Tim Sylvia and Cecil Peoples, two peas in a pod of ridiculousness

By Zach Arnold | August 14, 2010

Print Friendly and PDF

If you have not heard the news from Friday, Tim Sylvia showed up for his “PWP Heavyweight Champion” fight against Paul Buentello (252 pounds) at… 274 pounds? (According to the press release… I hope the PR person meant 264…) The weight limit is 265 pounds. This fight is on the War on the Mainland show at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, California.

‘War on the Mainland’ press conference round up

Former UFC champion Tim Sylvia talks Brock Lesnar, why fans dislike him, and leaving Zuffa

As if that wasn’t bad enough, here’s Josh Gross aptly describing the infamous Cecil Peoples working a King of the Cage fight last night:

Daniel Cormier about to fight Tony Johnson on HDNet. Not sure about the choice by Cormier, AKA to take this fight on such short notice.

OMG this Cecil Peoples!!! “You’re fighting for the most prestigious belt in the world, King of the Cage heavyweight championship. … ”

Cormier wins the most prestigious belt in MMA by RNC. History folks. History

In a battle of KOTC vs. UFC heavyweight belts, Cecil Peoples scores it 50-44 KOTC.

Other questions and notes

I had conflicting reports on the movie The Expendables last night within five minutes of each other. One person said Steve Austin was great and Randy Couture was OK. The other person flipped the descriptions. Both made note that Nogueira was in the movie. So, I’m looking for reviews out there from any of you who see the movie. Let’s hear it.

I know this isn’t a normal question, but is there some sort of magical list out there in which you can find out which fighters are represented by which agents? The reason I ask this question is because I don’t deal with agents as standard protocol for news or anything else and yet I know that if I have to interview a fighter that dealing with the agents is usually the only method of success. And yet… there are many agents who, in principle, I simply refuse to deal with no matter what the circumstances are. So, if you can help me out in this process, I would greatly appreciate a playbook on this matter.

What is this, Fight Opinion on Twitter and Fight Opinion on Facebook? Outrageous. BTW, if you have any ideas on how to somehow make my list of 5,000+ friends on the ghetto known as MySpace useful, please let me know if there’s some way to revitalize that account. It’s so slow and clunky to use and I’m struggling to figure out ways how to reconnect with people there or at least tie it in with every other platform I’m on.

There’s an MMA event in the St. Louis area at Family Arena on Saturday called Fight Me MMA and Jesse Finney is getting lots of local publicity. The Post-Dispatch claims that the arena has already sold at around 10,000 — 20% comps (2,000) and 30% paid at $5 tickets (3,000) with the rest being paid at higher ticket prices. MMA Mania has some notes about the bonus structure for fighters at the show.

Speaking of super-sized, there is a 27-fight card today in Brockton, MA. (Jack Encarnacao territory) with 11 pro-fights and 16 amateur fights at Campanelli Stadium (where the Brockton Rox play independent league baseball).

The Montreal Gazette published an article from the Vancouver Province talking about medical doctors in British Columbia passing a resolution to get MMA banned throughout Canada. Pay attention to this story.

  1. Jonathan Snowden says:

Sylvia and Buentello is being contested at a catchweight of 275. I don’t think this was ever announced but Tim mentioned it last week.

    • Zach Arnold says:

So how can it be a ‘title’ fight under the Unified rules?

      • A) Super heavyweight title.

        B) The promotion doesn’t even really care to have guidelines for choosing fighters or maintenance of the title, just like 10,000,000 other promoters don’t with their belts. Seriously, who the fuck cares about this meaningless vapor title?

        • 45 Huddle says:

The only way Tim Sylvia’s weight does matter is for his future. Whether he wins or loses, by coming in above 265 pounds, he is showing his unwillingness to take the sport seriously.

        • He’s just trolling around waiting for Strikeforce to sign him right now. Let’s be real.

        • 45 Huddle says:

Well, they did sign Sergei, so anything is possible.

        • There’s a bunch of Sylvia fights I’d be happy to see as long as they weren’t on PPV. I wouldn’t complain about Sylvia/Barnett, even if its kinda meaningless. Or Ricco/Sylvia II. Or Sergei/Sylvia. I could think of more even.

    • Jonathan says:

I have no doubt that Tim Sylvia does not take this sport seriously. I think most people, if not all, would agree.

  2. Enormoshows aren’t really new. I know in MI there’s a promoter that’s run two night tournaments packed with 50-60 fights. There’s been a few shows in Jersey too that are amateur events with the billing of 40 fights for $20, if I remember correctly.

    • Mr. Roadblock says:

Usually they make the amateur guys, and sometimes some of the pros too, sell tickets to the show. It’s a money making scheme.

  3. bundt says:

zach lets start a band we could host the demos on myspace.

  4. Fluyid says:

Shane Carwin fought here locally a time or two a few years back (2006, I think) and he was way more ripped and lean than he is now.

    Check this out:

    • Fluyid says:

Should have added that this in relation to this news story: http://www.mmafighting.com/2010/08/14/federal-court-links-shane-carwin-to-steroids-conspiracy-case/

You can google 2006 Shane Carwin fights and see any differences in physique if you’re so inclined.

      • 45 Huddle says:

Wouldn’t shock me if he either got off the roids or switched over to HGH.

Sadly, people will start saying Lesnar is on roids now despite the fact that he shows no real signs of it.

I rewatched Silva/Sonnen again today before I deleted it off my DVR. Sonnen’s back had tons of acne. I believe Souza’s did at his last SF fight as well.

A lot of fighters are going to have some low sex drives when they retire, that is for sure.

        • Mark says:

There’s more signs to steroid use than just backne. And actually lots of people who eat too much protein get backne, so that’s practically every fighter ever who could get a back and shoulders breakout.

I don’t think anybody is surprised Carwin was involved with steroids. I’m not saying he’s currently using, but of all the fighters in modern UFC, he certainly looks the most unnaturally huge. At least Lesnar has more size and of a frame to carry the muscle.

      • edub says:

Shitty cardio is also a side effect…

  5. Nicholai says:

I’m happy that MMA is getting regulated in Ontario maybe it will have a trickeldown affect in Saskatchewan. It would sure beat having to drive to Alberta or Manitoba just to watch live MMA fights.
