Video: A heartwarming moment between James Toney & Ken Shamrock
By Zach Arnold | June 26, 2011

The kind of low-rent press conference you’ve always dreamed of seeing. Horrible trash talking between the two, Toney’s scruffy beard, Ken looking whiter than ever & more like a pensioner than The World’s Most Dangerous Man, ‘seconds’ that look rather unique, all taking place in some high-ceiling room at the IFC Gym in Van Nuys, California with echo-y microphones that make it sound like they are talking inside Moby Dick’s stomach.
I don’t know who is promoting this fight or where it’s taking place (supposedly in late September/early October), but the idea of a ‘reality TV show’ crew following around Toney is going to be gold compared to the actual fight. Will the TV show subtitle every word he says like Zuffa did in the preview video packages to hype up Toney’s fight with Randy Couture?
According to Pro MMA Now, this fight will be using Gary Shaw-style rules:
The bout will take place Sept. 23 in El Paso, Texas, and be fought under modified MMA rules in which a 30-second ground rule will be implemented mandating the referee stand both fighters up should they remain on the ground more than 30 seconds. (8 rounds of 3 mins each with the ’30 second shot clock’ ground rule.)
Meanwhile, Toney is also continuing his taunts against David Haye & Wladimir Klitschko in rather expected fashion.
Not surprisingly, unfortunately, a lot of big boxing web sites have focused on this circus fight and are spinning this as an opportunity for Toney to even his ‘MMA record’ at 1-1 if/when he KOs Shamrock.

Ummm… UGH!
What more can I say about this damn near atrocity?
Hell, with these “special modified rules” & all, it won’t actually count as a real fight to me no matter what happens.
And this is coming from a pretty much career long rabid James Toney fan. Someone who’s been following his career on a fight by fight basis ever since I first saw him in a six rounder on ESPN’s TOP RANK BOXING back in the late ’80s.
He was my absolute fav fighter for the better part of two decades.
I stayed with him all through the inexplicably bad performances, the mental meltdowns, the episodes of pissing hot…
But, the whole Couture thing last year was the last straw.
It made me FINALLY face the fact that though he’s a brilliant boxer, he’s really not a bright man. Far from it.
And THIS “thing” with Shamrock is just a joke.
I mean, DAMN, if he’s going to fight MMA, then fight MMA, not some patchwork hybrid nonsense that doesn’t count as anything. Well… I suppose you could call it an exhibition. But that’s it.
This is epic. I can’t wait to see Ken throw James around like a rag doll for 30 second intervals. I expect both of them to have heart attacks before the end of the first round, LOL.
Hahahah.
Just so sad. The worst part is James can still legitimately call himself a champion.
I think I called Randy Couture vs. James Toney a freakshow.
Which means I’m not sure what to call this “fight”…. Need to start making up terms for this stuff….
Jesus Christ.
Also, will the fight be taking place in the same church basement they held this press conference?
Rumours swirling that (a) this was a totally agreed upon work (looked like it, so not very earth shattering) and (b) this fight is going to be a work and Shamrock has agreed to take a submission LOSS to Toney (now that’s tinfoil hat right there).
Wouldn’t be a surprising for all of that to be true.
..never seen more done fighters at one table. i predict that this fight will never happen. freak-show
