Fox Sports: "Zach Arnold's Fight Opinion site is one of the best spots on the Web for thought-provoking MMA pieces."

Don’t mess with lawyers in MMA

By Zach Arnold | April 16, 2009

Print Friendly and PDF

I knew a few agents who used to be in the MMA business who were lawyers and sharp as hell. Rob Maysey is someone who I classify in that category as well. Don’t mess with the legal fraternity.

On another MMA ‘journalistic’ side note, Sam Caplan is now the head of WAMMA.

What is worse? Sherdog or WAMMA?

So far it doesn’t seem like Strikeforce is getting behind WAMMA. Without the UFC or Strikeforce, WAMMA is useless. And that is for the best. A bunch of corrupt garbage that thing is.

Also, this is just another example of how over her head Loretta Hunt is being in charge of a website that gives it’s content to ESPN.

I have actively bashed her for how bad she is, and that is way before her issues with Dana White. She just isn’t very bright and would get laughed out of any other sports for how bad of a job she does.

Does this mean there will be a holy war between 5oz and BloodyElbow? WAR LUKIE!

  3. David M says:

Rob Maysey is very sharp and sherdog is fucked. They are either going to settle or get their shit pushed in publicly.

  4. Michaelthebox says:

I sometimes wonder how rational Caplan is.

  5. Dave says:

Well, I guess that the lawsuit or even threat of one makes Sherdog legitimate! Give ’em credentials!

I just think that Caplan loves MMA and has a bunch of opportunities from what he has done and is going for them. Do I think they are good ideas? Well, that is another story.

  6. Zack says:

45…for someone who likes to slam Sherdog, you seem to spend a fair amount of time with their product. Just recently weren’t you referencing the Beatdown After the Bell radio show, stating what was said? Also, weren’t you complaining they didn’t do one for after WEC?

If you hate the product so much, why do you listen to 2 hour long radio shows and crave more? Also, you don’t understand the structure over there anyway. Loretta Hunt is “in charge?” Source? Or is that just another one of your dumbfuck opinions?

  7. 45 Huddle says:

    I go to Sherdog for:

    1. Fight Finder
    2. Beatdown After The Bell
    3. Event Play-by-Play

The website does have a few good uses. The rest feels like low quality.

It’s not like I read all their articles. I typically try to stay away. As for Loretta Hunt, I couldn’t stand her even back in her Full Contact Fighter Days, so it doesn’t have that much to do with Sherdog.

  8. 45 Huddle says:

As for Hunt being in charge… She is the news editor. Unless Sherdog does things differently, that means she is basically in charge of the news. And they typically do a horrible job at that.

  9. Zack says:

“As for Hunt being in charge… She is the news editor. Unless Sherdog does things differently, that means she is basically in charge of the news. And they typically do a horrible job at that.”

How would you know if you don’t read it? And the 3 things you listed, it seems like you actually get a lot out of the website. Maybe you should stay away from lame comments like “Whats worse? Wamma or Sherdog?”

  10. 45 Huddle says:

Zack, do you write for Sherdog or something?

And I don’t have to read all the articles to know that information. Other websites have quoted Loretta Hunt and that is her title being used.

The Fight Finder is much better then FCFighters (do they even still have it). Beatdown after the bell because I enjoy listening to commentary after the event, and I do think Breem has some solid opinions. And for Play-By-Play, it’s mostly just to find out the winners if other websites don’t have the information up. Typically MMA Junkie is the fastest to have round by round information if they are doing the event.

Plus, I use to listen to Beatdown a lot when Gross was around, so I understand the site from that.

And I think my comment about Sherdog & WAMMA is legit. WAMMA is beyond useless. And Sherwood has such a hatred for Dana White that it gets in the way of it being a good website. From who he picks to be writing and editing articles, to their over emphasis of the IFL because it was competition to the UFC…. Sherdog.com has a long history of being garbage.

    @ Michaelthebox:

He’s emotional. He knows about MMA, but doesn’t understand it to the extent he thinks he does. My favourite piece (from when I still read the site) was his piece on why Rashad would be trampled by Chuck.

He had deleted some of my very simple questions of him. Once he responded to one post of mine but then deleted the reply I made to that. I guess that was his way of winning arguments, by shutting down discussion.

Still, 5 Oz was better when he was the main writer. I’ve barely visited since it left the blog-format.

  12. Mr. Dream says:

Sherwood hosts one of the worst radio shows I’ve ever listened to. I once had it playing in the background, and nearly an hour went by without a mention of MMA.

I do enjoy Beatdown though, you’ll get some wrestling talk now and again but they do try to stay on topic for the most part. That and MMA Nation are the radio shows I find worthwhile.

  13. 45 Huddle says:

Funny that the same day I bash Sherdog & Sherwood, BloodyElbow posts this:

“During the interview, White claims his long running problems with Jeff Sherwood of Sherdog.com stem from a previous dispute over the sale of UFC DVDs on Sherdog.com. White contends Sherdog.com sold UFC DVDs after first purchasing them from the UFC itself. However, White said the UFC eventually found a new distributor for the DVDs, which wound up raising the prices for UFC DVDs. White finally contends that Sherdog.com (presumably he means Jeff Sherwood) threatened to either cover only PRIDE or spend more effort covering PRIDE than the UFC in retaliation (the details of White’s contention are not clear based on the video alone) if the UFC did not keep the same price for DVDs before the new distributor was used.”

If this is true, then Dana White had every right to have them stop being at UFC events.

  14. Zack says:

45…if that’s the reason for revoking Sherdog’s press credentials, why were MMA Weekly and FCF also revoked at the exact same time? Makes no sense.

  15. Oops! says:

Because Dana White likes to control what the MMA Media report’s.

    Simple answer is power.

By the way Jordan Breen Show rock’s!
    nuff said.

  16. 45 Huddle says:

You get burned real bad by something, for many people, it would be typical to have a knee jerk reaction like Dana White did. You aren’t going to keep going back to it. In this case, he was burnt badly by a more amateur MMA website. There was also no way to know who was the amateurs and who were for real. It’s not like any major news entities were covering them at the time anyways.

  17. Ivan Trembow says:

lol at the latest lies from someone with a long history of lies (not the least of which was spreading the Zuffa Myth to any mainstream media outlet that was ignorant enough of the facts to print it). In fact, the entire MMA media (except for InsideFighting) had their credentials pulled at the same time in 2005. So in Dana White’s alternate version of history, he had this dispute with Sherdog, and that caused him to pull the credentials of a bunch of other media outlets that had nothing to do with Sherdog. Yeah, that story makes a lot of sense…

  18. Ivan Trembow says:

The transcript of Dana White’s latest embarrassing interview about Fedor Emelianenko is up here:

    http://www.carmichaeldave.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=79:a-carmichael-dave-exclusive-dana-white-on-fedor-emelianenko&catid=36:mma

… and it’s hilarious. Every time this man opens his mouth, more of his credibility flies away.

  19. EJ says:

Actually it’s more like everytime Dana opens his mouth butthurt mma fans across the internet start acting like a buch of cry babies.

  20. Steve4192 says:

I still don’t understand why people get their panties in a bunch over Dana’s opinion of Fedor.

You want to get upset about his use of the faggot? I get that.

You want to get upset about his verbal diatribe against Loretta Hunt? I get that.

You want to get upset about some of his draconian business practices? I get that.

But getting upset because he doesn’t share you opinion about one particular fighter? That’s just silly. Who cares what Dana thinks about Fedor. He is a promoter. Of course he is going to talk up his own guys and talk shit about guys who aren’t under his banner.

Dana’s primary responsibility is to sell the UFC product, and saying “ZOMG! Fedor is teh awesome! He would kill all of my guys.” runs counter to that responsibility. Dana will never bow at the altar of Fedor, no matter what he really thinks of the guy.

  21. Ivan Trembow says:

No one is saying that he should say, “ZOMG! Fedor is teh awesome! He would kill all of my guys.” But at the same time, he doesn’t have to say things that destroy any remaining semblance of his own credibility, things like “Fedor is a farce” or “Fedor is a fraud” or “Fedor is so fat” or “Fedor’s people want me to build a stadium in Russia!” or “Fedor has never beaten anyone.” And what he says does make a difference because he has a legion of sycophantic fans who take what he says as gospel and believe whatever he says to be true.
