Thursday talk: BET on MMA

By Zach Arnold | April 18, 2007

Print Friendly and PDF

The IFL stock is now at $3.40/share. Oh my.

BET’s latest PR push for their new ‘MMA’ show:

IRON RING – Combat sports just got tougher. From the creator of ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHALLENGE, one of the most successful new sports formats in entertainment, comes a new show that introduces new celebrities from music, sports and Hollywood to the most dangerous fighters in the world. An all-star line-up of celebrities will manage teams of fighters in the best mixed martial arts match-ups on television.

Onto today’s headlines.

The Cage Fury 4/13 Atlantic City show is free to watch online now.

I have not heard anything at all about any fallout from the Tokyo meeting with DSE staff in regards to Zuffa’s ‘new system’ of management being implemented. As alluded to on the mailbag post, Zuffa’s lawyers are reportedly just looking at PRIDE contracts now. The date set for the asset transaction is May 1st – 12-13 days from today. Two weeks of analysis may not be long enough…

Pure 100% grade-A speculation

Is it just me, or with the announcements of Choi Hong-Man working K-1’s 4/28 Hawaii show and Gina Carano working the K-Grace 5/27 Differ Ariake show that certain people think the LA Coliseum show for June 2nd may not happen after all? I can’t figure out why these bookings would take place unless the 6/2 show was not happening. Never underestimate stupidity, but I don’t think K-1 is that stupid.

  1. Xenos says:

Zach, when I saw that Choi was fighting on that date I was thinking the same thing about the 6/2 event. But it’s still over a month before the Lesnar fight, so you never know. As for Carano, I don’t think she was announced as fighting on the 6/2 show, was she? I don’t believe she was at the presser.

  2. Jarred says:

Gina Carano is scheduled to fight on the EliteXC/Showtime portion of the Dynamite!! USA show.

And there’s about a 0% change that Choi will get any type of damaged vs. Mike Malone in Hawaii.

  3. JOSH says:

K-Grace people only said they would LIKE to have Carano on the show NOT that she will be. More than likely she wont

  4. Zach Arnold says:

Gina’s name is prominently mentioned in the list of workers for the show.

    Japanese fight game advertising… 🙁

  5. Jordan Breen says:

“Gina’s name is prominently mentioned in the list of workers for the show.”

She may be prominently mentioned, but she still has a big ass asterix and “Under Negotiation” next to her name:

    ジーナ・カラーノ(米国)※交渉中

  6. Xenos says:

I wish I could read Japanese.

  7. JOSH says:

    Ah Breen-san, nihongo jyozune.

  8. JThue says:

Just noticed this at the end of the Steele Cage presser:

“Also, Steele Cage will soon be announcing a major TV deal that will allow MMA fans around the country to see the show from the comfort of their home. Stay tuned for details.”

Isn’t it getting a bit ridiculous with all these “major TV deal” promises everywhere? But out of interest – where could Steele and his LV backers have pull when it comes to TV stations?

Also, Pro Elite’s Cage Rage stream will now start at 1PM EST; which means they’ll show a hell of a lot more of the full card than the live Sky Sports broadcast in the UK. Actually I think that means 6pm UK-time, which would be the very start time of the show, whereas Sky only broadcasts from 9pm and onward.

  9. Preach says:

By the way, Sapp’s dropped out of Cage Rage this coming weekend. His replacement will be Tank Abbott…

  10. JThue says:

Oh God. It’s still a strong card, but Sapp was the whole main event. I was looking forward to seeing him in action, personally. Hopefully they’ll switch up the match order.

  11. The MMA gods frown down upon Cage Rage. So it goes….

  12. Rollo the Cat says:

    Zach,

Just listened to the radio show. I hope you will keep us updated on Shedog’s upcoming “pat on the back”. As if I can’t guess where it might be coming from.
