Tuesday headlines: Deadline Day

By Zach Arnold | April 30, 2007

Print Friendly and PDF

Today is supposed to be the day that the PRIDE asset transaction sale between DSE Inc. and Zuffa LLC occurs.

The Idaho Statesman is reporting that Mike Kyle will be facing Patrick Smith on May 12th at Qwest Arena in Boise, Idaho. Does anyone know if Kyle’s suspension from the California State Athletic Commission has expired or not? The 5/12 scheduled fight date would be just over a year after Kyle’s infamous WEC incident.

Take a look at this stunning cover of the latest Tatame magazine in Brazil. There is so much hypocrisy on display here by the Tatame editors. I sure didn’t see them ripping on Japan when K-1 and PRIDE were major powers five-to-six years ago. You can rip into UFC all you want, but there are American alternatives trying to compete with Zuffa at the moment and prevent a monopoly from happening. There’s a difference between ‘shocking’ readers and absolutely turning them off. Tatame’s editors played to the most baseless stereotypes with their magazine cover in order to catch a few more eyeballs.

I watched the Kyle vs Olson fight followed by Kyle’s post-fight Sherdog interview, and in my opinion, Mike Kyle should never fight again.

  2. Is it just me, or is it a sloooooooooooow news week?

  3. DarthMolen says:

    yes, it is SLOOOOOW!

I had a hard time coming up with enough content for my Internet Radio Show since it is so news dependent 🙁

  4. 45 Huddle says:

    WEC.tv

The website is new. Looks very nice/

  5. 45 Huddle says:

    According to Meltzer….

K-1 basically forced Bob Sapp off of the Cage Rage card….

And for people who complain about the UFC, you should really subscribe to the Wrestling Observer. The stuff K-1 is doing to Bob Sapp (including keeping him away from at least a million from the WWE), is nothing more then horrible. Makes White & The Fertitta’s look like a bunch of angels.

  6. 45 Huddle says:

    Other interesting stuff….

Frank Shamrock signed on for a pilot with CourTV, which would be about his training and business dealings.

Fedor got paid between $300,000 and $500,000 for his fight with Lindland.

And for all the people who think Bob Sheridan does such a great job…. Bodog has been editting his material for the 3rd season because they thought he did such a bad job. They actually added sound bits with him saying proper techniques instead of his random thoughts live.

  7. AJAX says:

Until we see a popular boxer fight a mixed martial artist in the present, boxing fans, analysts, and fighters will never shut up about who is better. They should be informed that we already saw those matchups back in the early 90’s when MMA was in its most raw form.

  8. Tomer Chen says:

To be fair, though, the best Boxers in MMA were probably Art Jimmerson (who I believe was ranked #9 at the time) and Imamu Mayfield (who was pretty much shot at the time). Not exactly Lennox Lewis and Bernard Hopkins-level guys…

  9. Samscaff says:

Bob Sheridan did a better job then any MMA announcer I’ve seen in the big leagues in the past year. Rogan, Goldy, Trigg….all f-ing terrible. pathetic.

So Trigg knows proper technique names, it doesnt stop him from blabbering on and on about himself or yelling “oh my god, oh my god” when someone gets knocked out. Dont get me started on rogan and goldy. “It is all over…it is all over.” nuff said. At least sheridan has experience…more experience than anyone else working in the fight game (mma, k1, boxing, etc)….combined!!!

  10. Jordan Breen says:

There is a massive contrast between Sheridan on the Costa Rica telecasts, and Sheridan at the Clash of the Nations PPV.

The anachronism really got my hopes up. His PPV commentary was superb, but now being forced to sit through the Costa Rica stuff, it’s beyond terrible. The guy screams, and yells, and shills like he’s a lunatic. However, hopefully the Costa Rica commentary was a learning experience and his PPV contribution at the end of the season will be solid.

If you are in the top ten, you are a high level boxer. At least high enough that people can judge how a boxer can do in general, in MMA. And Royce, who fought Jimmerson, wasn’t really a top level BJJ guy in Brazil, truth be told. There were many, many who deserved to represent JJ more than Royce.

  12. D. Capitated says:

Art Jimmerson wasn’t a top ten cruiserweight. No way, no how.

  13. Zach Arnold says:

I disagree about your comments on K-1’s treatment of Bob Sapp. Sapp’s attorney/representative is Michael Connette, who was used by DSE in the past. I’ve explained it on the site before, but K-1 claims Connette was involved in the alleged contract breach at last year’s Holland event by showing up with Sapp and Sapp refusing to fight Ernesto Hoost.

  14. SamScaff says:

Imamu Mayfield was the best boxer to ever fight MMA. He was a cruiser champ, if i’m not mistaken (not at the time of course). He fought Fujita wearing boxing gloves..what an idiot. And he’s the only guy I’ve ever seen get caught with a standing side choke. haha.

A few top boxers have fought in K1. Francois Botha, Shannon Briggs, Ray Mercer, “Cool” Vince Phillips, and others.

anyway, I heard Jeremy Williams was training for MMA. Ever since Sam Peter ended his boxing career.

  15. Jordan Breen says:

Victor Rabanales is probably the best boxer to ever fight MMA, though he was far more past his prime than Mayfield when he fought Murahama in DEEP.

  16. Tomer Chen says:

If you are in the top ten, you are a high level boxer.

Or the talent pool in the division is thin…

Art Jimmerson wasn’t a top ten cruiserweight. No way, no how.

I thought Jimmerson was ranked #10 in The Ring rankings, but I looked at my copy of “No Holds Barred” (by Clyde Gentry) and on Pg. 51 it said he was ranked #10 by the WBC and not The Ring, so I guess a bit (not too much, though) faith in The Ring and it’s goofy rankings has been restored.

Victor Rabanales is probably the best boxer to ever fight MMA,

Forgot about Rabanales doing MMA. And I agree.

  17. I remember reading that Sapp showed up without a signed contract and that K1 had promised to sign it at the show. They kept procrastinating up to the point where the guy came to tape Sapp’s hands and Sapp freaked out and said he wasn’t going out there until the contract was signed. Then one of the K1 guys basically implied if Sapp didn’t go out …. That’s when Sapp left.

  18. Rollo the Cat says:

So what is the word on the asset transfer? I assume it is all finished (???).

  19. D. Capitated says:

Jimmerson took the bout in the UFC because it was guaranteed money and he was already essentially a loser in boxing. He was 29-5 with a lot of wins over sub .500 comp in St. Louis and nothing else. He went on to lose an additional 13 bouts and suffer enough brain damage that he no longer has cognizant awareness and drools.

  20. Robert Poole says:

Man, that “Bad Max” article sucked. I’m at the point where I think all NY Journalists are garbage now.

Larry Merchant has been pretty bad for a number of years.

He is stuffy and full of himself. He speaks very slowly, repeats the same points over and over (not to mention how many times he’ll throw in some bad joke at the beginning of the broadcast and mention it again later) and he’s the worst scorer on earth (every fight does not have a 10-10 round Larry).

Max Kellerman may be younger but ageism is a stupid argument here. Merchant is in his late 70s and he speaks like it. He pauses between words more than William Shatner.

Kellerman on the other hand has more to say and does it in far less time. His genuine enthusiasm for the sport shows through and makes the broadcast more fun to watch.

I think he’ll add a lot more to the broadcast than Merchant does.

But those who long for the glory days of HBO Boxing when Merchant was still tolerable and the fight cards were much better may just be hanging on because of the memories they have with Merchant, not because of what Merchant is now.
