Thursday trash talk: Marc Ecko supporting M-1?

By Zach Arnold | October 17, 2007

If you have not yet signed up for the brand new MMA HQ Fighter Rankings site, go sign up. First-day turn out was great and I want to see as many readers as possible sign up. I think Dr. J is building an excellent project here.

Just asking… Monte Cox was pretty quick in publicly stating that he would not work with the IFL any longer. Rarely does an agent with his business smarts shut the door on someone in the fight industry so quickly and so publicly. Where does Monte stand in relation to M-1? Is he going to be a part of M-1? Fedor will be at a press conference this Monday. Take a look at who Steve Sievert names – Marc Ecko, as in the Marc Ecko who spent $750,000 USD on Barry Bonds’ 756 HR baseball and did an online vote to determine whether or not he should put an asterisk on the baseball and send it to Cooperstown.

A second opinion about UFC’s financial situation:

It looks to me like the Fertitas and Dana White “cashed out” and purposely switched to a very risky capital structure. Can’t say I blame them; they get to keep all the upside potential of the company while passing off the downside to their lender. This sort of thing often proceeds a bankruptcy. It signals to me that Zuffa’s owners may not be all that confident in the long-term profitability of the company.

Jason “Mayhem” Miller is now a free agent.

Steve Cofield interviews the latest contestant to lose on The Ultimate Fighter. Plus, Mac Danzig explains his attitude on the show.

Kevin Iole’s speculative math about how much Randy Couture was making per fight in UFC has now hit the mainstream blogs. Luke Thomas is having a coronary right about now. The lesson to be learned here is all about how UFC or UFC allies handle business through the media and what messages are or aren’t being sent out for mass consumption. It certainly places the burden both fighters and agents to develop smarter media response strategies in the future.

A contrarian viewpoint on Randy Couture.

Future degenerate MMA gamblers, take heart. It’s fun reading.

Put this in the “don’t know what to make of it, yet” category: Pro Elite says drug testing will take place at Cage Rage events.

CBS Sports has a new-look UFC 77 preview that you should check out. Alex Marvez will be covering UFC 77 for Fox Sports and he has an article online now talking about Jorge Gurgel. The Miami Herald has a profile/interview article with Rich Franklin. Here’s an article talking about what it took for UFC to get the US Bank Arena booked for Franklin’s fight. Franklin recently talked about why he went to go training in Wyoming. Interesting thing I noticed – look at the opening of the Register’s article and compare it to the opening Kevin Iole used (Iole’s article was published first)…

Georges St. Pierre will face the winner of the Matt Serra/Matt Hughes 12/29 Las Vegas fight.

Ricardo Almeida is coming to UFC.

The Belfast Telegraph has an article previewing the upcoming Celtic Rage event at Kings Hall this weekend.

Making the argument that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is boxing’s only crossover star.

  1. ProElite owned King of the Cage has a neo nazi fighting for them. I’ve got a little message sending project for anyone who wants to let ProElite president Kelly Perdew know that we don’t like Nazis very much.

  2. jeff aka whaledog says:

Two points about the report on Randy’s and Chuck’s fight purses.

First, if Chuck and Randy are paid a percentage of PPV, then how can we know the total value of the contracts?

Second, if Zuffa leaked the numbers to Iole, did they violate the confidentiality clause that is almost assuredly in their fight agreements?

Inquiring minds would like to know.

  3. Zach Arnold says:

Jeff – sorry I didn’t get a chance to return mail to you. I agree with your sentiments wholeheartedly.

As far as media leaks, there are always technicalities – mainly third parties, meaning one party tells someone else and that someone else tells a writer information that needs to be relayed.

  4. PizzaChef says:

You forgot that the other voting option on Barry Bonds’ baseball is wether or not they should launch it into space. 😛

  5. Ivan Trembow says:

I have never heard those numbers on Randy Couture’s contract before. That doesn’t mean that those numbers are or aren’t true, it just means that I’ve never heard them before.

  6. Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Well, the guy who is writing the “second opinion” is missing a key piece of information, even though he’s right about EBITDA being incredibly misleading (except that it more closely measures cash flow, and that’s what lenders are worried about, not profits).

That is that Zuffa didn’t just take out 350 mil in loans for the hell of it, they took it out, in large part, to replace loans that they previously had. It’s not replacing 100% owners equity with 100% creditor’s equity, it’s replacing 90% creditors equity and 10% owners equity with 100% creditors equity.

And yeah, they probably have negative owners equity now.

  7. 45 Huddle says:

Meltzer has said that after PPV buys, Couture made around $1.5 Million for UFC 68. Or at least that is what they expected. Now, if there were more PPV Buys then expected, he could have walked away with $2 Million. So even with those numbers, I only see $8 Million over 4 fights. Which is still a lot of money.

  8. 45 Huddle says:

I know this won’t happen, but wouldn’t it be crazy is Dana White gets in the octagon on Saturday, says that he is an American Entertainment Company, and then proceeds to tell the crowd that he signed Fedor/Couture.

In a crazy year like this one has been…. You never know. I give it a .02% chance of happening….

  9. Marc Ecko is so weird…

It’s almost like everything he turns his attention to turns to crap other than that clothing thing. His videogame was complete and utter … best not to think about it.

I’m going to start posting on a new blog sooner or later. It’ll be more or less random crap, but most likely it will focus on economics, accounting, and MMA.

‘Cause that’s how I roll, yo.

    It’ll be here eventually: http://blog.subbuteoclub.com/

  10. Sam Scaff says:

So where is the M1 Press Conference going to be in M1? Anyone know?

  11. Rohan says:

Cage Rage co-founder and promoter Dave O’Donnell said. “Drug taking will not be tolerated on a Cage Rage promotion.’’

    Magic.

  12. Same here Ivan. Couture’s recently reported salary figures came out of no where based on past information but Iole is pretty close to the UFC so I have to take them as being fairly accurate unless someone proves otherwise.

  13. The news about Ecko was released in a press release announcing the press conference. I found out about it on Pancrase.org.

  14. nem0 says:

Ecko’s video game had promise, but the execution sucked. Maybe he can hire a better team if he makes another one (which he probably won’t, since the first one flopped.)

  15. Zack says:

Anyone else notice that the “neo nazi” fighter also has a tattoo that says “I have a small penis?”

  16. D.Capitated says:

I’ve only ever seen one Melvin Costa and nothing was asked about the tattoos. It seems like it was danced around as a topic with “You get a lot of people talking” and him responding, “Yeah, and I like it that way.” He came out of prison and straight into MMA also, and the tattoo is the Aryan Brotherhood symbol, so its pretty obvious what the deal was.

  17. Aguri Super says:

The music for the UFC opening and promos suck balls.

    The band sucks even harder..

  18. Matthew Watt says:

I think Monte has a really good connection to M-1. Would not be surprised to see him involved with the promotion of the company in america. Makes you wonder though, he is a agent, yet also on the payroll of M-1? Kind of a grey area if you ask me.

  19. ColumbiaLou says:

    Mr. Fightlinker,

The National Socialist German Workers Party no longer exists. It was a political party in German. Melvin Costa is not a “Nazi” , since that political party does not exist. Costa is not even a german name.

In American prisons, black and hispanic inmates often assault and rape Germanic, Celtic, Slavic looking prisoners. Joining the Aryan Brotherhood in prison is often the only way to protect oneself. The fact that black and hispanic inmates are engaging in racially motivated assaults and anal rapes doesn’t seem to bother the American media. Does it bother you?

Jeff Monson has a Communist hammer and sickle tatoo. Communist parties killed around 100 million people in the 20th century. Let me repeat that. 100 fucking million human beings-killed in labor camps, death camps, and planned mass starvations. Are you outraged about Jeff Monson fighting in MMA Mr. Fighlinker? Do the lives of 100 million people count in your mind? Did you send a message to the UFC saying you don’t like Communist fighters that much? Disgusting.

  20. Kemp says:

I bet that Fedors first fight in M-1 will be against Randy Couture. And I bet randy couture has already been signed for the fight. I mean how did randy know how much the UFC offered fedor unless a second party with a connection to Fedor (Fedors agent and former owner of M-1) told him in an attempt to sign him.

  21. klown says:

    ColumbiaLou,

    Take your fascist apologetics elsewhere.

  22. hankd says:

Monte Cox is the new CEO of M1…

also have Fedor’s terms at our site…mmahaven.com.

  23. ColumbiaLou says:

    klown,

Take your pro communist, anti Germanic hate elsewhere.
