This will really test the mantra of “If it is not the UFC, then it does not matter”
I thought Salaverry was retired? Guess “retiring” means as much in mma as it does in pro wrasslin’.
Kong – Ninja fight should be some decent fireworks. I’d think if Watson had to take Reid 5 rds Rua will take him out, but I’m just not sure what to expect out of Rua these days…fights way too wide open.
It’s really too bad Ninja’s fallen off pretty far from his heydays in PRIDE (strong arguments that he actually beat Hendo, Arona and Rampage too). The guy rarely had a boring fight and was the epitomy of the nasty Chute Boxe style in the late 90s-early 2000s. I guess I shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that though he’s only 31 he’s been fighting professionally for over a decade now.
Evans/Phil Davis is headlining the show in August. Either they couldn’t put a title fight together or that won’t be the main event. I’m surprised they couldn’t get either a Lw or FW title fight for this event.
This is going to be a big letdown for the summer for the UFC. They have failed to really get the key fights signed. They allowed Jones to play games. The champions and stars either don’t seem in a hurry to fight or the UFC delays fights through TUF long enough for the fighters to get injured.
They need to rethink their strategy a little bit. And start putting pressure on the stars to step up when needed.
Having 2 PPV’s in August doesn’t help either.
My hope is that a new TV deal will bring along some sort of Network TV deal that will reduce the number of PPV’s slightly. A boy can dream.
Couple of guys worth watching the prelims for:
Leonardo Santos – tapped GSP in a minute in a grappling match.
Leigh ‘The Boom’ Cohoon – up and coming UK slugger, tons of heart, very exciting.
Might not be UFC 100 in terms of ‘star power’ but some very interesting fights top to bottom none the less.
Spoke to Ninja at the presser yesterday, he seemed very focused and serious about the fight. Said he’s actually considering moving to England to teach/train. He also made a point, as did his manager Eduardo, to heap a lot of praise on the UFC, (hint, hint).
Interesting, he mentioned an ‘issue’ with his training/camp. Wouldn’t elaborate or confirm if it was an injury or some kind of distraction as he ‘didn’t want to make excuses’.
