Detroit Free Press columnist attacks Michigan MMA legislation

By Zach Arnold | December 15, 2007

Print Friendly and PDF

The media backlash in the state of Michigan towards the new sanctioning of MMA is picking up steam.

Several months ago, we pointed out a couple of articles (here and here) in the Grand Rapids Press that were over-the-top in their criticism of Michigan passing legislation to regulate Mixed Martial Arts.

Today, the stakes were raised as boxing writer Mike Brudenell of The Detroit Free Press wrote a flimsy column in which he spoke in defense of boxing and against MMA with all of the played-out, tired cliches that you’ve grown to know and love in the North American mainstream media. Here’s a taste of Brudenell’s diatribe:

From what I’ve seen of various mixed martial arts matches on TV, the object of the contest is to inflict serious punishment on the opponent with fists, elbows, feet and forearms, much like a pub brawl.

If we don’t stop it now, sooner or later we’ll be passing legislation for gladiator contests — fights to the death, with the fate of the participants in the hands of the audience or those at home watching the Ultimate Reality Show.

I’d like to see a reality show where stupid boxing writers get murdered in a cage.

There, got that fixed for ya.

  3. Steve says:

Ugh. I’m ashamed to be a Michigander with retards like that writing for our newpapers.

  4. Charles says:

Maybe these MMA companies should band together and do a PR documentary piece in the spirit of Ken Burns “Baseball” about MMA to air on PBS and some of these “high brow” critics can get a proper education on the roots of MMA,the fighters, the current state of the game, etc.

But for some reason I can see the UFC not cooperating and either wanting to do the entire thing themselves, or witholding valuable footage.

Oh who am I kidding, the UFC would completely ruin an educational piece and come off as completley self-serving.

  5. People take Brudenell seriously?

    ….really?
