Rich Franklin medical update

By Zach Arnold | March 8, 2006

Print Friendly and PDF

By Zach Arnold

The UFC says he is out for 6-8 months due to a broken left hand.

Question of the day: Do you classify this injury as just part of the game, or does the equipment that fighters use (i.e. gloves) need to be improved?

  1. My vote is it was a fluke injury so not ground to improve the gloves allthough we have seen some eyepoking with fingergloves e.g. the GSP versus Penn in the first round.

I do believe they are the best thing for grapling. Also I do not want to see more protected gloves if that means further risk of head injuries as in boxing.

  2. Andrew says:

I’d say it’s a part of the game. Protect the hands better and you put the heads at bigger risk. One of the big rules in any combat sport is “Protect yourself at all times” if someone hits you and breaks your jaw that is part of the game, and if you hit someone and break your hand that is as well.

Any injury sucks, but the goal in there is to injure the other guy….

  3. James says:

I expect that when he broke his hand initially, it wasn’t that bad.

However, continuing to throw punches with that hand is probably what made it into such a serious injury.

As such, the damage to his hand was a personal decision, and not a result of an equipment issue.

  4. Luke A. says:

If you’re talking about the broken hand only, then yes, its part of the game. Hands break because they were not designed to punch things, period. Most people who punch things often enough will eventually get a break of some kind or another.
