Over at MMAHQ.net, a new round of voting has started for MMA fighter rankings. Go vote now.

ESPN’s Buster Olney recently interviewed Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain and UFC was a favorite topic of conversation:

It was awesome! It def is getting bigger than boxing! Even had a couple guys from Nebraska fighting! There is so much more that goes into it than boxing. You got the martial arts aspect, ground and pound. It’s just so complex in all areas of training!

Q & A with Jake Shields.

How about the promotion so far for Liddell vs. Silva?

Meet Jack “Mr. Fantastic” Sexton.

  1. Interestingly enough, UFC Unleashed featured a Wanderlei Silva fight… from UFC 20. The UFC is still not utilizing the PRIDE library to its full extent.

  2. Zach Arnold says:

Leland – send me an e-mail and let’s talk about the PRIDE library.

  3. ttt says:

maybe people will be confused why “ultimate fighting” is being conducted without an octagon

  4. Matthew Watt says:

    Zach,

I have been busy with studying for finals and also a ton of personal garbage, but I just want you to know the new layout is above and beyond the old setup. Good job, you should congratulate yourself.

  5. Ultimo Santa says:

This fight is more critical than most people think.

A loss for Chuck would be devestating, since Dana is still pushing him as “by far” the most popular fighter in the world – not to mention the fact that he’s said numerous times that he could “easily” beat Silva.

A 3 fight losing skid would be a disaster considering the ‘What Have You Done For Me Lately’ attitude of the casual fan (and from what I’ve read, most hardcore fans too). American audiences are VERY unforgiving, and have long memories for bad performance.

This story definetly deserves to be posted in my eye.

  7. Jim Allcorn says:

Thanks Matt, for bringing that piece to the attention of those who might’ve missed it. Excellent job by Josh Gross IMO.

It gave us some insight into the gentleman who gave his life to MMA both figuratively & sadly, literally. Let us know that he wasn’t just some nameless, faceless “ham & egger” who took the fight for beer money. He was, in fact, a well trained, dedicated professional who just happened to get hit with the wrong shots at the wrong time, punishment that, for whatever reasons, his body was unable to absorb and/or recover from. An inherent risk that every fighter takes when he steps into the ring or the cage.

Something many fans ( the vast majority IMO ) overlook. Mistakenly thinking that the statements that fighters make about “putting their lives on the line” is all cliche prefight hype. Which, of course, it is not.

  8. Andrej says:

I guess Jake Shields won’t be fighting Carlo Prater anytime soon. The welterweight division outside the Zuffa umbrella is getting thin on talent. I do like the matchup with Carlos Condit vs Carlo Prater coming up in the new year.

  9. The Gaijin says:

“Interestingly enough, UFC Unleashed featured a Wanderlei Silva fight… from UFC 20. The UFC is still not utilizing the PRIDE library to its full extent.”

I gotta wonder if part of the reason is that most of Silva’s spectacular KO’s involve the use of knees/kicks/stomps to a downed opponent (and UFC doesn’t want to expose their fans to those types of rules that they can’t use) OR they involve the current UFC LHW Champ Rampage Jackson.

Plus they are probably just so sour over the PRIDE debacle, they never want it mentioned again – and by owning the rights to the name they can likely go a long way to ensuring they never give that name publicity again.
