Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone’s homophobic slur and death wishes for Jamie Varner

By Zach Arnold | September 14, 2010

Print Friendly and PDF

Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner are set to fight on the September 30th WEC card.

You can tell when a radio appearance goes horribly wrong PR-wise when you are apologizing like Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone did a couple of hours after appearing on Monday night’s Tapout radio show.

Kind of like this:

@TapouTWorldWide I don’t really wish death on anyone!! Just got caught up in talking s***! My apologies @jamievarner! Took it to far

There’s just one problem with that apology — we listened to the interview and transcribed some of his comments about Jamie Varner. Not taken out of context and we give them to you in full context. I didn’t censor the language that he used in his comments, so you’ve been warned. Full-page mode gets you the quotes.

The time cues of the quotes pulled: 3:00 to 4:15, 10:50 to 11:35, 12:40 to 14:10. There’s plenty of more that we could have transcribed but it would have been repetitive. Also, Leonard Garcia has plenty to say about Jamie Varner.

INTERVIEWER: “Let’s talk for a second here because Evan was telling me earlier that, you know, you seemed real quiet lately and we haven’t heard a whole lot from you. So, let’s talk Jamie Varner.”

DONALD CERRONE: “I don’t know if I can say any more shit about Jamie Varner. I’ve exhausted myself talking about how he has no backbone and what a bitch he is and I really can’t say much more. I just hope he shows up, I hope he just doesn’t throw himself [into a car out] in front of traffic before the fight so he doesn’t have to come.”

INTERVIEWER: “I mean, I have to laugh because… I mean, no one hates someone more than you hate Jamie Varner. I mean, it’s just…”

DONALD CERRONE: “This is real, this isn’t like the WEC trying to get us to you know to amp it up, which I’m not. He’s really a fag. I mean, that’s what he is, you know, and his true colors will show up. You can’t hide your colors, man. They’re going to turn up and everyone’s going to see. He’s going to call timeout or he’s going to look for a way out, he’s got the bitch gene, man, and when you have a bitch gene it don’t matter what you do you can’t fight and you’re either born with it and that’s who you are as a person and you can’t fix that, you know, and it’s going to come out.”

(snip)

DONALD CERRONE: “That’s just how I feel about him, you know, I wasn’t… I was sitting out there with my grandma the other day, you know, she was just talking about living a way of life, she’s like not only am I a talker but I’m also a walker, you know what I mean, and I plan on going in there and backing up everything that I have to say and that’s just my true feelings on the dude. He has no backbone, he has no spine, he’s just a little bitch, man. I can’t take nothing away from the guy as a fighter, I think he’s a champion. He’s a great fighter but as a person and when the going gets tough, when he all of a sudden is the nail and no longer the hammer, he’s a little bitch, he looks for a way out. He calls time outs, you know what I mean? Just, these are all the things I honestly feel about the guy and I’m not going to hold nothing back so…”

(snip)

INTERVIEWER: “The change in this fight as opposed to the last one…”

DONALD CERRONE: “I mean, that was two years ago, you know? Two years ago I was a different fighter. Two years ago, I was in love with my jiu-jitsu, you know I was submitting everyone coming up through the ranks so that was my problem. I figured I was going to come in here, just like every other wrestler, you know take me down, I was going to sit in my guard and submit ’em and God dammit if I almost got him in the second round but… you know I’ve evolved a lot as a fighter working a lot of wrestling … and unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to show it in my last fight because I got, you know, I got caught and that’s the name of the game and you know a lot has evolved in my fight game from two years ago to now. I feel that I’m going to go out there and let everyone see, wow, damn, Cowboy does know how to wrestle, you know, wow, he does know how to fight. I’m going to take to it him and let the bitch come out of him.”

INTERVIEWER: “And do you feel that maybe your emotions might have a lot to play in this?”

DONALD CERRONE: “I hope my emotions have all to do, yeah, I hope my emotions have everything to do with this fight. I hope they come out and I’m just fucking fired up and all I want to do is go out there and kill him and that’s what going to get me going that first round, you know, I want to come in that first round and just rip his face off, you know that’s the plan. I don’t want to come in and sit back and let him dictate it, I hope my emotions drive me. I fight better on emotion, ask Leonard, he trains me every day. When I’m hot and some new guy comes in the gym and wants to throw down, that’s when I do my best, you know. So, I hope my emotions take over and I just kill this dude. I hope this is the first death in MMA.”

The last time someone affiliated with the WEC said something about wanting to kill his opponent in the Octagon, that really didn’t work out so well for Frank Mir.

  1. Bryan says:

Ok, Cerrone called him “bitch”, “fag”, hopes he “rips his face off”, hopes “this is the first death in MMA”, and hopes he “doesn’t throw himself into oncoming traffic” to duck the fight. Oh well, par for the course at this point really.

I’m more offended that he didn’t know the difference between to and too.

    • jj says:

that would be the transcribers fault

I thought it was a quote off his twitter page? I could never cheer for anyone who has such poor knowledge of the English language. The death threats shouldn’t bother anyone.

        • jj says:

yeah, you’re right on his twitter post he used to when he should have used too. but it’s pretty damn funny that you’re being a grammar nazi over a twitter post.

  3. Two dudes who aren’t even top 30 lightweights talk trash and get people to care about a fight that basically doesn’t matter. I mean, great for Cerrone, but him talking trash doesn’t make me care about this fight any more than I did yesterday.

    • 45 Huddle says:

I have Varner in my Top 30. Near the bottom of course….

I am looking forward to the day that Zuffa starts to use Flyweight and the WEC Lightweight Division is abolished. Then guys like Cerrone will get their proper place on cards…. And not try and act like the top tier main eventers they are not.
