Joe Rogan: BJ Penn has 10 more years of fighting experience than Rory MacDonald, OK?

By Zach Arnold | August 22, 2012

Print Friendly and PDF

I guess this counts for insight now?

It’s basically a three minute video of Joe Rogan trying to sell the argument that having more experience is better than being younger & less injured… except he does a 180 half way through the video to make the other case.

Consider this an attempt to try to push to the fans that Dan Henderson has better than a 15% chance of winning the September 1st fight against Jon Jones… or the fact that Rory MacDonald shouldn’t be a 3-to-1 favorite over BJ Penn for their December 8th Seattle fight on Fox broadcast TV.

Speaking of curious, Jon Jones has been squawking about how he doesn’t want to fight Lyoto Machida because there’s not enough financial upside for him to do so. This statement comes from a man who just signed a sponsorship deal with Nike. Jon does seem to have a little bit of LeBron James-style PR cluelessness in him when it comes to the things that come out of his mouth…

On the bright side, at least he hasn’t been getting sued at the rate that Mark Burnett has been lately in regards to money issues. That’s a quick way to go broke.

It is kind of sad to see Jones & UFC embrace the concept of building a fight with Chael Sonnen right after Anderson Silva took care of business in Las Vegas a couple of months ago. Jones is ripping into Dan Henderson’s testosterone usage and he would also rip into Sonnen’s use of the magical T.

What a great image for Mixed Martial Arts in 2012 to be dealing with a bunch of big name fighters who use testosterone and to have such usage be used to market fights. Wonderful.

So your complaint is that they’re making fights where someone is a favorite? And discussing the advantages and disadvantages the other fighter has? Can you name someone Jon Jones wouldn’t open as a huge favorite over at this point? Can you suggest better booking for Rory MacDonald?

“It is kind of sad to see Jones & UFC embrace the concept of building a fight with Chael Sonnen”

Jones and Dana White have both come out and publicly stated that Chael isn’t going to jump the line by being a loudmouth. Did you deliberately leave this out of your article or are you just a few days behind?

” Jones is ripping into Dan Henderson’s testosterone usage and he would also rip into Sonnen’s use of the magical T.”

So Jones is picking up the pitchfork to join your crusade, yet you seem…not thrilled? Why? You’ve been pushing this issue down our throats for months now, why aren’t you excited someone else is bringing it up? Months ago you were waving the “nobody is covering this issue” flag.

Lots of grumbling, not very much research, and nothing added to the discussion. The amount of time you’re spending on CSAC office politics is obviously having an adverse effect on the rest of the site. Can you put half the effort into your MMA articles that you’re putting into your office drama articles?

I don’t think Zach was making a stink about these fights being made so much that Joe Rogan sounded like a tool with his argument in favor of Penn with the experience advantage. I guess hype has to be done one way or the other…

Not too different than the hype for Jack Johnson/Jim Jeffries, or many other young vs. old man fights throughout the last century or so. It’s a faulty argument, as Zach pointed out (experience means very little if you are broken down, out of shape, unmotivated, etc. Not saying Penn is any of those things, but he is probably the first two), but it has worked on “less informed” fans.

        • Jason Harris says:

So rather than say “I think so and so is going to win because of X” he gives the advantages that the different fighters bring into the ring. States that being a veteran means you have an experience advantage that’s huge, but you also have to deal with the physical decline of being older….

Complain that he’s stating the obvious to what an informed fan would already be thinking, OK. But how you got that it somehow did a 180 midway (huh?) or was just trying to hype up a squash match (huh?) is ridiculous.

I think Penn’s an underdog but I’m also pretty surprised that an MMA writer is catching “last fight syndrome” and completely writing a guy off based on a couple of fights.

  2. 45 Huddle says:

I would be shocked if Dan Henderson, Nate Diaz, or BJ Penn win their upcoming fights.

    • Jason Harris says:

Nate is coming in only a slight underdog. I wouldn’t be surprised if Dan or BJ won their fights, either, although I expect them to both lose.

      • Chuck says:

Either? Huddle said he would be shocked if any of those three win their fights. I don’t see any of them winning their fights. But I do think that Hendo will give Jones the best fight of his yet.

  3. david m says:

Nate is going to whoop Ben Henderson’s ass. Dan Henderson is going to get massacred. Nobody knows with BJ. If he is motivated and in shape, he will win. Rory’s standup is terrible.

    • Nepal says:

I wonder why you think Nate will whoop Ben’s ass??? Ben can negate Nate’s jitz. Ben’s leg kicks can mung up Nate’s legs. Ben’s a stronger, wrestler type. I can’t see how Nate can win this. Even Rory with his marginal stand up out struck Nate. This fight seem’s in Ben’s favour no matter where it goes.

  4. Jason Harris says:

Apparently my longer comment was deleted but in summation….Why is it bad for Jones to be anti TRT?

Jones and Dana White both have said that Chael isn’t near a title shot with a win over Forrest. How is that “embracing the concept”?

  5. The Gaijin says:

Any truth to the rumours that Hendo is injured?

…also, I will die laughing if TRT is somehow involved in the main event getting scrapped.
