UFC’s youth movement

By Zach Arnold | February 7, 2006

By Zach Arnold

I was reading Jason Vondersmith’s article in the Portland Tribune titled Beaten again, Couture walks away and one item really stuck out at me:

“We knew Randy would try to lay back and come hard at me, make me overcommit,” said Liddell, 36. “I just tried to move around and pick my shots. He lets me stand in front of him that long, eventually I was going to get him.”

For all the talk of Couture being old at 42, Liddell’s 36 – a mere 6 years behind him in age. In the fight game, that might be a large difference. However, Chuck isn’t a spring chicken any more.

Who will end up as his main, younger rival?

Sidenotes

Richard Abowitz on a Los Angeles Times blog has a short report about the UFC 57 event.

The Des Moines Register newspaper has a great article about Pat Miletich.

Babalu? I would like to see a rematch with Rampage. Somehow, somewhere, that fight should be made.

  2. Luke A. says:

The major media seems to be covering the MMA with a bit more respect recently and thats a good thing. Not long ago I called several people at the Las Vegas Star trying to get either a retraction or correction to a negative story about the UFC and its fans.

  3. Daniel Columbus says:

Everyone’s saying Babalu, but wouldn’t it be stupid to put a potential big money fight with the Tito/Forrest winner in danger by pitting Chuck against Babalu?

  4. Bryce says:

Yep, I agree. I could just see Babalu being the man who could potentially become a rival for Chuck out of the LHW’s in UFC. I suppose Tito could be a good rival for Chuck since he is very mainstream and marketable and I don’t think Forrest could be that guy, yet anyhow. As far as fight quality, I think Babalu is that guy by far.
