Fight Opinion Radio: Episode 29 (PRIDE in Las Vegas)

By Zach Arnold | October 26, 2006

Print Friendly and PDF

Right after we taped our newest show (reviewing the PRIDE Las Vegas event), news broke that both Vitor Belfort and Pawel Nastula failed their drug tests (issued by the NSAC). Will the company recognize the drug testing suspensions worldwide? We’ll have a lot more on this story on next week’s show. On this week’s show, we discuss the fallout from PRIDE’s LV event (what the future of the company is, what the company is attempting to do that no other major fighting league has ever accomplished, reaction to The Echo Chamber article). Also, we have a news-of-the-world segment previewing the dream match that everyone has wanted to see, Mike Tyson vs. Tom Jones. Plus the world famous grab bag segment. A very entertaining show this week.

One thing about Yoshihiro Akiyama. He’s Korean, although he spent a lot of his life in Japan- I think he was born there as well. That means that legally and culturally he’s classified as “Zainichi” which from what I understand means “foreigner who’s decided to stay.” There are different kinds of Zainichi, for instance, “Zainichi Begun” refers to the American armed forces, and technically “Zainichi Chosenjin” refers to the Koreans. But when the Japanese use the word “Zainichi” they are probably referring to the Koreans in Japan. He tries to identify with both; he has a Korean flag patch on one shoulder of his gi. I wonder how the Japanese audience feel about him tho.

Who does erin blow to stay on this show?

Who does erin blow to stay on this show?

    Obviously, not you.

  4. Allen says:

    Oh snap! Wicked comeback Zach!

But, seriously. Who is she blowing to be on here? Seems like a nice girl, but she can’t talk to save her life, and has little knowledge of MMA.

I look at everyone who is involved on the show as having a certain role. Jeff brings a legitimate background as a former agent of MMA fighters, plus trains/practices in BJJ. Luke is what I call a ‘tweener’ as someone who has a background in both pro-wrestling and MMA who understands the crossover between the two industries. Erin brings a female perspective to the show, and she (to me) is the perfect example of the casual/semi-hardcore type of fan that UFC has brought to the table. The more she watches and the more she learns about the history of the business, the more confident she will be. Give her a chance.

They are great people to work with. No problems whatsoever. It’s a very comfortable environment. Nobody tells each other what to say, so everyone has different thoughts and opinions on the various promotions going in. I wish there were more sites doing MMA shows online. The field right now is pretty small. Outside of a few shows (Sherdog, ours, Fightworks podcast with Caleb), there really aren’t many serious shows on MMA. If there are, someone please link me to them so I can link them.

  6. Erin says:

Sorry, but I’m simply too busy blowing Zach to bone (heh) up on all the precise details that being an MMA fan demands. I’ll try to do better in the future, oh bringer of MMA knowledge.

  7. MMA T-Shirts says:

    Tough crowd today huh 🙂

I’m just listening to the show – havent really heard Erin yet I dont think. I like all you guys and like the show in general, even if I disagree with some things you say. Only thing I can remember Erin saying that I tought was irksome was the comment about BJ / his ribs last week.

Anyway, who cares, it’s all good 🙂

P.s. Nastula is never going to be the Rickson of Judo – he’s way better than Rickson 🙂

    Nastula’s opponent’s joint record – W66 L11 (4 winning records).
    Rickson’s opponent’s joint record – W63 L49 (3 winning & 5 losing records).

  8. Zack says:

Very disrespectful thing to say about Erin. I appreciate her newfound enthusiasm for the sport, but it is frustrating listening to her sometimes. It’s hard to take her seriously when her first time watching Noguiera was last year in his fight vs. Tamura. There’s a lot of history missing there, and unless she wants to start cramming and watching old DVDs, she’s not going to have a very good perspective on the game.

Like I said….I like her enthusiasm, and I think she’s perfect for doing TUF writeups (cool different writing style and perspective), but she’s the main reason why I stopped listening to the radio show.

    My two cents.

  9. Frankie J says:

Erin is the pits, and is the main reason I dont bother with the show much anymore, at least that execrable MMA snark site is gone…

That sites’ forum had the most annoyingly ill-informed yet still opinionated members this side of Sherdick. Nothing worse than a PW fan who thinks he knows the fight game after watching a series of TUF.

I’m sure Erin is a lovely girl, but I if I wanted to hear casual fans’ opinions, I would ask my girlfriend.

But the “who does she blow” comments are just rude and out of line.

Which also brings me to a big problem I have with the censorship in the comments on this site, why on earth does valid critisim (of Zach) get deleted, yet
this “who does she blow” stuff gets thru?

  10. JimmieDeanSausage says:

    I agree Erin is awful.

If she stuck to the TUF reviews I could tolerate her but when she comments on things beyond that (Pride etc) it is a truly frustrating listening experience.

Beyond the fact that she seems to relish in the fact that she is ignorant to the worldwide MMA game, every show she disrespects fighters worldwide with her idiotic statements simply because they don’t fight in the UFC.

I have met Erin’s type many times in the music scene. She is little more than a UFC fangirl|groupie, which is a fine thing to be if that’s your prerogative, but please don’t comment on Pride or for fuck’s sake don’t discuss UFC vs. non-UFC theoretical fighter matchups.

Please Please Please guys sort this out.

I truly enjoy this show and I think you will be hard pressed to find any intelligent MMA fight fan who can stomach the inane drivel that Erin is putting out.

I avoid Sherdog and come here for a reason you know 😉

    Thanks

  11. JimmieDeanSausage says:

O and the fucking BJ Penn comments that MMA Tishirts refrences….my god man!

First she comments how there is rampant debate as to if Penn gassed or was injured.

Then she blasts Penn, basically saying is making excuses, for releasing the medical report (and I read it was the UFC that released them it Penn but I dunno)

Ummm I know I sure like to know what really happened in the fight and resolving such lingering, often endless debate, for example gassing vs. a rib injury during a bout is a welcome event indeed.

BJ Pen certainly wasn’t making excuses and In public has done nothing but praise Hughes for a good fight

Can Erin even comprehend the pain and overall debilitating effects of a rib fracture with soft tissue tear?

Who is Erin to criticize BJ Penn in the manner she did, it was fucking way off base and just plain ignorant.

  12. Erin says:

When did I EVER say he was making excuses? My entire point is that one way or another, he lost the match because he over-exerted himself. If he worked too hard and gassed out or he worked too hard and screwed up his ribs, then it’s the same thing to me. I also thought that the fact that BJ felt the need to justify himself by posting the medical report instead of just stating what the injury turned out to be seemed a bit overkill.

I don’t beleive that is anyway a criticism. I think you guys may be getting a bit too sensitive about other people talking shit about him and projecting it into places that it isn’t.

  13. JimmieDeanSausage says:

    your analysis is shit

  14. Rich says:

Can someone actually legitimately answer this question for me, on second thought I probably already know the answer but let me just put it out there.

Why if you don’t listen to this show, do you feel compelled to right multiple paragraphs complaining about it. Obviously you don’t care for the way the radio show is put together, so why even bother? I get that this is the internet and everyone who doesn’t think like you think is wrong but to me it seems the most logical thing to do if you don’t like something is just to not have anything to do with it.

Also, Frankie J, it’s good to know you’re still bitching about all that shit months and months later. Dude, I’m sorry I burst your little bubble and had to explain that the reason the UFC exist is as a vehicle to sell Pay Per Views, DVD’s, and Various forms of merchandise and therefore it’s no different than any pro wrestling or boxing organization.

  15. Erin says:

Ok Jimmie Dean, instead of just posting a statement with nothing behind it, explain why my analysis is shit.

  16. BSP says:

Good heavens, it looks like open season on Erin. That’s a real shame… I enjoy her presence on the show. Sure, sometimes she says something that drives me nuts, but so does Zach and Luke (I tend to be on the same page as Jeff). So what? One of the nice things about the show is the variety of backgrounds and perspectives. The show wouldn’t be nearly as interesting if I agreed with everything that everyone said.

At least you don’t send me death threats.

  18. Luke says:

This is pretty despicable. If the criticisms of Erin were legitimate, and done politely this would be fine. But the innuendo and ad-hominem attacks are completely off-base.

We want everyone on the show to have a slightly different role, and everyone brings a different perspective because we all discovered the sport at different times. If we all had the same perspective as Jeff, or Zach, or me, the show would be boring.

Legitimate criticism is fine. But leave out the shit. Its completely unnecessary.

  19. Zach Arnold says:

I am closing this thread (for right now) — not because criticism isn’t allowed, but because I want cooler heads to prevail at the moment.
