Saturday update: The road to UFC 74
By Zach Arnold | August 25, 2007

This is a primer for you to read before UFC 74 takes place.
NPR (National Public Radio) did an article on MMA that was… well… it was what it was. The New York State Athletic Commission once again came out against MMA and in favor of boxing. The article also shamelessly parrots The Zuffa Myth. Dana White is also quoted in the article as saying that “there is not a problem with steroids” in MMA.
If you are a member of MMA Predictions, make sure to get your picks in for both the ShoXC and UFC 74 events tonight. Plus, I know there is a BodogFight event in Vancouver (an event in which Mark Weir got injured at). Here is the day one taping results.
The weigh-in results for UFC 74.
Diego Sanchez claims that Georges St. Pierre’s arrival at Greg Jackson’s camp led to him deciding to leave Albuquerque.
Steve Cofield audio interviews: Diego Sanchez | Brandon Vera | Randy Couture | Josh Koscheck | Roger Huerta
There will be a live online chat with Dan Henderson this coming Monday.
A link from our friends at Fighters Only Magazine… Dana White says that Gonzaga ‘pwns’ Mirko at the 16:38 mark.

I don’t know about everybody else, but I’m watching ShoXC tonight instead of the UFC!!!!
Well, that makes at least one of you! Seriously, though, the logic of going head-to-head with the UFC PPV instead of having the ShoXC event on Friday night just doesn’t make sense.
On our interview this week with Mauro Ranallo, Mauro stated that the reason the ShoXC event is on a Saturday instead of a Friday is because the building in Vicksburg asked them to move it to a Saturday (it was booked on Friday).
Thanks for linking to our little newspaper in Delaware- Braga’s school is a great place to train, and is getting bigger each week. (Too bad our little paper from Delaware can’t get Napao’s name right…)
I just finished listening to the interview with Mauro Ranallo. I’m sure he is a nice guy, but boy… He is one annoying commentator. He answers a question with 100 words when it should take 25. The guy can’t just step out of being an announcer and give a legit interview. It is like he is always doing his shtick…. Unless that is how he talks to his friends… Then that is even more scary. I know a lot of the hardcore fan base enjoys his commentary, but he has negative appeal to a casual fan base. Especially with that god awful Canadian Accent. Sorry if this sounds like bashing, but how can somebody be in broadcasting since the age of 16 and not have that accent fixed already? It’s no different then a southern accent in America. Unless you are announcing NASCAR or Bull Riding, it just doesn’t fly. Heck, Bill Walton turning himself from a stumbling idiot (with words) to a respectable announcer for the NBA….. End Rant…..
As for UFC 74….. Besides the two main events, I’m basically indifferent to the rest of the PPV fights. Nothing really peaks my interest. UFC 75 & 76 are much better cards to me overall. I kind of hope the main card fights all end early so we can see the fights that actually do interest me…. Like Babalu/Heath and Guida/Aurelio…..
You neglected to mention that the top story in the “Related NPR Stories” at the bottom of that page is “Inside the Underground World of Dog Fighting”. You guys here at Fight Opinion really ought to be proud of yourselves if the people at friggin’ NPR write an article like this.
That’s how Mauro talks in real life.
Why the Mauro bashing? He isn’t one of the great announcers like Gordon Solie or Bill Wallace, but he is ok.
Oh, and, GO CRANE GO!…GO CRANE GO!..GO CRANE GO! Put an end to this clown tonight, please.
“Pwns Mirko CroCop.”
Un-freakin-believable. Did Dana say this right after a session of Halo 2 multiplayer or World of Warcraft?
Everyone should take note that on the site you can listen to the NPR piece from the radio, which is decidedly different than the written article.
The article summarizes the radio piece but misses some significant detail and does not really capture the tone of the piece.
And buys predictions?
I’d ask the same for Summerslam, but I don’t want to miss Super China Buffet Day.
“Did Dana say this right after a session of Halo 2 multiplayer or World of Warcraft?”
Seriously you guys, when I heard that I laughed so hard… for like 20 minutes non-stop.
Gonzaga… pwns Cro Cop…. pffttt!
Ah this is ridiculous now, I need to stop
