Monday evening headlines: Rampage’s close-up on ESPN

By Zach Arnold | May 28, 2007

Print Friendly and PDF

Luke Thomas over at Bloody Elbow analyzes the activity from this past week and what it means for MMA. This guy has some talent. He appeared on ESPN Radio this morning with Colin Cowherd. Listen here.

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson did an interview at 7:45 PM EST with Brian Kenny on Monday on SportsCenter (ESPN). Rampage had the UFC belt placed in front of him (he is still in Las Vegas). Rampage says he’s going to buy himself a monster truck and play video games. Rampage said that he powerbombs fighters like pro-wrestling “but it’s real.” Rampage says MMA is going to take over boxing, golf, sand dune driving, and water polo. This three-minute interview was five million stars. Get the video of this online now.

I can’t defend this post. Who knew that Houston Alexander was in PRIDE?

  1. David says:

I’ve never seen Houston in PRIDE and Rampage is funny but hes no Rogan!

  2. Ivan Trembow says:

He was also on ESPNEWS in a separate interview with anchor Mike Hill and cracked everybody up when he said, among other things, that one of the differences between fighting in Japan and America is that the culture is different so the fans are much more quiet in Japan… so quiet that he once heard his trainer fart in the middle of a fight and it distracted him.

  3. PizzaChef says:

Since there are so many pissed off UFC MARKS. Do you think they will pay good money to watch and hope Rampage will lose? Basically the Ric Flair effect.

  4. UFCDaily.com says:

Yeah I caught him on ESPNEWS as well. Loved his jokes but thought he did a good job entertaining the watchers but keeping people interested in the sport too.

  5. 45 Huddle says:

I honestly don’t think the UFC has much to worry about with Rampage as the new Light Heavyweight Champion. He has that X Factor. The intangible. He comes across like a star on the TV. He is like the complete opposite of a Nathan Marquardt (who I personally enjoy watching fight).

Now, if Henderson wins, then they will have to worry some.

But right now they have Rampage AND Liddell, both available to sell PPV’s. If they are on the same card with separate fights, that is going to sell really big.

  6. Matthew Watt says:

45 Huddle, I could not say it any better. I personally like Marquardt as a fighter, but imagine if he wins (and I am picking him too do just that). Dan Henderson is one thing, but at least Dan shows his face in front of a camera. Nate seems like the quite kid in high school who would walk in the opposite direction just so he didn’t have to talk to someone.

And Zach, I agree that ZUFFA would be silly to let Kang go. He is hugely popular among Korean mma fans and if marketed right, could have a huge following with the Canadian mma fans. I always find it surprising how few canadians know who Kang is, even though he spent his childhood growing up in Vancouver.

  7. Luke says:

    Thanks for the kind words!
