MMA comes to Nova Scotia

The Chronicle Herald newspaper has an article series about an upcoming MMA event in Halifax, Nova Scotia on April 29th (the same day as the proposed IFL show in Atlantic City, New Jersey). The newspaper has three articles (here, here, and here) that put a slightly negative slant on the upcoming event.

In some regards, it’s warranted. Having a 53-year old ex-boxer in an MMA fight is not a good idea.

One of the authors of the articles is Chris Cochrane. His e-mail is [email protected] if you would like to send (non-threatening) feedback to him.

The real story here should be the boxing commission regulating the event and putting boxing officials (not experienced in MMA officiating) in charge of officiating the show. That, and the commission’s admission that if they didn’t get involved in the process that they feared losing money because the shows would take place on Canadian land not under local jurisdiction/laws.

  1. Stephan says:

Unfortunately, typical reaction for people that dont understand the techniques involved.

I think we need to drop the “ultimate fighting” names in general, which really draws that image and instead really emphasize the Mixed Martial Arts aspect…people seem to react better to that.

  2. Tomer says:

Considering that numerous fighters have been banned from fighting for their protection at old ages (Bob Fitzsimmons, Evander Holyfield and so forth), I really don’t see what’s the problem with suspending his license/refusing to issue a license due to potential health risks after getting beaten up in Boxing in his last for points to the point of having a near Emile Griffith-Benny Paret III experience in his fourth to last fight (getting TKOd in the 5th), then getting KOd 3 times straight. Yes, it was 22 years ago, but I would be really surprised if he didn’t suffer from some post concussion syndrome at the very least that would justify a medical suspension.

  3. […] A few days ago, we linked to several newspaper articles in the Chronicle Herald newspaper (based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada). It was an article series on an upcoming MMA event being regulated by the local boxing commission. I noted that at least one of the articles (which was more or less an op-ed) was negative against the event taking place. The other two articles were written by Monty Mosher, who was doing “straight” reporting of the facts. […]

  4. […] An update to the recently controversy regarding the Nova Scotia boxing commission regulating their first MMA show in Halifax. Today, the Canadian Press reports that members of the Nova Scotia boxing community are distancing themselves from “brutal cage fighting.” The report also states that Boxing Canada, the body regulating amateur boxing, will suspend any boxer participating in MMA fights. HALIFAX (CP) – Nova Scotia’s amateur boxing community is distancing itself from an upcoming cage-fighting competition critics say is little more than a legalized dog fight. […]

  5. […] There was a level of negative feedback for the proposed MMA event in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 4/29. Then, Boxing Canada stepped in and announced their opposition to the event (mainly because it would hurt a local boxing card scheduled in May in Halifax). And now, according to The Chronicle Herald in Halifax, city councilman Bob Harvey is proposing a ban on MMA in Halifax on Tuesday. […]
