Klitschko or Kimbo?
By Zach Arnold | February 26, 2008

That was the question asked today by Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon on ESPN.
The fact is, amongst the various American sportswriters (for better or for worse), Kimbo Slice is the symbol of MMA. Both Kornheiser and Wilbon called MMA “savagery” on TV.

Wow, that’s like saying the Edsel represents all cars…it’s savagery, I tell ya!
I love savagery. Remember when Chuck savaged Babalu so bad, Renato tried to single-leg the ref.
Nnnow that’s good savagery.
Savagery beats fixed boxing decisions anyday. Boxing is dying; just watch Kimbo vs. Mercer.
It’s interesting to see how their attitudes have changed about MMA in the past few years. Wilbon appeared to give both MMA and NASCAR a chance after not attempting to watch either of them for years, but at least now now he’s talking about MMA as something that he’s missing out on because he can’t watch it (ie, he talks as if there’s something wrong with him for not being able to watch it, as opposed to there being something wrong with the sport itself).
He also knows enough to sound semi-knowledgeable (or not completely un-educated on the subject) if MMA comes up in conversation on the air with someone like Dan Le Betard who actually is an MMA fan. (ie, Wilbon will say, “I want to see Rampage fight so-and-so.”)
Kornheiser also says that he can’t watch it, but that’s not surprising because he is in his 50s and even the UFC has poor ratings in the over-50 demographic (Wilbon is almost 50 himself). Kornheiser’s attitude on this has changed as well, in the sense that today he said that he can’t stomach it because he’s “just too old.” Again, he talks as if there’s something wrong with him for not being able to stomach it, as opposed to there being something wrong with the sport itself.
that show is great, even if you don’t agree with their opinions, it’s a great way to catch up on mainstream sports .. they put their show up on the podcast everyday
