Brock Lesnar interview on ESPN with Josh Elliott (discussing Mir/Carwin)

By Zach Arnold | March 26, 2010

Print Friendly and PDF

– He was asked if he has fulled recovered from the diverticulitis. “Absolutely, I’m 100% recovered and that’s a good thing.” He said that it was a blessing because he needed to “reevaluate my life and reevaluate my training.”

– Asked about the UFC declaring Mir/Carwin for the Interim heavyweight title, Lesnar stated “That was a business decision the UFC had to make. … A make-believe belt to satisfy the company and satisfy the division. … I am the UFC Heavyweight champion.”

– Elliott displayed and read the quote Frank Mir said on Mark Madden’s radio show about wanting Lesnar to die in the Octagon. Lesnar’s response? “I know as a fighter, my first and foremost goal in the Octagon is to win.” He mentioned his “entertainment background but said, “Hey, I dislike Frank. … There isn’t an opponent that I’ve beat in the Octagon that I’ve truly liked. … When I get in the Octagon, I respect no one. That’s the bottom line for me.”

– When asked to comment on Mir stating that Shane Carwin is a better version of Brock, Mr. Lesnar said, “If Shane Carwin is a better version of Brock Lesnar, then the fight’s over in the first 30 seconds. … Let’s just see what happens Saturday night. I’m anxious to fight either one of those opponents. … I can sit back and watch and watch these guys fight over who wants to face UFC Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.”

    Leanar prints money….

Hahaha dam right he does 45 huddle

  3. The Gaijin says:

Mir will tool Carwin. There’s probably not a more over-rated guy (based on accomplishments) this side of Overeem.

Somehow Carwin has creeped up from 10-13ish to 6th ranked HHW, all while sitting around since his win over Gonzaga (by FAR his “best” win to date). People bitch about Fedor’s “gravitational pull on rankings”, I think the UFC hype machine and the fact that he’s fighting against Mir have done pretty much the same thing.

    • Alan Conceicao says:

Same thing happened with Arlovski post UFC too. I mean, at some point, you have to recognize that certain guys aren’t top 5-6 anymore. Noguiera looks beyond spent. Do we need to keep him above Carwin because Carwin hasn’t beaten him?

      • 45 Huddle says:

But Carwin’s biggest win is over Gonzaga. That doesn’t put you over top guys even if they are shot. Just like beating Paul Buentello doesn’t make you Top 10. Of course Struve and Kongo should be if Overeem is…. Lol. And Arlovski beating Nelson and Rothwell certainly didn’t make him even Top 5.

Shane Carwin is going to win. Mir can’t take a hard punch very well.

        • Alan Conceicao says:

I would gladly put Carwin over Noguiera or Couture in a second. Noguiera has lost several fights against guys ranked well below him, and Couture just hasn’t won anything of value period. I don’t even need to think about it.

  4. David M says:

Mir is going to kill Carwin. Carwin is the stiffest guy I’ve ever seen. Mir is going to KO him pretty easily.

  5. Mr.Roadblock says:

I’m really looking forward to Mir/Carwin. I think this is the most fun fight in the HW division in a long time. I also think it’s going to be over early one way or the other.

Mir has shown a lot of improvement in his standup. I think he’s going to look to unload early. He should have a speed and footwork advantage on Carwin. But can Carwin catch him with a big shot? Also does Mir have the power to drop Carwin.

I think Mir is going to be hesitant to hit the ground in this fight because his strength is off his back. If he finds himself underneath Carwin this could be a replay of UFC 100.

To me I think the key is going to be Mir overwhelming Carwin earlier. Really getting the jump right off the bat. He’s been in way more big fights and should be very focused tomorrow night. I think if Carwin can weather the first minute or two of an aggressive Mir then he will be in position to land one of his big paws.

I can see this one going either way. I’m rooting for Carwin because I’d like to see him vs Lesnar more. But I see this as a true pick ’em.

  6. marlowe says:

I hope Carwin wins this one. I am more interested to see Lesnar against someone new. Carwin could pose a lot of the same challenges for Mir that he had with Lesnar. Working off your back against a guy pushing 280lbs with good base is tough and knowledge of submission defense. His ground and pound has been pretty brutal on opponents too. Remember Carwin has had one year to improve since his last fight, and he is very good athlete.

  7. IceMuncher says:

This is a great fight. I don’t think there’s been any other MMA fight between two guys that have such a high potential to end the fight at any moment. Mir has only seen the 3rd round once in his entire career, and Carwin’s never seen the second half of the 1st round. The tension as they go at it will be crazy, I’ll be sitting at the edge of my seat the entire fight.

  8. Fluyid says:

Surely one of the first UFC mentions ever on a well-known Buddhism blog: http://www.shambhalasun.com/sunspace/?p=15726

    The Gaijin wrote:

    “Mir will tool Carwin.”

    WRONG! 🙂

    • The Gaijin says:

Yeah I gotta eat my humble pie on that one…Carwin has NASTY NASTY power.

All the ‘crank in the world can’t help Mir’s ability to eat too many shots b/c he’s too cool for school to defend.

      • Fluyid says:

You know I’m just playing around (I hope). I copied and pasted your quote with a smile on my face. No offense intended.

        🙂

        • The Gaijin says:

Oh yeah, none taken good sir.

You gotta hold those of us accountable when we make snooty, definitive statements like these. I’m glad Carwin proved me wrong – another proven talent at HW…this can’t be a bad thing!

Now we’ve got Lesnar, Carwin, JDS, Cain as bona fide elite HW fighters. Mir is at worst a gatekeeper to the very upper echelon and maybe, just maybe we’ll see Fedor finally come to his senses and realize that the UFC HW division is where it’s at.

  10. Fluyid says:

    David M says:

“Mir is going to kill Carwin. Carwin is the stiffest guy I’ve ever seen. Mir is going to KO him pretty easily.”

    WRONG! 🙂
