UFC: Leaving Home
Wednesday, February 15th, 2006By: Luke Nicholson After UFC 57, and the rumoured early sellout of UFC 59 in Anaheim, I started thinking that maybe UFC should start running some shows outside of Las Vegas. With the increasing exposure UFC is provided on SpikeTV, coupled with the recent coverage by a couple mainstream outlets (Sports Illustrated, and TheScore [in […]

Iowa’s MMA scene faces challenges
Wednesday, February 15th, 2006By Zach Arnold The Des Moines Register newspaper this morning reports that there is an effort to deregulate the MMA industry in the state of Iowa. Furthermore, legislation is being created to outlaw amateurs from fighting in MMA, and also legislation to have fighters pay an annual $1,000 license fee. In addition to Iowa, Hawaii […]
Boxing: Japan’s next golden child
Tuesday, February 14th, 2006By Zach Arnold One of the things that often dominates coverage of MMA & pro-wrestling on slow days in the “battle” section of newspapers is boxing. 19-year old Koki Kameda (9-0, ranked #8 by the WBC in the 112-pound Flyweight division) was scheduled to face Edgar Sosa of Mexico on 3/8 in Tokyo at Ryogoku […]

Japan, America, Pro-Wrestling & Mass Media
Tuesday, February 14th, 2006Why Japanese wrestling promotions have it easy compared to the US, and how promotions can grow with technology By David Ditch There’s no business quite like the professional wrestling business. Beyond aspects like the content of shows, kayfabe, a thorough lack of established practices and an inability to unionize, wrestling also has a unique situation […]

Monday, February 13th, 2006By Zach Arnold Ken Pishna, accomplished MMA writer (and his wife is a photographer, too) and mainstay at MMA Weekly, has left that web site. Ken is now the director of MMA relations for the American Championship Fighting group (based out of Denver, Colorado). For informational purposes, I am posting the first PR release for […]
Media Survival 101 – Part 1
Sunday, February 12th, 2006By Zach Arnold If you’ve noticed, the amount of “big” MMA web sites in terms of media coverage is smaller than you would suspect. As the Internet boom continues, more and more smaller sites are starting to pop up. However, it seems that the information in the industry is consolidated to such a small base […]
UFC 57 Numbers
Saturday, February 11th, 2006By: Luke Nicholson It looks like UFC fell just a little short of the projected, 3.8 to 4 million dollar gate, but still did very well. According to the NSAC, the show drew 10,301 paid, while grossing $3,382,400. I think both numbers are very strong, but something that caught my eye right away, was the […]
Stream of Unconsciousness
Thursday, February 9th, 2006Why the major wrestling web sites are ignoring the biggest change in professional wrestling By Sheldon Goldberg Internet television is quite possibly the biggest change in professional wrestling since television itself. It’s use in wrestling is something that I introduced. (Related link: Missing out on the big picture.)
Jack is back… with tripe
Thursday, February 9th, 2006By Zach Arnold A few days ago, I wrote a rebuttal to a Jack Encarnacao article about the similarities (or lack thereof) between the MMA & pro-wrestling industries. Well, Jack is back… with more. So am I.
Fight Opinion Radio: Episode 6
Thursday, February 9th, 2006This past weekend was the NFL’s Super Bowl in Detroit. However, last weekend was also the Granddaddy of all weekends if you were an MMA fan. With shows in Japan (MARS at Ariake Colosseum, K-1 at Saitama Super Arena, DEEP at Korakuen Hall), America (UFC 57 in Las Vegas, Valor Fighting in California), and the […]
