida

    Forrest/toto

Maynard/guida is a better fight than Franklin/le IMO, but I’m just not that into lightweights so I’m more interested in the two lesser but recognizable 185’s.
