Wait, the 135 Women’s Title fight isn’t even the main event?

You know I’m a fan of Strikeforce and I defend them a lot but sticking a title fight on a Challenger’s card in the semi main event is possibly one of the most retarded things I’ve ever seen. Zach you’ve written a lot about how the titles in Strikeforce don’t have much value and while I would argue in certain cases, this is just absolutely bogus and completely makes their 135 women’s belt look meaningless.

It’s worth pointing out that they’d never put a men’s title fight on a challenger card in the semi-main. If Strikeforce is going to make a legitimate effort at being the center of women’s MMA (which they’ve slipped at drastically) they have to treat their women with some respect as well as the titles they fight and contend for.

Bodog has Modafferi as a +350 underdog. Does that make since to anyone else?

  3. Maxomillion Solaris says:

Awesome powerbomb. Kaufman fights like Maurice Smith and Rampage.

  4. Zack says:

That was a really fun card. Alex Sean…I understand your complaint, but you do know the last time Kaufman was the main event EVERYONE in the building left? Strikeforce still caters to the live crowd. It’s not good on TV or for a city to have everyone walk out on a main event.

  5. Steve4192 says:

    Wow.

I couldn’t even remember the last time I had seen a female MMA fight end in an ‘out cold’ KO and we suddenly get two in the last couple of weeks from Frausto & Kaufmann. I wonder if the increased violence in the finishes will help or hurt women’s MMA.

PS – I’m still waiting for Cyborg’s supposed ‘KO power’ to actually put someone out. For all the talk about how powerful her striking is, she wins with overwhelming volume rather than raw power.

    • Mark says:

I thought it was a pretty entertaining fight. Roxy is really likable from the interviews I’ve seen & read with her so I was pulling for her to get the upset, but you cannot deny Kaufman’s skills as the best women’s MMA fighter today.

Out cold KOs would probably hurt more than help. Remember how Elite had the first CBS Carano fight stopped when Kaitlin Young’s face was all busted up. People don’t like seeing women seriously hurt and that’s among the top reasons their division won’t take off. So instead of having a “Wow, that slam was as good as what Rampage and Matt Hughes have pulled off” it gets a “I don’t like to see ladies hurt that bad.” attitude from most viewers. Except for the hardcore MMA fans who respect the women’s division. And Mel Gibson and Chris Brown.

As for Cyborg: she’s got Brock Lesnar syndrome. People see big arms and assume that means one-punch KO power. But the truth is (and you’d think this theory would have died years ago) knock out power comes more from technique than muscles. And of course the Chute Boxe mindset is more “swarm” than “hit one haymaker”. I’m not saying she has no power, I certainly wouldn’t want to get punched in the face by her. But she does not know how to use core strength to really rattle someone’s brain enough to put them to sleep yet.

      • 45 Huddle says:

Women in general don’t have that power. It’s not the way they were made. The number of flush direct shots that are seen in female MMA would result in a landslide of KO’s if the same flurries happened in male MMA.

        • Alex Sean says:

Ahaha, whoa. Did that opinion come to you in a time machine from the 40s? To say that, as a whole, women cannot have KO power is preposterous. Anybody can have KO power if they utilize the proper technique and have the muscle to put behind it. But we’re talking about, generally, women that are 135-145 lbs. Look at those very same weight classes with men, how often do you really see full-on KOs?

        • smoogy says:

To test your theory, I would like to see video of you letting Ann Wolfe take a free shot on your chin. You owe it to science.

      • smoogy says:

Pretty sure that Kaitlin Young fight was stopped because her orbital bone was smashed.
