Crippling MMA in Hawaii?

Wednesday, February 15th, 2006

By Zach Arnold The Honolulu Advertiser has an important update regarding Hawaii’s state legislature attempting to change the rules for promoting MMA on the island. The newspaper reports on a new bill that promoters and fighters say will devastate the local MMA scene: HB3223, passed out of the state House Tourism and Culture Committee yesterday, […]

UFC: Leaving Home

Wednesday, February 15th, 2006

By: Luke Nicholson  After UFC 57, and the rumoured early sellout of UFC 59 in Anaheim, I started thinking that maybe UFC should start running some shows outside of Las Vegas. With the increasing exposure UFC is provided on SpikeTV, coupled with the recent coverage by a couple mainstream outlets (Sports Illustrated, and TheScore [in […]

Interview with Yuki Nakai

Wednesday, February 15th, 2006

Sherdog has posted an interview with Yuki Nakai. For those who don’t remember, Nakai took second place in the 1995 Japan Vale Tudo where he lost to Rickson Gracie. This is also the event documented in the movie Choke. Nakai has been instrumental in bringing BJJ to Japan and currently runs several dojos.

Iowa’s MMA scene faces challenges

Wednesday, February 15th, 2006

By Zach Arnold The Des Moines Register newspaper this morning reports that there is an effort to deregulate the MMA industry in the state of Iowa. Furthermore, legislation is being created to outlaw amateurs from fighting in MMA, and also legislation to have fighters pay an annual $1,000 license fee. In addition to Iowa, Hawaii […]

Nogueira’s future in PRIDE

Tuesday, February 14th, 2006

By Zach Arnold In a recent interview in Brazil, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira was asked about what his future in DSE would be. He was asked specifically what his future after the Kiyoshi Tamura fight would be, and what he thought the best creative direction would be for him. His response was very interesting.

MMA Weekly loses top writer

Monday, February 13th, 2006

By Zach Arnold Ken Pishna, accomplished MMA writer (and his wife is a photographer, too) and mainstay at MMA Weekly, has left that web site. Ken is now the director of MMA relations for the American Championship Fighting group (based out of Denver, Colorado). For informational purposes, I am posting the first PR release for […]

Media Survival 101 – Part 1

Sunday, February 12th, 2006

By Zach Arnold If you’ve noticed, the amount of “big” MMA web sites in terms of media coverage is smaller than you would suspect. As the Internet boom continues, more and more smaller sites are starting to pop up. However, it seems that the information in the industry is consolidated to such a small base […]

UFC 57 Numbers

Saturday, February 11th, 2006

By: Luke Nicholson It looks like UFC fell just a little short of the projected, 3.8 to 4 million dollar gate, but still did very well. According to the NSAC, the show drew 10,301 paid, while grossing $3,382,400. I think both numbers are very strong, but something that caught my eye right away, was the […]

Jack is back… with tripe

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

By Zach Arnold A few days ago, I wrote a rebuttal to a Jack Encarnacao article about the similarities (or lack thereof) between the MMA & pro-wrestling industries. Well, Jack is back… with more. So am I.

UFC Light Heavyweight Division

Wednesday, February 8th, 2006

Chuck Liddell’s second round KO of mixed martial arts legend Randy Couture at UFC 57 solidified his hold on the top spot at 205lbs. in the UFC. Couture’s emotional farewell after the fight marked the end of an era. Randy has been a major player in the push towards making mixed martial arts a mainstream […]

Valor Fighting: Showdown 2/3

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

By Erin Bucknell Last Friday, February 3rd a couple of friends and myself attended that Valor show out at Cache Creek Resort in Brooks, CA. All in all, it was a pretty good show, especially for being a smaller show. I’d estimate the crowd at about 2,000, which is fairly decent considering the fact that […]

UFC’s youth movement

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

By Zach Arnold I was reading Jason Vondersmith’s article in the Portland Tribune titled Beaten again, Couture walks away and one item really stuck out at me: “We knew Randy would try to lay back and come hard at me, make me overcommit,” said Liddell, 36. “I just tried to move around and pick my […]
