HERO’s 9/16 Yokohama Arena presser

By Zach Arnold | September 16, 2007

First interesting item is that Shaolin failed making weight the first time around, being 1.3 kg over the weight limit for his fight against JZ Calvan.

The promotion announced that Rickson Gracie will appear at the 9/17 Yokohama Arena event.

The official match-order for tomorrow’s show:

  1. Middleweight Tournament reserve fight: Kazuyuki Miyata vs. Harvey Harra
  2. Middleweight Tournament: Kaoru Uno vs. Andre Dida
  3. Middleweight Tournament: JZ Calvan vs. Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro
  4. Minowaman vs. Kevin Casey
  5. Yoon Dong-Sik vs. Zelg “Little Mirko” Galesic
  6. Melvin Manhoef vs. Fabio Silva
  7. Sergey Kharitonov vs. Alistair Overeem
  8. Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Katsuyori Shibata

Yes! This is going to be an awesome event, I truly hope.

Something is telling me that Rickson X Funaki might be a possibility… Mark my very tentative and not at all firm words!

Unless something weird happens (like Misaki winning the GP)…. The winner of the “Middleweight” Grand Prix is Top 3 in the world at Lightweight. At least in my book. The JZ/Shaolin fight is big.

That’s a nice card. I have a stupid question - is Minowaman just Minowa?

  4. September 16th, 2007 at 6:03 am Adam Underhill Says:

The possibility of Rickson Funaki really is a dream come true. Shibata Saku will be a very interesting fight; both with their pro-wrestling roots. Uno Dida and the return of KID are both exciting fights to look out for. I think Kharitonov will be running the Heavyweight division for a long time. Is there any video available from the press conference?

Why are we even talking about Rickson v Funaki in 2007?

  10. September 16th, 2007 at 10:09 am Zack Says:

The stream starts at midnight PST.

  11. September 16th, 2007 at 10:29 am Smoogy Says:

Dida is a great bet as an underdog vs. Uno. Depending on how the other side of the tourney goes he could shock everyone.

HERO’S is already building towards a Sakuraba vs. Funaki fight on NYE as a secure backup plan depending on what Rickson does. I wouldn’t be shocked if it ended up being Rickson vs. Yoshida, that might be the biggest money fight you could possibly do in Japan.

how can I watch this in the states?

  13. September 16th, 2007 at 11:44 am David Says:

Rickson Yoshida would be a GREAT draw in Japan but I think that it would be a little too one sided. 400-0 Rickson would take that fight easily :)

I’m really psyched for this event. Its going to be good. This is the first Heros card that gives me hope that theyre going to try to pick up where pride left off. Sergei on the card.. golden.
