DREAM 12 (10/25 Osaka Castle Hall)

By Zach Arnold | October 23, 2009

Print Friendly and PDF

The all cage show using different rules.

Middleweights: Zelg Galesic vs. Kazushi Sakuraba
Middleweights: Katsuyori Shibata vs. Tokimitsu Ishizawa
Welterweights: Marius Zaromskis vs. Myeon Ho Bae
Featherweights: Keisuke Fujiwara vs. Motoya Miyashita
Middleweights: Paulo Filho vs. Yoon Dong-Sik
Featherweights: Yoshiro Maeda vs. Chase Beebe
Lightweights: Eddie Alvarez vs. Katsunori Kikuno
Lightweights: Kuniyoshi Hironaka vs. “Parky” Won Sik Park (CMA Korea)

The curious thing about the ad is that Kiyoshi Tamura, Andrews Nakahara, and Murilo Ninja were being advertised for the show.

Update (10/23): DREAM announced that Paulo Filho was off the Osaka fight card because he didn’t show up in Japan on Thursday. Not only has DREAM not been able to get a hold of Filho, neither has his manager.

  1. Brad Wharton says:

Yeah, Ninja dropped out last week to help his brother prep for the Machida fight..and lets face it, he’ll need all the help he can get.

I’m guessing that Tamura and Nakahara either didn’t want any part of the cage or they’re just being saved for NYE.

  2. cacti says:

Nakamura was pushed back to D.12 and he wont be fighting either. Sounds like U-File might have some beef with FEG/Dream.

I read somewhere that Nakahara was working on a new contract. Maybe he wasnt getting offered what he wanted?

  3. PizzaChef says:

What happened to Melvin Manhoef? He was suppose to face Galesic

  4. Dave says:

Manhoef is injured, and when Manhoef claims he is injured, he is injured.

  5. 45 Huddle says:

Alistair Overeem vs. James Thompson is also on this show. Yes, the same Thompson who got beat by Kimbo.

  6. Zack says:

“Alistair Overeem vs. James Thompson is also on this show. Yes, the same Thompson who got beat by Kimbo.”

Allistar is taking the approach that Cro Cop & Wand did in their primes, which is constantly staying active. As a fan, I like to see guys fight more often…opposed to seeing guys twice a year. The downside is many of the opponents leave a lot to be desired, such as Allistar’s opponent last weekend.

My guess is that the K-1 GP is his #1 priority right now. He’s trying to not take super dangerous matchups so he doesn’t get injured before that. If he wins the K-1 GP, that would be some crazy shit and there’s no one that wouldn’t want to see him against Fedor. And regardless of whether you think James Thompson is good or not, he’s still a big bastard who can give people trouble. I wouldn’t take another MMA fight before the GP if I was Allistar…but then again he’s a star, and I work in a cube, so he wins.

  7. liger05 says:

Kenda Ka Shin is back. Woo hoo. Shibata better beat him!!

  8. 45 Huddle says:

The staying active thing works for Overeem IF he is fighting good competition in between these squash matches. And he is not. He hasn’t fought anybody good in MMA for a while. Since Buentello actually, and wasn’t that 2007?

  9. Zack says:

He has fought really good K-1 guys. It seems like that’s his focus and he’s just doing MMA in between to stay active and get paid.

  10. liger05 says:

Is there anywhere I can find out what time in Japan this will be on live?

  11. Alan Conceicao says:

Oh jesus, more Filho drama. Hopefully he didn’t send a text message to Anderson Silva that he let his dogs out in the backyard and that the garage door was open or something.

  12. 45 Huddle says:

Filho is a mental midget. He makes War Machine seem normal by comparison.

Guys like Filho or even Nick Diaz make it extremely difficult for any promoter to get behind them.

  13. klown says:

I’ve come to expect this crap from Overeem, but what continues to shock me is his obscene Top 10 ranking among a majority of MMA opinion-makers. He doesn’t even belong in Top 20 and no one has been able to make any kind of case to convince me otherwise.

Even counting Buentello as legit competition is… charitable. I’d say his last win over a decent competitor was against Belfort at LHW. That was over 3 years ago.

VISA ISSUES KNOCK PAULO FILHO OFF DREAM 12 CARD

Once regarded as one of the top fighters in the world, Paulo Filho has had difficulty gaining any momentum since the shuttering of the World Extreme Cagefighting middleweight division that he once sat atop as champion.

He recently had to withdraw from a planned bout at Sunday’s Dream 12 event in Japan, where he was to face Yoon Dong Sik. Brazilian web site Tatame.com reported that Filho’s mother informed them that he was unable to make the trip to Japan due to issues with his visa.

Filho’s manager, Ed Soares, on Friday confirmed to MMAWeekly.com that there were complications with his visa, but did not provide details.

Following a well-publicized stint in a substance abuse rehabilitation clinic in Brazil, Filho (18-1) returned after a near yearlong layoff for what was expected to be a defense of his WEC middleweight title in November of 2008. He missed weight and the bout was reduced to a three-round non-title bout, which he lost via decision to Chael Sonnen.

The WEC then discontinued its middleweight division. Unlike other top fighters in the WEC’s 185-pound class, Filho’s contract was not picked up by the UFC.

He has since submitted Melvin Manhoef at Dream 10 in July, and then won a unanimous decision over Ultimate Fighter alumnus Alex Schoenauer in September.

He has been unable, however, to ascend back to the heights he attained in becoming the WEC champion.

Japan-MMA.com reports that Tarec Saffiedine is expected to take Filho’s place against Yoon Dong Sik.

  15. 45 Huddle says:

Visa Problems is a nice sounding excuse….. But for a guy who a laundry list full of issues, it is highly unlikely to be the real reason.

  16. Dave says:

I don’t know how I feel abut Kendo KaShin’s chances in this.

He has good submissions… In pro wrestling.. But you know, he isn’t very good at real fighting.

  17. Chuck says:

Wait….why was my post deleted? I said nothing that was bad in the least bit.

As I said before, This card has quite the match-making. Having a fight between between two just above average pro wrestlers who are below average fighters (Katsuyori Shibata vs. Tokimitsu Ishizawa, aka Kendo Kashin) is pure Japanese match-making. I expect Shibata to knock Ishizawa into next week, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Ishizawa pulls off an armbar or something. The man does have above average submission skills.

  18. Brad Wharton says:

    Visa issues…hmmm.

Its the oldest excuse in the book. If it was a logistical problem then no doubt it would have been discovered sooner then a day he was due to fly out.

I wish people would be more honest and say why they have issues getting a visa. Bisping for example has said on numerous occasions that he often struggles to get into the states because of past criminal convictions.

The whole ‘visa issues’ just adds an air of shadyness to it all. I guess that drugs (even recreational drugs that are more socially acceptable in other parts of the world) are frowned upon so much in Japan that admitting Filho had drug-related ‘issues’ (IF that is the case, we don’t know for sure) would be a major no-no.

  19. rainrider says:

Kikuno vs Alvarez should be the main event.

  20. PizzaChef says:

GODDAMN. WHY ARE THEY USING STRIKEFORCE STYLE FIGHT PACKAGES AND ENTRANCES!?

    Fucking StrikeForce.

I don’t get it WHY they have to change the format around. They better revert it back to the old format of VTR then entrances. This is bullshit.

  21. kobashi says:

So is the cage just a one off deal then? I prefer the ring when watching MMA so hope Dream reverts back to it.

  22. liger05 says:

The only word to describe Sakuraba is insane!!

  23. Alan Conceicao says:

With a DVR, this is a really fast show. That’s the best part.

Galesic/Sakuraba makes me sad because it virtually guarantees another 2-3 years of Sakuraba fights against guys that will beat him up really badly. Other than that, LOL @ Thompson giving Overeem his head and blatantly taking the out, thumbs up for Zaromskis continuing to lay down head kick justice, and the decision in the Dong fight was worse than the decision in the Machida/Rua fight.

  24. PizzaChef says:

Looks like I’ll backtrack a little. They went back to the traditional intro format from the Shibata/Ka Shin fight on to the other fights which made me much better. Especially for the Sakuraba fight.

Just HDNet was really retarded today with the commercials. They came back from commercials a little late so we missed part of the VTR. Hell for Thompson/Overeem they skipped it entirely even though you could see it in the background.

  25. kobashi says:

The Shibata/Ka Shin VTR was really well done I thought. Smart idea to show Ka Shin making Sakuraba tap.

Love the way they showed the NJPW logo before it switched to the Dream promo.

  26. spacedog says:

That Sakuraba fight…Wow. I was convinced we might see Saku actually die half way through it… but he pulls out the win. I must confess I’m glad he won, I’ve always had a soft spot for him.

I actually thought he net/hexagon was pretty cool.

  27. Alan Conceicao says:

Just HDNet was really retarded today with the commercials. They came back from commercials a little late so we missed part of the VTR. Hell for Thompson/Overeem they skipped it entirely even though you could see it in the background.

I like the video packages and all, but they don’t make an event or me. In the case of Thompson/Overeem, I loved that instead of a ridiculous hype video, they basically said, “this fight is a sham.” But I guess that might be bad for biz or something and so its bad for the sport.

  28. liger05 says:

I love Sakuraba’s single leg takedown. Awesome!!
