Is this the kind of ‘fake professional wrestling’ that Eddie Goldman criticizes?

The IFL stock went up 40 cents per share on Tuesday.

  1. PizzaChef says:

Wow, the people of Iowa must be fucking retarded. Comparing “ultimate fighting” to child abuse? Pure Christian conservative ignorance as usual.

  2. Zach Arnold says:

When it comes to trying to pass ordinances not friendly to MMA, it splits both ways politically – both liberal and conservative. No need to label such legislation as belonging strictly to one political affiliation over the other.

You do realize that it is Iowa state senate Democrats pushing this legislation, right?

“We’ve got a serious problem with shoot fighting. We’re either going to regulate it or we’re not,” said Sen. Bill Dotzler, D-Waterloo, the leading backer of the plan.

The Senate passed a de-regulation bill in late March, but the House has been unable to agree on whether to pass the bill.

So late Monday night, it was time for the head lock. Senate Democrats tacked the mixed martial arts proposal onto a larger budget bill, a bill that the House must vote on this week.

  3. Preach says:

Good to see Sylvia get surgery. My guess is that he had trouble with his back for quite some time now, as he crouched his back for the last few UFCs. Something like that isn’t too unusual for a guy his size, but him constantly doing it just goes to show there’s something not right, most probably in his lower back. Let’s just hope there’s not too much damage to his vertebrae.

And hell, am i glad that we don’t have the kind of people over here that UFC Mania has. What a bunch of *insertrandominsult*

  4. Stu says:

Eddie Goldman needs to start another radio show where he only discusses moral and politically correct behavior, maybe then he’d actually have some real MMA content on the regular show.

  5. Lynchman says:

Goldman is a hack. I have no doubt that, once upon a time, he was an actual journalist, but today he is merely a hack.

  6. klown says:

It would be “fake pro-wrestling”-like if it were more serious. The Frye-Shamrock thing appears to be in good fun.

  7. klown says:

    What’s a “corporate commie” ?

  8. Zach Arnold says:

Listen to Eddie Goldman’s newest radio show (linked above) and then watch that IFL video again. It puts it into new context.

  9. DarthMolen says:

Umm. I am pure christian conservative…

    srsly.

The good thing about the Silvia surgery is that it gives both Tim and the UFC some breathing room to recuperate.

Tim can hopefully renovate his public image and the UFC can re-establish the excitement in the Heavyweight division.

  10. DarthMolen says:

Oh. And those 2 video clips of Don Frye are classic.

You just have to get to know Don Frye on a professional level to realize that is his persona… I laughed my rear off listening to him.

Great Interview btw. I’ve had multiple occasions to interview him and each time is a different entertaining experience.

  11. klown says:

    Zach Arnold,

Point taken. I listened to Goldman’s show and posted the following comment on his blog. It hasn’t appeared yet as it is subject to the webmaster’s approval first. I am reprinting here for good measure in the post below.

  12. klown says:

    Mr. Goldman,

Once again, I appreciate your role as the “conscience of combat sports”. But I urge you to diversify your critcisms rather than targeting the UFC in what appears to be a personal vendetta.

Your sponsor, the IFL, is guilty of plenty of antisocial behavior. The blogger linked below draws attention to this buffoonish exchange between Ken Shamrock and Don Frye which is not only “pro-wrestling” in style, but is also homophobic and offensive.

    http://www.fightopinion.com/2007/04/24/wednesday-notes-ufc-draws-184-cable-rating/

While I commend you for your attention to racism, I think the combat sports are more susceptible to other oppressive constructs – those that pertain to masculinity, namely sexism and homophobia.

Please broaden your critique of the combat sports to include sexual exploitation of ring girls, and even female athletes (as Elite XC did in their initial broadcast), and homophobic trash talk. No one covers these issues, but they are important. They make our sport unwelcoming to women, children, homosexuals, and families.

I, for one, am ashamed to introduce my friends to MMA as a legitimate sport, because I know my claims will be discredibed by the incessant sexual exploitation that goes on.

    To sum up:

    1. Keep up the good work of bringing social ethics into the discussion of combat sports

    2. Do not get stuck on the UFC and Dana White (I’m not asking you to give them a free pass, not at all)

    3. Be more critical of the IFL. Your credibility is on the line because of your sponsorship by them. If anything, you should be MORE critical of IFL than other organizations, if purely to protect your journalistic reputation

    4. In addition to racism, bring up the topics of sexual exploitation, sexism and homophobia in the combat sports

    And thank you.

  13. Rollo the Cat says:

Eddie was always less interested in Mixed Martial Arts and more in Mixed Marxist Arts, where he finds race, class and gender issues behind every turnbuckle.

  14. Kev says:

You want to turn Goldman into a scold, or more accurately, a non-discriminating, equal opportunity scold? Frankly, I rather not take my ethics lessons from someone with hubris problems.

  15. Kev says:

Wow, did Goldman really just say Hitler was not really a racist, that it was all just something he pushed to gain political power? And was his basis for all of this is from one line from Mein Kampf about the masses believing a big lie?

Also, pro-wrestling fans are mutually exclusive from sports fans, faces and heels only exist in pro-wrestling (never mind Ron Artest, Barry Bonds, John Rocker and the New York Yankees). Frankly, as a wrestling fan that transitioned to MMA because I wanted to see what real technique was like, I think Goldman just denied my existance.

All in all, his “critical thinking” apparently involve finding evidence to support your hypothesis and ignore everything else.

  16. Zack says:

“this so called fake pro wrestling”

    LOL

  17. Hey everyone, I hope this isn’t considered bad form to trawl someone else’s comment section for this kind of thing, but the posters here are as good as it gets. I’m looking for more people to contribute the the blog section of Fightlinker.com. Email me at [email protected] with your user name on here and we’ll go from there.

  18. CapnHulk says:

Don Frye is a national treasure.

  19. 45 Huddle says:

That is a strong rating for the UFC. Especially when taken into account the male demographic.

The new MMA Weekly Rankings are out. They were correct in canceling out the Gomi/Diaz fight. Their rankings are still off the wall bad. If the last few months have taught us anything, it is that the UFC fighters at the very least are equal to the Pride fighters in terms of skill level. Yet the rankings continue to be dominated by Pride fighters.

    LW – Pride (7) & UFC (1)
WW – Pride doesn’t use this division yet.
    MW – Pride (6) & UFC (3)
    LHW – Pride (7) & UFC (3)
HW – More UFC guys now, but only because 3 Pride fighters recently made the switch.

Yushin Okami – No where to be found, despite being the #4 guy in the UFC.

Rashad Evans – Undefeated with strong wins over Salmon & Lambert. Both Lambert & Pride scrub Nakamura are ranked.

Where have the UFC Lightweights gone? Franca? Stevenson? Huerta?
