Spirit MC Ring Girls: Tall, thin, hot.

By Zach Arnold | February 25, 2008

Print Friendly and PDF

Guest column by MMA Weekly South Korea correspondent John Evans

If you are looking for legitimate MMA news, skip ahead now, because this article is primarily about tall, thin, hot women, promotion marketing, and me.

The genesis came about during an informal lunch a couple of months ago with a couple of the hierarchy from Spirit MC, South Korea’s leading MMA organization. The topic was how to get the word out about Korean fighters. Spirit MC had recently become a ProElite partner organization, but had yet to secure Showtime programming for one of its events. To put it simply, it was a case of great fighters, great events, zero North American exposure. Lim Jae Suk had already competed and won in the Elite XC show in Corpus Christi, Texas, but even in Korea, few, save the hard core fight fans, had taken notice. My proposal was this:

Until you have an English language television presence, you’ll have to rely on website traffic for the majority of your international public relations. Most times a guy visits an organization’s website, he spends two minutes finding out what he needs to know, then goes immediately to the pictures of the ring girls. Casual fans don’t know much about Korean fighters, save the fact the Brock Lesnar beat the crap out of Min Soo Kim, but they’ll learn about them if they visit the website and watch the highlight videos. You guys get a hold of the Spirit MC ring girls, (known as Spirit Angels), and we’ll take them out some night. We’ll get all liquored-up at the best clubs in Kang Nam, I’ll take a bunch of photographs and we’ll charge everything to the company as an entertainment expense. I’ll follow up with an article and pictures that will generate web traffic a plenty, at least enough to crash your server.

There was a short pause, followed by universal approval. Highlight films, specifically knock outs, are key. The MMA world is full of people who can submit Kimbo Slice, but everyone in the world wants to see Kimbo Slice fight. Spirit MC already had KO’s and ring girls to spare on the Korean version of its home page. It was a great idea, but one that would have to be temporarily put on hold because it was auto show season and the girls were very busy.

But I digress. Here is Seung Hyeon Seo.

Seung Hyeon is primarily a motor sports model and it shows. With high heels she’s nearly six feet tall and when exposed to a camera she immediately transforms into something akin to an octopus on a submerged dance floor, as she continuously morphs from one seductive pose to the next. She is twenty-two and single, but an intimidating proposition, as she’s looking for a tall, handsome, rich man who is willing to send her at least twenty text messages a day. If you’re feeling like you’ve got the initiative, she can be contacted via a link on her fan club home page. Good luck with the Google search.

Here is Mi Sun Lee.

Mi Sun is a sweetheart who was a successful web page designer before burning out, quitting her job, and making the transformation from part time to full time model. She is the quieter of the two, despite having a pretty good understanding of English. Her boyfriend, (yes, of course I asked again, but only for the article), owns a Harley Davidson dealership in Kang Nam. Mi Sun likes motorcycles, MMA, and is disappointed by quick stoppages that deprive her of the opportunity to carry the round cards. Like Seung Hyun she is tall and thin, but it is her smile that sets her apart.

If you haven’t noticed from the backgrounds, my Hefner-esque night on the town turned into a one beer lunch with half the girls at a T.G.I. Friday’s. Such is life.

MMA journalism is a gray business. Every reporter out there knows ten times more than he prints, every promotion around is meticulous and calculated in the way it releases information. Press conferences can be as staged as presidential debates and email queries often filter through managers. “There’s nothing I would change about my training camp, I was in the best shape of my life,” could very well back-translate as, “I was in a funk and consumed nothing but warm Milwaukee’s Best and big Macs until six days before the fight. I nearly passed out on the scale from cutting so much #$*& water weight.” Tell it all once, you’re finished; scratch a back every now and then, everybody stays happy… including this reporter.

Here are the pertinent facts: A Spirit MC show is one hundred times better than some Midwestern gymnasium cage debacle, at half the price, and the Spirit Angels are smoking hot. If you can’t wait until the North American television deal comes through, you can check them out at www.spiritmc.org, or catch a show live if you ever find yourself in Seoul, South Korea.

  1. Now this is the kind of article I can get used to!

  2. catch says:

    Wow…

My first reaction was to do a doubletake (making sure I wasn’t on fightlinker.com), then I scroll down and sure enough, the first comment is from fightlinker.

  3. Chuck says:

YYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! You hooked me Zach. And you mentioned Seung Hyeon Seo is single and looking right? For a tall rich man? How about a 5’6″ fella that is looking to maybe get into the pro wrestling busines (as a wrestler) who is 21 years old? Can you put in a good word for me? PLEASE!!!!!

  4. sebastian says:

So, after reading this, I go to the website… and there’s no Spirit Angels to be found! What the hell?!
    🙂

  5. David says:

    Great read 🙂

  6. joeblow says:

I’ve been wanting to watch their shows for awhile. I miss soccer kicks. Oh… yeah asian girls too.

  7. Bevis says:

That John Evans correspondent always writes the best articles. I speak for everyone who read the article…..why didn’t they feed as many drinks as possible to the girls, fill a baby pool full of Jello, then take the pictures. You would think they know a thing about entertainment demographics and what I want to see.
